Do any girls do pull ups?

Quote  |  Reply

The other night we were at a friend's house and one of the guys had a bar attached to the doorway. I jumped up and did three full pull ups with relative ease. All my friends immediately said "GROSS! That is unnatural. Girls aren't supposed to be able to do that."

Do any females out there do pull ups?? I was proud of my strength, but now I'm starting to wonder if I'm becoming too manly.

Yep, a negative pullup means you start at the top and lower yourself down as slowly as you can.  It's tough!

Thanks guys! Haha I feel much more womanly after reading about all the women who can do pull ups!!! I'm definitely going to start incorporating them into my strength routine.

Those one arm pull ups sound ridiculously tough though. That'll be my goal!! Is to be able to do a one arm pull up!

Thanks :)

Ok, got it.  Thanks to you and fitnessgirll for the info.  I'm going to be adding those at some point to help me reach my goal.

i'm trying my damndest to do a pull up.  i use the assisted pull-up machine at the gym and i'm down to 88 pounds of assistance on my final set.

pull ups is are the one thing that make me scowl at the guys at the gym and curse their naturally superior upper body muscle mass.  fie on them, i say.  FIE!!!  *grumble*

This is true. I work with one too many dudes who can't complete one pull up. And they are in the military...  ::shakes head in shame::

Be proud, jcl!!

OMG - Keep going! I have found that very, very few people understand and appreciate how hard it is to do a palm-out pull-up.  Congrats and just silently laugh at your friends and your superiority!

I also say FIE!!! Although I fie the guys at the gym over their upper body strength for many other things too. It used to mostly be pushups though...kinda still a problem for me D:

You know what's funny? I stopped doing pushups for a while and started using weights for arm/shoulder workouts. And then after a couple months I tried pushups again and discovered I can do them. Also my trainer gave me a tip that works a lot. Concentrate more on using your shoulder muscles to push yourself up, not just your arms.

Time to bring back the Cooper's Test!

Isn't that just for running and VO2 max? Either way the AF needs stricter fitness guidelines, IMO. Not often, but there are times when our guys need to be fit to fight. Soldiers and Marines aren't the only ones who go on patrols.

No there are many types of Cooper's Tests actually and they can include anything. The old standard for the Canadian Forces used to be based on the USMC, I believe, and included the 1.5 Mile run, pulls-up, push-ups, sit-up, and bench press. The USAF one is about 50% waste size if I'm not mistaken then the rest is 1.5 run, push-ups, and sit ups.

LOL! Practically right. Total pts is 100. Waist=20, Push/sit ups= 10each, and the run=60. This happens in January. Also, if you fail one portion of the test, you fail the whole thing. I like that. Another great thing, now the test is monitored by "trainers". Which means no one can lie for you and say you did more than actually completed. Lots of people have been getting lower scores since that last change....

Sorry for being so off-topic OP!

when girls see other girls do pull ups in my conditioning class, they go "dang girl! i wish i could do that!"

or something along those lines ^^ haha :)

i think your friends just maybe didnt know that you could do that.  and it seems like guys like fit girls that can take care of themselves, not always clingy and stuff. well i mean if i was a guy lol and if i was a guy id also think itd be sexy if my girl could do that.  haha.

so i dont think its anything to be embarrassed about, only to be proud of!

p.s. becoming too manly would for a girl would be hard, unless you have a clear six pack and can bench 250+. basically a female version of arnold schwarzenegger
