I guess it depends on what you're into... Anna Maxted has two out that are wonderful..... Getting Over It and Running in Heels.  Funny, but down to earth.

There is always the latest Potter book.... I was NEVER into Harry Potter, but once I picked up one, I now have read them all.  They are like candy to me...

The Birth of Venus - Sarah Dunant.....very good, set in Rome.

The Time Travelers Wife............. one of the best ones I 've read in awhile

Notes on a Scandal - listened to that on tape............ excellent.  Didn't see the movie, but saw a clip for the movie.... nothing at all like the book.

What have you read lately?  I am looking for something to take in October --- long 8 hour flight.
Wish I could help.

As mom to little boys, I could recommend a mean Curious George, Don't Let The Pigeon Drive the Bus, The Wheels on the Bus, or even a few good Magic Treehouse books, but adult books? hmmmm, thats a toughy, I am in the middle of How to Talk so Your Kids will Listen and Engaging Autism.

Think of it this way, my post will get your query a free "bump" ! ;)

Have a good and safe flight
My Sisters Keeper. Forget the author. But its sucha good read. Me and my sister loved it. Very good!! I'm into anything; so long as its good
I second The Time Traveller's Wife, by Audrey Niffenegger
Or:
A Prayer for Owen Meany, by John Irving
The Corrections, by Jonathan Franzen
A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius, by Dave Eggers
The Secret History, by Donna Tartt
I Know This Much is True, by Wally Lamb

Those are all good, intense reads.  Light, Fluffy Wonderful books:

The Silent Gondolier, by William Goldman
The Pleasure of My Company, by Steve Martin (yes, that steve Martin)

My most recent readable reads (highly recommended):

Plain Truth by Jodi Picoult

A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini (author of Kite Runner)
I have picked up my sisters keeper three times at the library and put it back... don't know why... I will grab it now and give it a real look.
My Sister's Keeper is also by Jodi Picoult (I recommended another of her books above called Plain Truth). I read it for my book club a few years back (maybe 1.5 years ago).
Some great suggestions above, Wally Lamb's books are fabulous and so readable, all 900 pages :) Also, Dave Eggers AHWOSG is hilarious. Loved Birth of Venus too.

Here is another page-turner: The Other Boleyn Girl by Phillippa Gregory

Good call, Kellywood; I also really enjoyed both "A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius" and "A Prayer for Owen Meany". Steve Martin is an author who's impressed me with his writing - it's thoughtful and quirky, kinda like him. Both "Please of My Company" and "Shopgirl" are quite good.

Also try:

The Blood of Flowers by Anita Amirrezvani (The story of a young girl in 17th century Persia who ends up as a sort of concubine to a wealthy businessman. Rich and descriptive narrative.)

Any book by Michael Chabon (I just finished "The Mysteries of Pittsburgh," but any of his work is good.)

Special Topics in Calamity Physics by Marisha Pessl (A teenage girl tells the story of the amazing and awful experience of her last year of high school. This girl definitely enjoyed a strange existence.)

The House of Leaves by Mark Danielewski (This book is huge and I finished it in 2 days; I couldn't stop reading it. At some point the text on the page is printed to match the action in the story and my heart was actually racing following what was going on, twisting the book this way and that to keep going.)

My current book is "Red Earth and Pouring Rain," by Vikran Chandra. Not finished with it yet, but it's good :)

Give literature a try, also. People think Kafka is "heavy" reading, but I find his work to be quite funny.
Oh man I'm in the middle of reading Truman Capote's In Cold Blood.

I also have read and loved - The Kite Runner, Watership Down, Valley of the Dolls, A Primate's Memoir, To Kill a Mockingbird and one of the best books i've read in a LONG time

The Devil and the White City
I am in the middle of rereading George Orwell's 1984. Great book (and still creepy). Suggest it to everyone. It's a classic ;D
hey i also loved my sisters keeper. i read it a while ago but it was really good. I suggest Laurell K hamilton if u like fantacy..like vampires and such. she has the meridith genrtry series ( iv read all beside the new coming out) and the anita Blake , vampire series. im working on that series but there is like 20 books total. shes a really good
Here is another absolutely fabulous one Snow Flower and the Secret Fan - it's about a relationship between two women in the background is chinese foot binding. It's magical.

1984 sounds interesting, haven't thought about that book in a long time. Maybe I will suggest it for my next Book Club!
I am Legend by robert matheson is awesome so far. its a vampire novel. nothing like dracula or anything written by anne rice.
lol ~ just watching curious george now.  it is rather enjoyable, but not intense whatsoever ;)
The Grapes of Wrath is my favorite book ever ... I think it is beautifully written and an engrossing story.
For "intense" I like  books by these authors:

Robin Cook

Patricia Cornwell

Jeffrey Deaver
I agree with calisue, but will also add:

James Patterson

Janet Evanovich

Iris Johanssen

J.D. Robb

Stephen King

Ann Rule
May I suggest some Gregg Loomis? Very similar to how Dan Brown writes, but a bit less preachy, if you ask me. My other favourite authors are Julie Garwood (She writes both Romance and Suspence, and does both beautifully) and Terry Goodkind (who writes a fantasy series about magic and wizards and stuff that I can read over and over again and love them every time)
I'm just starting Stiff , mary roach, The courious lives of Human cadavers. A teacher I work with just finished it and said it was really good.  Suppost to be the funniest and unusual book of the year.  (sound like it huh?)
