gluten free on the road?

Quote  |  Reply

Hi, not sure if this is in the right thread, but I figured I'd give it a try.

I'm kinda new to the GF diet...been on it for about 5 days an have seen significant improvement. However, I'm moving out for another year at an out of state college tomorrow. The house is getting pretty low on food/it's all packed away and we're trying to keep it that way and we don't have a lot of time to prep much (i've made snacks). I was wondering if there were any fast food chains that were safe for our drive down? I think I'm just gluten sensitive...I've had moderate success with oats and things that have additives that may have gluten in them (mainly protein bars and salad dressings). I think it's just the grains that give me the main source of trouble.

Thanks!

I would google gf and fast food and I am thinking a list of dos and don't will come up. I am not that familiar with this but I know one has to be careful even around condiments etc. Good luck on your move. If I were you I would get a gluten beginner book and also see a nutritionist even at school possibly. Have you been tested or are you just thinking it is a possible

Hey my mom has been on a gluten free diet for many years so i am very familiar with this diet. When we are on the road and she is looking for fast food, Mcdonalds fries are safe because they are cooked by themselves so there is no cross contamination you can also ask for a burger without a bun. Wendys chili is GF as well. Hope that helped :)

Unfortunately, with most fast food chains, it seems your best bet is the salads, and even then you have to look out for the dressings.  Most chains will have information on their websites though, and I'd advise looking some up so you can go out being informed.  Some of the Mexican places (Taco Del Mar, Taco Bell) offer selections.

My wife has celiac disease, so I'm familiar with the fun in eating out.  Personally (and depending on how sensitive you are), I wouldn't trust your average fast food employee to keep your gluten free food from being cross contaminated.  They don't get paid enough to care.  So in general, we avoid the fast food places unless the kids demand it, which happens on occasion. :)
