Does your goal weight keep on changing?

Quote  |  Reply

I originally started off around 4 years ago (i never really went on a diet, that's why my weight loss is so slow) I wanted to be around 115. My short term goal weight still was around 120-130. For every 10 lbs I lost, I kept on thinking... just 10 more lbs. 10 more lbs.

Now I'm so close to the goal weight I originally wanted (only 2 lbs away) 4 years ago, my views are changing. I actually want to lose 10 more lbs. My friend told me that no matter how much you weigh, people will never be fully happy with their weight and I completely agree.  I think if I ever get to my current goal weight in 3-6 months or so, I might lower my goal weight even more.

Has anybody else experienced this?

You are both right.
I have lost over 87lbs this past year & I am 2lbs from the original goal I set for myself her e on this board back in August. But I have pushed the limit and find myself going for another 10lbs or another size drop. I wanted to officially stop my weight loss at Size 10 and no less-well now I am there, but 10lbs more than what I want to be (which goes to show I am carrying more muscle than fat weight-I was never this small before but weighed less).
So I am still going for the last 13lbs and if I go down to an 8-awesome. But thats where it stops for me. I want to be healthy too :)

Yeah, I thought I would be happy at size 4 or something but alot of people around me wear size 0-2 even when they weigh the same about as me (little bit taller) that just made me want to lose 10 extra lbs... :/

I did. I put on 13lb last year, so my goal was to lose it. As I got closer to the goal, I found myself thinking "hmm, another 5 would be nice". It was no longer to be healthy, it was more to be as skinny as my sister (who is probably underweight and much more petite than I am). I think it's a natural way for people to gradually get used to being healthier - as long as the goal weight never drops below what would be a healthy bmi. Once your current weight is in the healthy range, be more vigilant that you don't keep feeling dissatisfied with your body for no reason. Health is good, toning is good, but wanting to look like a barbie doll or spend all your time obsessing over what you're allowed to eat and no time on actually living your life, not so much.

It's normal to fine-tune your goals as you go along... but it's not a good idea to keep on lowering and lowering and lowering them. At some point you're going to have to say 'this is enough'. Weight loss isn't a competition - it doesn't matter if your sister or your best friend or the girl across the street wear a smaller dress-size than you - what matters is if you are healthy. So ask yourself honestly now, WHY do you feel the need to lose another ten pounds? And if the answer isn't something you really want to hear, maybe you don't need to lose the extra weight at all?

It's also because of how you want to perceive yourself. You might never look like whoever else you see in the magazines, your friends etc, its also just how you want to look. And also if you lost some weight you KNOW you can lose more just from the experience.. and you know every 10 lbs you lose you become more and more confident. And also honestly I just want to show off to people who said I should lose some weight. haha. It makes me feel really great when they get wide eyed and go like "that's you??" I also can fit into more clothing :D (loves shopping)

Yes, my original goal was 140, but now that I'm 142, I'm ready to lose another 10!  130 is my new goal.

Confidence and control over your health and appearance is good. Confidence based only on the fact that you are able to lose weight, not good. You're doing great, but just be careful. Even as a very healthy person with a good body image and plenty of other interests to keep me busy, when I focused too much on dieting I found I had these strange ED-type thoughts popping into my head. If I ate at a friend's house and couldn't calculate it I'd get panicky and wish I could throw it up, instead of just enjoying the company and maybe going to gym the next day. A lot of my friends who are Asian get self-conscious about their weight even when they're a healthy weight, because they have rounder faces than their white friends. But let me tell you, when we go out dancing they get WAY more attention from men than any of the white girls. As long as you're healthy, you're fine just the way you are.

Yeah my short term goal is 5 lbs. I'm 120, 5'2", 37, f. But I may be willing to go another 5 after that. I DO NOT want to get below 110 because it's too hard to maintain and then you are pissed off at yourself when you gain that back. And in my case I'd probably regain the other 5 too out of disgust or throwing in the towel. I'd rather ppl get used to seeing me this way, then for them to go "look she lost all that weight and has already gained it back."

I think we all lose weight for the wrong reason sometimes. Like you said because my friends are smaller, ...etc. I've been guilty too of losing weight for other ppl or other ppls approval. I just want to get to a comfortable weight now to where I still feel good about myself and at the same time be able to eat a normal diet with an average amount of activity w/o regaining.

3rd, (lol), I can't afford new clothes so if I lose too much I'm in another bind. I'm pretty happy with my progress so far. Most ppl don't consider me fat or skinny which is great, right in the middle. Lol.

Haha, so true.

at first, i wanted to weigh 130 lbs, and then it went to 125, then 120 and now i want it to be 115.. but i shouldnt.

I have been thinking about this a lot recently. My goal weight I set for myself was 140 lbs. I have a medium/large frame and at 5'6", I figured anything less would be unhealthy looking. (maybe I just think this because I have NEVER been that thin). I have 12 lbs to go until I reach that 140 mark, but I keep thinking 135 would be better.. maybe 130. I haven't changed my goals on CC or anything, its just a thought thats been creeping up. Once I lose these next 12, I will re-evaluate. Maybe focus on toning. Anyway.. your not alone. I think all weight losers have this mindset at some point.
