Is there any good bran cereal with lots of insoluble fiber minus HFCS?
Practically all Kellog's cereals have high fructose corn syrup in it, so I can't have some of the most fiber rich bran cereals... but the others seem to fall so far behind on fiber content! Any help here? I don't really have time to make stuff for breakfast, so getting oatmeal is out of the question.. it'll be weird eating oatmeal in class!
Thanks tons in advance!!
It doesn't take any more time to make oatmeal than anything else. That's what I eat when I"m up early in the morning. Nothing beats oatmeal with wheatgerm.
A lot of people here swear by Fiber One. The original says it has aspartame in it. Some of the other ones did list HFCS.
I looked on the Post website and they have "Wheat n Bran" with no other ingredients. Kinda weird. General Mills had a MultiGrain or MultiBran Chex.
But I still stick by my oatmeal. In a pinch, you could eat a high fiber bread/sandwich for breakfast.
I eat Fiber One, it doesn't have HFCS and it's low in calories. ![]()
i just bought optimum slim today. it's organic so i doubt it would have high fructose corn syrup and it has 11g of fiber per serving, and a serving is 55g - very filling.
Thanks! I hope those are what I'm looking for... I have a thing against any kind of fake sweeteners... they reduce metabolism!
Here are two others for you: The Original Spoon Size Shredded Wheat has 170 cals. in a 1 cup (49g) serving, and 6g of fiber, 5 of which are insoluble fiber. The ingredients list is brief: whole grain wheat. (And BHT added to pkging to preserve flavor). That's it! (And it has 6g protein, too!)
Also, Kashi GO LEAN Crunch! cereal has 190 cals. per 1 cup (53g) serving, and brings in 8g of fiber, 5 of which are the insoluble type. It's sweetened with stuff like honey & cane juice syrup, etc., but no HFCS. It contains 7 whole grains & sesame and....BONUS! Each serving yields 9g of protein! YES!
Enjoy your breakfast! ![]()
none of the Nature Path cereals have HFCS. If you google nature path you can look up the ingredients of each of their cereals, and see the fiber content. The Organic Smart Bran states it contains 13g of fiber in a serving. I have not tried this one yet, but I think I will go grab a box!!
Not bran but good high fiber... uncle sams cereal... it has like 13 grams per serving mostly from flax seed so its a little high in calories but still great for you
Fiber One is basically the same as All-Bran, but instead of HFCS it has aspartame. Personally, as much as I dislike HFCS, I prefer it to the nasty chemical aspartame.
Fortunately, All-Bran doesn't have a LOT of HFCS - it's really not especially sweet compared to Raisin Bran, etc. I enjoy it every am.
What about plain 'ol puffed brown rice? I get it for a dollar a bag, then mix it with Fiber One...
Steel Cut Oats are great. They are satisfying. I make a batch (4 -1 cup servings) with milk instead of water, dried fruit, and sprinkle in a few chopped nuts. I portion them out and then chill them to eat throughout the week. I sometimes add a drizzle of honey. Hope this helps :)
just stop making excuses; wake up 30 minutes earlier and make something for breakfast... it's not that difficult.
but for cereals; it's too bad that HFCS is not negotiable. I'd at least call the Mfr to find out the actual % added to a cereal before making a decision. That's b/c of commonly available cereals Kellogs All Bran Buds are ridiculously high in insoluble fiber (and pretty low soluble- bacteria feeding and laxative like!) at 30g/c, +9g/c soluble; next would be Regular All Bran at 20g/c and 2g/c soluble (with much less sugars added too);
and then regular old Post Raisin Bran with 8g/c and 1g/c soluble (which has no HFCS, just CS)...

I have Smart Bran every day. I love it, tastes like an upgraded version of Fiber One. Excellent source of fiber AND tasty/crunchy! I have also used it in various recipes (they provide recipes for muffins & other dishes printed on the inside of their boxes)
