Goal Reached!

Quote  |  Reply
Today I finally reached my goal weight! Wahoo! My body fat is currently 21.7, and I'd like to get that down to 20%. I've been dieting for over 2 years and have no idea how to adjust to maintenance! I still want to firm and tone, but I don't necessarily want to focus on weight loss. Where do I begin? I'm 21, F, 6'0", 160lbs. Any suggestions would be fantastic!

Ok, first off, congratulations!!! Two years of work paid off, eh?
Now, the first thing you have to do once off your diet is gradually increase the calories, obviously. I didn't gradually do it, I went from 1300 calories to 2000 right away and stayed the same weight. But play the safe side and do it slowly, preferably increase it by 200 calories a day every week until at your calculated maintenance calorie needs. If you're gaining or still losing once you are eating your maintenance level, adjust accordingly. Also, don't forget the exercise! It's important for keeping off weight for GOOD.
To firm and tone, you'll need strength training and cardio, alternating days. I don't suggest cardio and weight training on the same days, although some do and some don't. It's personal preference, I don't know if it really matters or not. Weight training builds, cardio tones.

Wow, this is really exciting..

I agree with the prior post. Gradually increase until you level off.
Keep good records,  keep doing what you have been doing, except with a few hundred more calories.

People mistakenly think that reaching the target weight is "the goal." Nope, the goal is to still be at your target weight years from now.  People who don't understand this usually regain the weight.

Studies show that people who successfuly maintain continue to step on the scale very frequently, at least once a week.

Basically, you know what you're supposed to do, if you do it, you'e totally got maintaining under control.
To clarify, you mean to increase calories by 200.........So  that if you are currently at 1500 and you have reached your weight goal, increase to 1700 a day for seven days and see how you do.  Then if you are still losing weight, instead of maintaining,  go to 1900 a day for seven days and weigh again, correct? Keep increasing by 200 calories per week until you are able to maintain your weight?

rachelrobin, that's correct. I did it by 100 per day, per week. As a result I lost slightly, because it took me a few weeks to get to maintenence level. At first I thought 1400, but over a month, found I was still losing very slightly, so increased to 1500... 1500 is slightly low for me still. So every day I'm under goal, I eat a couple hundred more calories... it is how I regulate.  I never ever go over the caloires that I decide I can eat for the day.
Let me add my congrats.  That is awesome.  By the way you look really good in your picture on your profile.  60 lbs is amazing.

For me I reached my goal about 2 1/2 months ago.  At first it was difficult to get up to my maintenance calories.  Some days I still don't get up there, but I try.  Maintenance is harder than losing.

The advice that others have given here in this thread is good.  It is what I did.  It takes work, but it is worth it.  Keep up the hard work getting your body in shape.
