I eat breakfast just as soon as I get up, because eating food turns our metabolisms from low gear (sleep mode) to high gear (calorie-burning mode) ... and I want that to occur as soon as possible upon awaking (I need all the calorie-burning metabolism boosts I can get!) And I now make sure that I eat at least one spicy thing with breakfast because that further boosts your metabolism! (For me, it's roasted red pepper hummus with some extra spices ... and sometimes I will have a double-mug of low sodium chicken bouillon with chili sauce!)

After I've eaten, I get showered and dressed, get the computer turned on, get the pets fed, straighten up the family room and kitchen, etc ... and then I usually settle down to check emails and the forums.

I also eat a small snack right before bed ... radishes if nothing else, because digesting them will keep my metabolism active for an hour or two even after I've gone to sleep ... burning more calories.

I'm curious R.G. if your loosing 2lbs a week?  And if so your saying you get that done by exercising 300 calories away each day?
If your getting huge results like that I'm happy for you!   I would think I was in heaven if I could lose 2 pounds every week.
I would be thrilled to see that each month!!!

Hi Forks -- it was 2# THIS WEEK, the last two weeks were a total of 1.5.  So it's kind of my anal-retentive complex approach that has been changing, as I seek to find the "right" combos. I have been on my higher-protein, higher fiber diet quest, and added in enough calories each day to get my deficit below 1,000. I think that was the kicker for me, this week. It was 927 per day, average.  My exercise "burn" average is 400 over maintenance (harder to calculate clearly, when you factor in regular burn plus exercise), and I subtract the 162 calories of exercise I "need" each day just not to gain from my averages. And my calories cycle anywhere from 1750 to 2050 based on my exercise for that day. So if my math is right, I had a total deficit of about 8000 calories this week, and a loss of 2 pounds. But the KEY seems to be that average daily deficit of less than 1,000 but more than 750 calories, some from diet, and some from exercise. I think it would probably be different for each person, and also change as more weight is lost, or more exercise added to life. (2BB, feel free to check my work, LOL)

(I don't know if you want to get into this much, I'm an analytical person and this type of research is fun to me.)

And remember, I mix up my workouts with hard days and easy days. Hard days are 2+ hours of exercise (bike riding outside, or spinning, or jogging, or hiking with hands weights) w/ heart rate of 65 - 75% of max. Easy days are about 1 hour, with weight, flexibility and strength training and "interval" heart rates (get it high for a few minutes, then recover. Lather, rinse, repeat.) I also rest and don't exercise AT ALL at least one day a week. I don't know if this would have the same results if you burn 300 every day, but I would bet your body gets used to it (and therefore you would lose more slowly.)

Have you thought about working with a trainer? (If budget and time permit). I bet if you added two days a week of weight lifting, with some light aerobic intervals, you would get the 2# holy grail. It seems to be the only thing you're not doing. (not being critical, just making an observation.)

I am a "second breakfast" hobbit grrrl, too. I get up about 6:30, have some hot tea w/ sugar free creamer, and half a piece of toast with hummus or turkey. Then I work for awhile and have a bowl of oatmeal or cereal around 8:30, with more tea and a 1/2 cup of orange juice or 1/2 a grapefruit. Lunch at 11:30, snack at 3:30 or 4:00, workout 5:30, then light supper about 7:00. I generally am not an evening snacker but sometimes will have a 60-cal light yogurt, kamut puffs and soy milk, an apple, or 100-cal popcorn plus some tea if I'm feeling "munchy" before 10 pm. I never eat after 10 pm so often go to sleep dreaming of the good breakfast I'll have in the morning (seriously, who dreams of oatmeal?!)

Hi all,

Just wanted to check in. Not counting calories----so I have no nutrition to report. I do feel better right now--I have 10 days of medication to get through me though--so then I will tell you how I feel! I'm still exercising (doc said it was 'ok') . I usually wake up take a shower, get ready for the day and then I eat around an hour after I am up. So I get up at around 6am and then eat breakfast at 7am. Then I'm usually hungry (stomach growls) at around 10 am so I have to have a mid-morning snack.  Ok, I am going to spinning class tonight (no excuses) , so I will let you all know how it goes: Today

Exercise: Strength training with personal trainer, 60 minutes spin class

=^..^= MOLLY (wandering off to nibble on zucchini)

* waves to tam_ee! *

Glad you came! I've just got back from playing with my new heart rate monitor, so I didn't see ya' earlier. Going by your Journal thoughts, you'll love this Gang and their thinking. I'm a SLOW loser, so a long-term support group of like-minded folks is very important to my long-term success... WinkLaughing

Forks, (danceswithforks), kindly began this BEFORE the holidays and helped us through them, lol! She understands weight loss struggles really well, and has a good level-headed approach you'll enjoy...

* looks for bribe promised by forks... * (Just joking, lol!)

(tam_ee was nice enough to add me as a buddy today, and her Journal sounded so much like us, and the esteemed Boss, that I invited her to join the Gang-- I knew you guys would welcome her, too!)

IF you have enough time, tam_ee... read back through the thread and you'll see why I thought you'd like it here. We think like you, I think, lol! Hope that's not scary!!! SurprisedLaughing

Welcome! Laughing My theme song is, "We are the Champions...!"  Laughing

And my theme for our Going for Gold Year is, "Going to be Great in 2008!!!" Laughing

I don't know for sure if the Gang has adopted those, but anyone may who wants to-- They reflect my goals for the year, so I use 'em a lot, lol! Wink

Hey- Gang!!!

I took a 'Fitness Test' with my Polar Monitor... Expected a low grade...!!!

Of 7 possible levels, I placed at the top of the 5th!!!!! Good with 34, with Very Good and Elite above to conquer??? I've probably come from the 1st level of less than 21 to reach that 5th level- and 36 will take me to the 6th!!! The 7th, Elite, is simply above 38... I can only wonder where I was 8 months ago...!!! Surprised

Back to yodeling... Great Day for Yodeling!!!!! LaughingLaughingLaughing

* wonders...just WONDERS... did anybody else yodel with me...??? Lol!!! * Wink

Fun food fact of the day -- turkey burgers are most delicious when they're grilled outside in 10 degree weather! We mixed the ground meat with sodium-free dry veggie soup mix from the organic section of the grocery store. Oven fries and a giant salad rounded out the meal. *Sigh,* I love supper, don't you? And I still have calories to have my tea and granny smith apple.
