Giving blood?
Does anyone have any info on the effects that donating blood might have on exercise performance? I know you cant exercise for one day after giving blood, but does it have any negative effect days later? One of the many reasons I am trying to get in shape is because I couldn't donate due to the fact that my resting heart rate was too high. I am now able to donate, and wont quit even if it does have a negative effect, but I am just curious. Thanks.
I have not done any research on this but I have never had any neg. effects and have given blood for quite some years.
I have given blood for several years now. Lately, the last 4 times, that I have given blood, I went right back to regular exercising the next day without any ill effects.
Just be sure to eat a good meal after your donation and you should be fine. I have given blood and then done a six-mile run the next day. I noticed that I had less energy and was more tired than usual, but nothing really serious.
I have one bad story that is still haunting me....
For my squadron PT if you have over a 90% for your score you are authorized to do Pt onyour own. Which of course is what everyone wants. Well my last PT test was taken the day after giving blood and it sucked. I only got 86% overall compared to my usual 97ish%. Never can max out my run, been injured since I joined.
So, it may have a slight effect, but nothing too serious to worry about.
i have no ill effects but as they say in the donation center: I have a red blood cell count of a healthy man. So I can give blood and go directly to the gym. No problems.
I've almost always been able to exercise a few hours after donating blood, but I wouldn't recommend doing so because there have been one or two times where I felt faint after doing so. If you eat well and drink plenty of fluids, it should be okay to exercise tomorrow.
