What is a good Different Breakfast Food?

Quote  |  Reply

The normal, eggs and toast or cereal is boring.  I love of course my salami sandwiches for breakfast, but there I am racking up the sodium, which I am trying to watch.  Oatmeal has been gagging me.  Anyone have any good breakfast food ideas?  I have also eaten the Fiber One bars and already bored with them.

Take care all and thanks for your input. God Bless/

- You don't always have to eat "breakfast" food... how about grilled chicken, salmon...? Sauteed Onions & Peppers are also pretty good and will help you get in your vegetable quota!

- You can eat some berries if you would like... I always thought baked sliced apples & pears with cinnamon on top sounded good... Perhaps with some yogurt if your into that?

I feel the same way. I have had a boneless skinless chicken breast for breakfast before. LOL ya it sounds kinda strange but it's what I wanted.

I made pumpkin bran muffins. It called for raisins but honestly I liked the ones without raisins better and I made the recipe here on CC. It's 195 calories for one muffin and loaded with fiber.

i love oatmeal, personally, but i have it with some fruit mixed in yogurt on the side topped with cinnamon, with any kind of fruit yiou can have about 150 cals and minimal sodium depending on the yogurt.

i have started having french toast alot, its pretty health if you use whole wheatand pass on the syrup- i use a little brown sugar and some fruit to sweeten it up. even better- if you bring some orange juice to a near boil and then simmer it a while it makes a orangey syrup for pancakes, toastm yogurt topping, ect... i like buckwhet pancakes with that syrup.

have you ever made a frittata? loook up a recipe- they are so good and pretty easy, and one of the few egg dished that can be reheated. i found one with zucchini and parmesan cheese that is pretty good

You can change how you do your eggs, add some red and yellow peppers and low cal feta is yummy.

Protein in the morning is always good- so there is nothing that says you cant have some turkey for breakfast.  giasbash6260 is right- if you aren't a fan of breakfast food, or get bored with t easy- it doesn't have to be "breakfast" food.

Personally I alternate between boiled eggs, high fiber oatmeal, cereal, and fruit.

One of my favorites is always the gool ol' egg sandwich... I use Egg Beaters egg whites (1/2c), 2 slices Wonder Bread Light Wheat Bread, and a slice of Kraft Free sharp cheddar cheese - yummy!

Or you could have some low cal, fat free yogurt and add berries and granola...

I always like the Thomas Double Fiber Honey Wheat English Muffins... you can toast it and add low cal peanut butter, fruit spread, or I Can't Believe It's Not Butter.  Could add a banana along with it, or maybe a protein shake.

There's always the Fiber One Pancake mix, or some Kashi or Special K Red Berries Waffles... along with some egg whites.  Or cottage cheese.

  • Scrambled tofu w/ veggies and spices.
  • Burrito filled w/ veggies and whatever you want.
  • Fruit/Protein smoothies.

Hiya. Good advice, so far. I'm one of those "weird" people who really CAN'T eat breakfast... It makes me feel physically ill. So I've been doing a Slim-Fast shake in the mornings to give my metabolism a boost, and give me those extra vitamins, etc.

You might try a fruit and yogurt smoothie or something along those lines first thing in the morning, too... Surprisingly filling, delicious, and gives one a good burst of energy.

I second the french toast idea. It's as simple as beating two eggs, adding a bit of cinnamon and vanilla extract, then dipping two or three slices of whole wheat bread in it and placing it in a pan sprayed with a bit of cooking spray. I like to defrost frozen fruits to top it with (some good combinations are strawberries and bananas, peaches and blueberries, strawberries and blueberries, really anything you want) in the microwave until they melt down and are still whole, but have a syrupy consistency.

I've also made pumpkin french toast which was really good. Just add some pumpkin and spices to the egg wash, and maybe a bit of milk to thin it out if it needs it.

That along with a yogurt or glass of milk and you're set!

Great ideas!  What is a good way to cook some chicken in the morning to make it not like a dinner meal?

The french toast sounds good.  I remember when I was a kid we use to tear up the bread and stir in the egg mixture and then serve with syrup.  As a diabetic, I use sugar free so that makes it not that bad for me but. . . for DH that was a great reminder of a breakfast food!  Thanks so much you all.

I am glad we had this forum to get suggestions.  You all are GREAT!

chicken in the morning..i treat it just like turkey!

try it in a tortilla wrap with eggs (or egg beaters) and salsa and peppers

or kind of shred it up and put it on whole weat toast with melted cheese and tomato and turkey bacon!

try it in an omellete with tomatoes and avocado

hope that helps!

I'm loving Nature's Path brand frozen waffles, topped with apple butter, blueberries & chopped walnuts.

Hey Akela! I just want to say that I am not a breakfast person either so I don't exactly eat it... but I am sorry to tell you this... Slim Fast is not very healthy. Yes people can either agree or disagree and you can either ignore me or take my advice... No matter what I am going to state why I believe this...

Alright so take a Creamy Chocolate Shake... 190 calories, doesn't seem to bad, no but.. then you scroll down... 2.5 grams of saturated fat?!? From where, huh? 6 grams of total fat? I wonder where the 3.5 other fat grams come from... then we take a look at the carbs...25 grams... alright, not terrible & with 5 grams of fiber, that's alright but look at that SUGAR! 16 grams: YIKES! You are definitely doing your body more harm than good! And look at the actual ingredients! Can you pronounce half of it? Corn Oil, Maltodextrin, Fructose, Canola Oil, Hydrogenated Soybean Oil, Sucralose, Artificial Flavors & Sweeteners... these things are no good... And the weirdest part is that is says, NON FAT MILK... yet the shake contains 6 grams of fat... which MEANS that these fats come from the hydrogenated soybean oil... which means there is trans fats in the shake...

*If you really want to kick your metabolism up a bit in the morning, grab a hard boiled egg & a piece of whole grain toast (with 3 grams of fiber + per serving & no high fructose corn syrup or trans fats)

*I know I might come off as harsh, but I really just want to make sure people are eating healthfully so they can enjoy their lives to their fullest!

You could try plain yogurt or greek yogurt with fruit, nuts and granola....oatmeal with soymilk and fruit....whole wheat or oatbran pancakes made with banana/nuts/berries or watever!...omlette with broccoli/onion/spinach...

Hi, giasbash6260 hon. I don't think you were harsh at all. I like getting advice as I'm new to all of this. I am going to *eventually* follow your advice... I don't disagree with anything you pointed out... Bur right now, in my defense, (as it were) I'm currently focusing on eating BETTER. (There's always room for improvement, I suppose!)

The Slim-Fast (for me) helps with my "sweets" cravings more so then fruit. Also I figure since it's a liquid meal it will hopefully get digested quickly. I'm working on getting my fresh fruits and veggies, now, but sometimes it's just faster and easier to whip up a shake (I use the powders/skim milk in the blender... And love the vanilla with a banana thrown in...) But I will work on getting off of those and maybe start making fruit smoothies or something.

Thanks for the info! Everything I learn helps me get a little closer to my goal.

Wow what great ideas, I'm going to use some of these myself. I'm into boring breakfasts and exciting suppers, cause I'm to darned tired most of the time to care about breakfast. So Thanks.

Wow! Giasbash6260. A simple shake as Slim Fast sure is fooling people.  It is great you have such a good resource as your mother and a good example.  Thanks for sharing that information.  I went to the GNC store last night to look at shake mixtures for protein.  As a diabetic I don't want more than 20 percentage of protein to avoid Kidney disease problems.

As a food conscious person, I am trying to limit my carbs to 50 percent since I match up my insulin with my intake of carbs. I have my good days and my bad days.

I think it is great to see a young person such as your self look so nice.  Keep up the good work at getting the right dietary program for you to stay healthy for a lifetime.

Take care and God Bless.

Don't forget grits and cream of wheat, much more tolerable than oatmeal, but not as good for you.

i make homeade granola every few weeks... its sooo much better than that processed crap and pretty healthy, though maybe a bit high in sugar... anyway i love adding it to yogurt in the morning

i usually have an orange or apple to get my metabolism off to an early start... and a good cereal or poached egg is always a good choice... i like allbran strawberry medley- watch out for high sugars even in those other "healthy cereals"- (actually, i usually use skim or soy milk and sometimes add sweetener... even tho im a little wary of the aspartame and try to avoid it)

sauteeing peppers and mushrooms with some egg and a cheesestring... omelet or scrambled form in a whole grain wrap...

...i love cheesestrings... only 80 cals and funnn

also i love carbs so i try to get them out of the way early in the day- help you feel full longer but i tend to crave them a lot lol

I've been gagged by oatmeal in the past, too.  But I'm going to take a shot at the gag factor just to get the fiber.  Here's how I plan to do it:

1/4 cup wheat bran

1/3 cup regular rolled oats

This looks to be 130 calories and 9g of total fiber (2.5g soluble)

Mix dry, then saute with a little PAM until it smells toasty, then boil the heck out of it in a cup of water.  Top it with something savory, like I'd use on grits - hot sauce or cheese crumbles.

If this comes out halfway decent tasting, I'd consider chilling it, then molding it into a patty and frying it for sandwich filling.  The drier I can get it the less sticky and gaggy it'll be.

EDIT 1/28 AM - Not half bad.  The oats are still in there, soft and well cooked, but the wheat bran fluffs it up and keeps it from turning into the familiar gaggy goo.  At these ratios it's dry/moist, has a texture kind of like cooked kashi, and a roasted grain flavor like puffed wheat.  It's filling for only 130 calories, and would make a good side dish with other meals. The hot sauce was OK but this might taste better with just plain salt and pepper (maybe some chopped nuts), and some cheese on the side.

I eat eggo frozen waffles a lot. The nutrigrain blueberry ones are the best and fill me up. It is okay to have something kinda sugary in the morning, throughout the day you will burn it off. i love oatmeal, maybe try quaker oatmeal weight control maple and brown sugar. it fills me up till lunchtime so maybe try that. breakfast is probably not your favorite meal im guessing. if all else comes to fail try carnation instant breakfast, you mix it with milk and gives you lots of protein, or even slimfasts work.
