hkellick, it was a Gallup poll done in 1999.

The purpose of the debate is to encourage people to reflect upon their belief systems. And, perhaps some who are observing may be inclined to delve deeper into what they believe. Just because there WILL NOT be an conclusion to this question, and because people are firm in their beliefs, does not mean it is a waste of time. If just one person reflects upon his/her beliefs, then this is a success. Regardless of what that belief is.

But now, the argument shifts from God to the purpose of this debate.
I've followed a lot of this thread with the usual warriness.  I am an agnostic/spiritualist type living in the heart of bible land.  I find it offensive when my son comes home from a public school talking about Jesus and christianity which we do not follow.

While I respect anyones right to worship/believe in what they want, I wish the same respect and courtesy would be extended to those of us who don't.  It seems in my experience people believe that because the majority of said town or whatever is Christian that those of us who aren't should just suck it up and deal with it.

I believe profoundly in the separation of church and state.  I also believe people in general should spend more time focusing on our common humanity and building each other up.

I will believe in "one true god" and "one true religion" when I hear a church (or synagoge or temple or whatever) leader stand up and proclaim from on high that theirs is the wrong one lol

In other words to each their own.  No one should assume they have all the answers or know everything - it leads to narrow minds and closed hearts.

Peace to all of you no matter who/what you do or don't believe in :)
Please do not think that all christians are intolerant.  I wish more people would actually read the bible and try to understand its true meaning.  Jesus was never intolerant of anyone or condemned anyone.  He loved everyone and all that he asked was for us to love each other.  I don't believe arresting, ridiculing, beating or being mean to people just because they do not believe in Jesus or God.  The people who call themselves "Christians" and do these hateful things are not true Christians and have missed the true message.
HK:

The 95% number came from this section in the article M3l linked to:

?Overall, the center's survey of surveys confirms that America truly is one nation, under God?or at least Americans say it is. In survey after survey, overwhelming majorities say they believe in God. More than nine in 10 Americans?95 percent?told ABC News polltakers that they believe in God.?

Even if it were a scientific poll with an adequate sample size and accounted for population variance, the only thing it proves is that the majority of Americans have a belief in a god- this is not exactly a surprise.
