What do you think of glucosamine-chondroitin supplements?
Asked by anonymous on Sep 02, 2009 in Health Conditions

What is your professional opinion about glucosamine-chondroitin supplements for joint health?

Answer

Glucosamine, an amino sugar derived from shellfish shells, and chondriotin, a carbohydrate found in connective tissues, have been widely used for the treatment for osteoarthritis (OA).  Short-term studies show that the supplements reduce the pain of OA and improve joint mobility; however, they have not yet shown that the supplements rebuild cartilage.  More research is needed before glucosamine-chondroitin is accepted as an effective treatment for OA.  Still, they seem to work as well as NSAIDS (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications) and prescription meds - without the side-effects - and so I see no reason not to use them.  Read more about glucosamine-chondroitin supplements at About.com.
