Good breakfast
About 3 months ago I started eating breakfast everyday, since everyone says it's good for you. I realized I have gone through phases of what I eat: toast and peanut butter, fiber one cereal with silk, morning star mini corn dogs, and slim fast. I cycle through this every coupd of weeks. I have grown bored and I am looking for a low cal breakfast that will fill me up for a few hours. As a side note I hate oatmeal.
What do you eat for breakfast?
eggs are proven to keep people full longer than any food. i like 2 whole eggs, and 2 egg whites fried with crushed red pepper and a little parmesean cheese on top, it gets me through three classes, which is about 4 hours, without getting too hungry before lunch.
I like to make dannon light and fit based smoothies and mix in 1/2 cup fiber one!
You know, I've pretty much been sticking to cereal (hot and cold) for breakfast. But this post has inspired me. Think once my cereals are gone I'm going to start making scrambles.
Oh! A scramble (egg white beaters with mushrooms, red peppers, and onions) with turkey bacon (35 cal slice) in a Food For Life Pita (100 cal). That sounds so good.
Toast lends itself to all kinds of toppings.... scrambled eggs, grilled mushrooms, grilled bacon, cottage cheese, peanut butter. And you can use other breads to get more interesting toast.... muffins, crumpets, granary, seed bread... Then there are fruit combinations... compotes, smoothies. There are more cereals than fibre one.... muesli, branflakes, All-Bran, granola... and you can top them with different fruits to add variety. Eggs are versatile... poached, omelettes, scrambled, french toast, boiled. If you don't like oatmeal you could make a savoury porridge out of quinoa. If you want something more 'european continental' you can go with cooked meats, sliced cheeses, smoked fish and crusty bread with preserves. The japanese have rice and miso soup.
Have fun....
Every morning, I have 1/4 cup of egg whites with cheese on light 100% whole wheat toast. Lately, I've been using either fat free cheddar or mozz with spinach, broccoli, and fresh basil. It ends up being about 110-120 cal, depending on what I put in. Then, when I get to work, I have a bowl of lower sugar Quaker instant oatmeal (120 cal). I try to eat every 2 hours, so this split breakfast works well for me.
I'm not a huge fan of oatmeal, but I love quinoa with milk, a bit of brown sugar and blueberries.... or grape nuts with a few raisins and 1/2 an apple chunked up in them.
I usually make a "scramble" - 1 egg, small bit of sausage, spinach (or peppers sometimes cabbage!), small bit of cheddar or jack. AND I zap a small red potato and before I do the scramble, I crisp up the potato (chopped) and some onion in a bit of olive oil. This is on the higher side of cals for breakfast and maybe too time consuming for some (I work from a home office so no commute) but holds me for 2-3 hours and is all good nutrition.
There is no law that says you have to have "breakfast" food for breakfast either... :) !
I love egg white scrambles with a side of fruit. Here are some of my favorites:
1. EW w/spinach, tomatoes, Reduced Fat feta cheese & fresh basil
2. EW w/zucchini, onion and topped with salsa
3. EW w/diced chicken, basil and FF grated Parmesan cheese
I also love just plain egg whites scrambled with a side of morningstar farms sausage patties and fruit. I make sure I have a side of fruit with my breakfast every morning. My breakfasts keep me full for at least 3 hours. The protein in the Egg whites really help a ton!
Microwave egg sandwich - really easy and fast.
I take a whole egg and an egg white and put in a cereal size bowl... mix it up enough to break the one yolk, but not totally scramble.
Throw in the microwave for a minute and a half (depending on your microwave).
Put it on wheat toast with a slice of cheese of your choice.
Takes about 3 minutes total!
I just made a breakfast burrito using 1/2 cup egg substitute, 1/2 serving sliced deli ham (chopped), and some onions. I wrapped it in an 8" flour tortilla, topped it with salsa and green tabasco. Yum. Only took about 5 minutes. It has enough about 250 calories and I won't need a between breakfast/lunch snack. I usually put on 1 piece of FF cheese, but was out this morning. Still, less than 300 calories. Something different for me, as I eat oatmeal 5 out of 7 days a week. I've got an A- going so far and that includes my cup of milk. I'm sure using a reduced fat tortilla would have reduced the calories and improved the grade, but by the end of the day I usually get an A overall. I started off getting B's, then made the healthier choices and upped my grade to an A about 95% of the time. I wonder what it takes to get an A+.
Once a week I do my scrambled eggs, I cook them one at a time. Put parchment paper between them and freeze individually.
Then each morning I want an egg sandwich I pop 1 in the microwave for 1.3 while I toast 1/2 a multigrain english muffin. Once hot I top it with FF Cheese and a little salsa or Ham
I do it this way so I only have to microwave in the morning and no kitchen cleaning ![]()
Banana sandwich is my current favourite. Other than that I usually have cereal such as Weetabix with some fresh or dried fruit.
Smoothies are also a good idea, blend some banana and milk for a quick easy idea, although remember to eat enough cals!

Millet is also good prepared this way!
For breakfast, I usually have 1/2 cup plain yogurt with honey and a mix of granola, nuts & seeds or cottage cheese or eggs or 1/2 cup egg whites, combined with either bran cereal (+ soy milk), toast, oatmeal or a homemade muffin.
I am the same way....I do that for every meal in general, cycle through a few diff things....
I had a huge addiction to McD's breakfast....so I started making my own versions:
- whole wheat tortilla wrapped around scrambled egg beaters with salsa (sometimes low fat cottage cheese to add bulk), and low fat cheese.
- egg beaters cooked in a cup (spray pam at bottom of coffee mug, pour a lil egg beater in, then cook in microwave for about 40 secs), and low fat cheese put on a whole wheat english muffin. SOmetimes I'll add canadian bacon or a sausage/veggie sausage patty.
or I'm just starting to get into Total w honey clusters and some fruit.
But I eat 2 breakfasts....I'll have one early like 7, then something else at 9-9:30. Cuz I eat just about every 2 1/2 or 3 hours!
Oatmeal is awesome. I mix one packet of instant Quaker weight control one, with one serving of quick cooking one, and have it with a toast. Around 400-440 calories (depending on toast). Very delicious.
30 grs of milk powder
30 grs of baby cereal (nestle)
30 grs of instant oatmeal
30 grs of protein powder (whey protein) (Only the day I go to Gym)
All of that in the blender with plenty of cold water, two to three minutes, and an easy to eat breakfast, kind of 500 cals (I am on a weight gaining diet)
There I have protein, carbs, fibre, and some fat (from the milk), and taste great :).
a hearty breakfast with not a lot of calories that i really like is kashi heart to heart honey oat waffles (so good and no syrup needed!), yoplait light yogurt, and a few strips of butterball turkey bacon. sometimes i'll eat a little of all 3, or i'll just do 2. tons of protein, fiber, and calcium, and so yummy! i've been eating a lot of honey bunches of oats lately (it's been on sale a lot at my grocery store). i like the one with strawberries, and i'll have a banana with it. eggs or egg beaters with turkey bacon or a thick slice of ham or canandian bacon is good.
by the way, morning star mini corn dogs rock! i can't believe how good they are!
I find all the oatmeal suggestions funny since she stated she hates oatmeal.
I like taking a slice of wholegrain toast and putting some peanut butter and some banana slices on it. It's very filling.
Also, I like to do one whole egg and one egg white and scramble it (no milk or anything) and just eat that on toast. I find that if I eat something with a bit a peanut butter or have eggs I stay fuller longer.
I just wanted to say I also do the thing where I am obsessed with one breakfast for several weeks and have it every day and then move on to something else.
Not that anyone else on earth wants to eat this, but right now my obsession is 2 cups cheerios, 1 cup almond dream...and wait to eat them until the cheerios are NICE AN SOGGGGEEEEEY!! YUM!
Before that it was vegan toaster waffles topped with 2 T PB2 powder mixed with 1/4 cup sugar free maple flavored syrup.
Before that it was apple slices dipped in PB2...
I always incorporate a fruit, so it's usually something like sliced apples, a tablespoon or two of peanut butter and maybe a yogurt. Or a yogurt and fruit. But fruit is my holy grail breakfast food...I must have a serving of fruit in the morning, even if I have eggs and bacon on the weekends or something.
Um, and a latte lol
right now Im on a kick where I have a thomas light english muffin with an egg and laughing cow wedge for my "healthy mcmuffin"
another favorite is a smoothie with light vanilla soymilk, pb2 and a ripe banana
or a whole wheat tortilla smeared w/pb (or pb2) and wrapped around a banana
If I'm in a hurry it's usually a luna bar or a Kashi golean roll. I've learned I need to have a decent amount of protien AND carbs to get through the morning!
