What is a good breakfast?

Quote  |  Reply

I am a converted non-breakfast eater, but have still been eating really light in the morning.  When I started dieting in January, I was informed that it is crucial to eat breakfast to get your metabolism going for the day, but since I have never eaten breakfast I started light.  I will always have a cup of natural grapefruit juice and a slice of cheese and that will be it and I will be full until time for my "morning snack" (I'm doing the thing where you eat a little something every couple of hours between meals to keep your metabolism up). But, this week I have started exercising.  I know that this means that I need to up my calories since I have been jogging, but hadn't really considered breakfast.  This morning I woke up FAMISHED.  I had my juice and cheese and that didn't even touch my hunger.  So I had a bowl of whole grain cereal.  Still starving.  Apparantly, now that I am exercising I need a more "hearty" breakfast.  Does anyone have any tips for me for healthy breakfast options?  Should I maybe add on some oatmeal or eggs?  I've heard that you don't want to eat too many carbs in the morning, but I know that there are alot of diet myths out there and that may not be true.  Also, I am usually in quite a hurry in the morning so I need something fairly quick and easy. I would have time to do eggs, but that is about as time-consuming as I could manage.   I appreciate any help!!!  Thanks!

I usually have a two or three egg white omelet with a tbs. of cheddar cheese melted on top.  A packet of quaker oatmeal, the high fiber one, 2 slices of turkey bacon and a piece of fruit.

I find this breakfast to fill me up pretty well.

It's usually not a question of what I do have for breakfast, it's more like what won't I have.   A lot of times I'll take my left overs from the previous night and have them for breakfast.  Think Breakfast Burrito, kitchen sink.  I can't think of anything I won't put in a wrap.  My favorite is wild rice and vegetables.    If I"m not being creative, I have 5-grain hot cereal from Bob's Red Mill.  Yummy!  I had french toast and Oscar Mayer bacon for dinner last night.  I guess it's what ever strikes me.  I go to bed thinking about what's to eat in the morning.

Have a bowl of oatmeal cooked in skim or soymilk, topped with flax seeds or nuts and fruit. Or you could have scrambled eggs on toast, or an egg omelette with veggies and cheese. French toast topped with fruit is a yummy choice, but that might take a little bit longer. You could make whole wheat pancake batter the night before and cook it up in the morning. You could also mix yogurt with muesli the night before and top that with fruit in the morning for something quick. Nut butter and half a banana on whole grain toast or english muffin, with a glass of milk. Nut butter, milk or yogurt, fruit, ice, protein powder, whatever you want blended up into a smoothie.

I eat a 4 egg white omelet with 2 ounces of super lean ham steak, onions, all cooked in a teaspoon of Olive oil.  I also eat anywhere between .75 of a cup and 2 full cups of Generic Bran Flakes (they are the best for you calorie wise) with .5 cup of skim milk.  This is about 385 calories and starts my day off proper. (the key for me is to cook the ham steak, onions and olive oil in a large batch once a week so can just add it to the eggs, it makes my prep time next to nothing every morning and helps me control the portions)

Some days I skip the bran flakes and add a quarter of a cup of black beans, some hot sauce and 1/8th of a cup of 2% cheese to my omelet.  This has about 320 calories in it

every single weekday i have the same thing- it gets me through 4 hours of classes without getting hungry:

1/2 cup old fashioned oats cooked with water, mix in 1 tblsp peanut butter- creamy and delicious

plus 1/2 a grapefruit, sliced, mixed with fat free cottage cheese or yogurt with a little cinnamon and nutmeg

~enough good carbs for fuel and energy, lots of vitamin C from the grapefruit and sustaining fat and protien

I'm usually not big on breakfast. On a 'meh' day I have an apple or a yogurt and call it good. If I'm a bit hungrier I have a small bowl of cereal (always 200 cals total or less). If I'm truly hungry, I'll make eggs or french toast or something. I discovered a SUPER low cal way to make great french toast....2 slices low cal bread (I use Sara Lee Light-40 cals a slice). Then 1/2 cup egg beaters (60 cals) mixed with a hint of cinnamon and vanilla). Topped with a sugar free syrup (the brand I use is 20 cals for 1/4 cup! YA!). Slice some strawberries and VOILA! Delicious, filling, low cal breakfast :D

On work mornings I have low fat vanilla yogurt w/low fat granola and blueberries - yum!

On weekends I have oatmeal with walnuts and a spoonful of honey - double yum!

today i made 2eggs with peppers and lite cheddar cheese in a flour tortilla...then i dipped it in salsa. veryyy good but i probably could have gone with just one egg
