Is this a good calorie deficit?.

Quote  |  Reply

Hello everyone,my name is lee am 15 years old ,i suffer from depression and gained  4 stone because of it meaning i was 13 stone at 13 years of age not the best thing :(  i am now 11 and a half stone 161 pounds and my aim is to drop 2 stone.

I have just orderd a treadmill because after 3 months of doing everything wrong,i eated healthy food,i did weight training and it did nothing accept muscles and toned arms and didn't get rid of the fat,i actually thought if i built muscle all over my body the muscles would use the fat as stored energy but that logic failed.

My plan in the summer break is to eat 1000 calories and burn 2000 calories creating a calorie deficit of 1000 per day that means 2 pounds lost per week,7 weeks 1 stone and such...i was wondering if someone could help give me some adivce?.

Thanks.

You will gain weight if you eat that little. At your age, you need to be eating way over 2000 calories a day. Then, exercise. That exercise will give you a healthier deficit. Realistically, you should be eating back the calories you exercise, but anywho....You need to eat! 1000 calories a day is not enough to fuel your body for being in a coma, let alone when growing (as your are at your age), and working out.

If you're doing 2000 calories worth of exercise per day and eating 1000 calories of this back, than that is fine.  AS LONG AS you realise that you are burning about 2000 calories just being alive, and you need to eat thoes as well.  SO, if you are burning 2000 calories through exercise and eating 1000 plus the 2000 you burn anyway, so eating 3000 calories a day, than you will be fine AND you will lose weight.  You should lose about 2 lbs a week doing this.

If you ONLY eat 1000 calories and work off an additional 2000, ie 4000 total burned through the day, you will have a 3000 calorie deficit, which is enough that your body will be starving, your metabolism will slow down and you may do permanent damage to your body.  Please do not do this.

Is 1500 eaten a day and 2500 burn't any better for my metabolism and thanks for the advice i will eat more.

I also wonder what happends say i burn 2500 cals per day and say i have supper of something high in carbs at night, will i gain weight or will my body just use it while am sleeping ?.

As stated above its not suitable at your age to eat only 1000 calories, it is well  below the minimum that a teenager requires and as such if you eat too little your body will simply store all the fat so you will defeat yourself by not eating enough.

I agree with all those who said your original 1000 calorie plan is way too low!  I'm not a nutritionist or an expert, but please consider at the least doing some online research specific to teen males.  Your doctor may also provide you fantastic advice and ideas to help you.  Something I didn't see discussed is SLEEP.  You body MUST recover and have adequate rest or you will lose muscle mass, and muscle is what helps you BURN MORE FAT!  If I can find the original resource, i will post it; however, I have read research that teen boys need more sleep than they generally get.  In fact, getting additional sleep at this critical stage actually positively affects males' growth/height.  The taller you are, the more weight you can carry and still be slim and healthy!  I struggled with my weight at times in my youth, so I do understand your plight.  My favorite vice was severe food deprivation - while running competitive track (long distance)!  I can't tell you how many years it took me to straighten out my metabolism.  I will work hard to ensure my two kids don't make the same mistakes, and I hope I've helped you too, however slightly.  Good luck - you can do this the RIGHT WAY, I know it!
