LURKING...!!! Surprised

Really busy... exercising with Hrm... Working AWESOME!!!! Laughing

Will report in later... WinkLaughing

DancesI bought the Danskin resistance tubes set at Walmart and the workout CD that came with it focuses a whole lot on arms. I can't say whether it is working on reducing mine yet or not, but she does give them a workout.

I just got done doing those tubes at around 9:45. I feel better now that I know I got some calories burned. I can't eat like I did tonight again for a long time because I am now stressed about getting on the scale. I joined a St. Patrick's Day Challenge and they weigh in on Mondays. What a horrible day to weigh in!! So if you go out on the weekend it shows on Monday...oh well.

Going to bed now...nite nite!

Dances ... you may want to try soy milk if dairy and almonds cause you problems. There's even rice milk out there.

=^..^= MOLLY

I have a question if anyone knows an answer. I have been drinking soy protein shakes for quite a while and also for probably about the same amount of time my weight loss has slowed down drastically. My mothers diabetic doctor said something about soy and thyroid effects. I got looking into it just now and I read that it could actually cause hypothyroidism. I guess what I need to do is quit drinking soy protein and if that doesn't help maybe go to a doctor. I really hope that I haven't messed up my thyroid by drinking something that I thought was good for me. Anyone have any thoughts on this or suggestions? Just want to lose more than half a pound a week, I was losing 2 lbs a week then it really dropped back fast.
Morning friends, finishing brekkie, then off for some exercise. It's daze like this that let you know you're alive. (2 degrees, -14 wind chill.) Extra fleece, pleez!

Forks, do you have 2.5 lb hand weights? Start taking them on your walks. You'll see your arms start to shape up in two weeks, promise.

Other good arm work: pushups -- against the wall (15 reps x 3 sets), modified on the floor, put your knees down (10 reps x 3 sets, build to 20-25-30 reps).

Triceps -- stand with your feet hip distance apart, hold your hand weight above your head with your hands pointed toward the back. Bend your elbows with your hands together. (10 reps x 3 sets).
The stretchy bands are great too. I'll research some websites for suggestions and post later.
PS -- 4SQ; There is conflicting info on the benefits vs. counterindications of soy. Much of the research is spotty, and done with small sampling sizes. In my review of the literature, eating soy has more benefits since it is higher protein, and lower calories, and has healthier long-term effects than animal protein. In cultures such as Japan where one of their main food sources is soy, there is far less incidence of heart disease, heart attack, and obesity.

I would say all you can do is go off the shakes, substitue other calories, and see if you have a difference in weight loss. I would be surprised if you "created" a hypothyroid condition in only two months. Get your tests done medically so you know your status for sure, then go from there. You may also need more calories given your increase in exercise. I only added 75-100 average per day increase and saw an increased weight loss of 1.5 pounds.

Morning all!!

4sq- I have to agree with RG.  Unless you already had a thyroid disorder and the soy aggravated it (you should get it checked either way) you probably need to eat more.  I started losing less a couple of months ago and then bumped my calories by about 100 per day.  I eat 1350 +/- a few each day with one day each week eating about 1500, usually either the day or day after I did a lot of exercising/ hard work.  I'm back to about 2-3 lbs per week again.   I went to several sites to figure my BMR and found that this sites was quite low so I raised mine and that did the trick.  Google BMR and check around to see what a good average is for you.

Forks- So sorry about the almonds!  If you have an allergy to them it does build up in your system.  This time your throat was scratchy and you were coughing, next time your throat could close and constrict your breathing all together.  I have a friend that has 3 children all anaphalactically allergic to a ton of things and it definitely makes a difference in how much exposure you have to an allergen.  You should completely ban dairy and nuts until you get a allergy skin test to confirm your suspicion and keep a bottle of Benadryl in your home in case you are alone and accidentally eat something with almonds.

Molly- Still jumping up and down and happy for you!  I told my mom about you (she is working on losing weight too) and how informative you are and what a GREAT veggie eater you are.  My mom is the pickiest eater you will EVER meet... that's why I have never tried any veggies, she never cooked them when I was young... I'm a veggie newbie!

Off to eat breakfast now... I've been awake for 45 minutes and haven't eaten.... AAAAAHHHHHHHHHhhhhhh.  There's a rumbly in my tumbly.  I forgot what that feels like, LOL.

danceswithforks what kind of cereal do you usually eat with the high fiber and protein and all? that sounds real good.

OMG if soy causes thyroid problems I'd have a real slow metabolism. I drink soy milk like everyday. I hate regular milk and soy yogurt actually tastes good too like Whole Soy Co.

tamleech can you explain the whole BMR and increasing calories to loose weight? Like how does that work?

Today is the day I'm seriously taking the steps to loose weight; I have to be serious. When I ran today i felt so fat and full and the day before all I did was sit on my butt on the computer. Right now I'm sitting on my butt =P but I just want to stop being a hypocrite to myself.

Goal: To loose 20 pounds

Where is this going to be done?: At home.

What's expected to be done?: Cut out the junk food and desserts; stick to meals rather than trying to snack the whole day thinking that you're eating snacks in between meals which doesn't work for me at all -.-. Basically save treats until the end of the day.

When is this going to be started?: 1/20/08

Who is this for?: Well I hope it's for me because I want to be able to show off myself a little and feel proud. I want to make my parents proud so they know I conquered something hard.

Why do you want to do this?:  To  have a defined jaw line, so I don't have to feel the bit of fat on my neck and stomach. Also to be a better runner so I could run more smoothly. To be able to wear nice clothes. To be accepted in school and for people to like me.

Hi there! I have been lurking around, and too busy to post for awhile, so sorry about that... but hi everyone! I am just trying to recover from post race soreness (well actually I am all better) and getting back into regular exercise...

I had two goal weights in my weight loss plan and met one of them (albeit briefly) yesterday! I am today a lb above that, but I was ECSTATIC yesterday! Wooweee all the running is paying off!

Hope you are all well, and sorry I am too busy to write more than this... but I check in regularly! Always lurking teehee ;)

There are lots of articles and studies out there suggesting that too much soy in one's diet can impact hormones, thyroid, metabolism and other issues. So, while I will eat some soy products once in a while, I don't rely on soy as a main source of protein.

=^..^= MOLLY

First of all thank you to everyone who gave me input on the soy issue. I am switching over to whey protein shakes with strawberries to make them taste yummy. Also after going to other sites and checking out the BMR info I am going to increase my calories for a bit and see if that helps. I am still kinda confused like hananabanana but I will at least try it for one solid week and see if it works, if it does great.

Just a tidbit of extra info, we bought a Vitamix a couple of years ago and boy it sure does make the best protein shakes. My mom uses a regular blender and ends up with chunks of ice cubes still there. Our Vitamix pulverizes them in seconds and my shakes are very much like a milk shake. That machine is now the most used object in our kitchen. With a small frying pan coming in as a close second.

Hi all,

Just been busy today. Visited 3 grocery stores looking for low-carb items, no luck, guess the low-carb craze ended a few years ago? Not sure. My trainer is putting me on 90 to 100 carbs a day--and I love my carbs so I'm looking for substitutions. I think I'm going to buy some products off the internet. Not much going on today. Today is my rest day from exercise and life. I plan on getting a nap in (I love sleep) not much else besides that---I have to read for school of course but nothing I can't handle. I'm glad tomorrow is a holiday! Alright, everyone is doing great--great stuff going on in here.. I'll write more later

Ok, so I'm on the hunt for low-carb items but I have become stumped on something and I need some help. There is this new pasta out called Dreamfields Pasta and the box says it has a total of 42 carbs but there are only 5g of carbs that are digestible out of this package so there for they are claiming that this pasta has 5  grams of carbs but if it has 5 grams why on the box does it say 42 grams? The box is claiming there is 37 controlled carbs and then 5 digestible carbs--- I've never heard of this --if someone has and can enlighten me that would be great!

boots, that sounds like the "bait and switch" game to me; so they can claim "Low Carb" on the package. The only way pasta is low carb is if you eat a very small serving. Try some of the tofu shirataki noodles if you want lower carb, and lower calories. I don't like their texture too much, but you get a huge serving for the calories. Sometimes I get spaghetti squash, bake it up, and use it like pasta. (with sauce, cheese, turkey meatballs, the works.)

PS BIG NEWS -- tomorrow we're writing a contract to make an offer on a new house. Just around the corner from where I live now, go figure! I had driven past it everyday and never given it a second thought. SO loved it, me too, we can make it work for us, the critters, and my office. Thanks for any white light and prayers sent, the next month is going to be crazy busy.

Thanks RG! I will pray for you--a house--such a big deal! I figured that much about the pasta--I will try the noodles though!

Not feeling too well tonight--I got a lot of meds down me right now---I'm feeling a little nausea--I think I took too much cough syrup! I didn't mean to but I was just having a huge huge coughing fit and now I'm not coughing at all. lol .. I can't wait until this sickness passes

I wasn't very hungry: I'm fixing to eat 2 cups of cheerios so that I can get my calories over 900--just not hungry but I know I need to eat and I know I especially need to eat since I'm taking medicine. Have a good night everyone

A diabetic friend of mine tried it and her blood sugar spiked sky-high. (So much for all those "undigestable" carbs, huh?)  When looking at total carbs, you ARE allowed to delete fiber and sugar ALCOHOLS ... but that's it.... otherwise, a carb is a carb is a carb (though some are lower glycemic carbs.) About.com's expert on low-carb diets says be CAREFUL with Dreamfield's Pasta because a number of diabetics have reported blood sugar spikes (which means it really isn't low carb!) http://lowcarbdiets.about.com/od/cooking/a/pa stasubs.htm  Besides, if the calories didn't count, they really wouldn't have to list them, would they?

You want a no-carb pasta? Shirakati Noodles. http://www.miraclenoodle.com/

You want a low-carb pasta? Tofu-Shirataki Noodles. http://www.house-foods.com/tofushirataki_faq. html

If you want to try soybean pasta ... http://www25.netrition.com/nk_soybean_pasta_p age.html''

And you may also look for Atkins pasta (you can probably buy it online!)

Thanks Molly!

Okay, so I've now taken the 3 days I allowed for myself in January where I don't get everything I ate logged in to my calorie log. So I will have a daily report for the rest of the month!

Well this week I go to 9min jog and 1 min walking on the treadmill. 3 times to make 30 minutes. Oh, I wish I had a real treadmill, because than I don't think I'd even need to stop. But with this manual one, you constantly feel like you're going at an incline and you have to hold on to the bars otherwise, you'll fall off. gggrrrrr Anyone getting rid of a treadmill, send it to me! :D
