Good Ice Cream?

Yesterday I found Edy's Fat Free, No Sugar added vanilla and chocolate swirl ice cream. For me at least, it had the best nutritional info for any low fat/low calorie/fat free ice cream, frozen yogurt, sherbet or sorbet that i've seen. It had for 1/2 cup: 100 calories and 4 grams of sugar (presumably from the skim milk). Normally you can find a frozen yogurt or sorbet for the same amount of calories but much higher in sugar, and it seems that the lower the sugar content, the higher the fat and/or calorie content. It did have artificial sweeteners (malodextrin, asparteme), but for someone like me who doesn't mind artificial sweeteners, would this ice cream be bad if I fit it into my calorie alotment?

i wouldnt recommened any low fat or fat free ice cream, they are worse than the original. Saturated fat from dairy isnt  bad. its the  high fructose corn syrup, skimmed milk, and chemicals.
i agree that the chemicals may be thought of as "bad," but give me a break - you're saying that saturated fat is good but skim milk is bad? don't get me wrong i appreciate your input which is why i made the post but i totally disagree with your reasoning.

i agree with her, not to start a debate but whole milke is better for you than skimmed

i hate to beat a dead horse, and i don't want to get into a debate either, but i have to respectfully disagree. skim milk has zero fat yet has the same amount of sugar as regular whole milk in addition to as many if not MORE nutrients. i buy stonyfield farms skim milk, and the skim milk vs. the whole milk yields the following:

WHOLE: 150 calories per cup, 8 grams of fat, 5 grams of saturated fat, 12 grams of sugar, 6% DV vitamin A, 30% DV calcium

SKIM: 80 calories per cup, 0 fat, 12 grams of sugar, 10% DV vitamin A, 30% DV calcium

One may be able to make the argument that whole milk is more "natural" than skim milk, but based on calories, fat, and nutrients, skim tops whole milk any day of the week.

I'm with you on the skim milk thing and to answer your original question: If you can fit it into your calorie allotment then by all means have a cup of ice cream everyday - it's not as nutritionally void as other "treat foods". It actually had calcium and vitamins. Sure it's high(ish) in sugar - but it IS a treat and a pretty good one I think :)

To answer your question, if it fits into your calories then go ahead and have it. But, I don't like the taste of artificial sweeteners, so I would have probably rather had one of theirs that has sugar. Breyer's makes an all natural ice cream that is pretty good, but not that low in calories :\

saturated fat is porbably loads better than chemicals.
im not saying its beneficial, but im saying its not dangerous, i mean cmon, in nature you cant find meat without saturated fat connectted to it. However one thing you never find is polyunsaturated fats in large ammounts.
your body needs some saturated fat, more than polyunsaturated.

granted, i still think we should get most of our fat as monounsaturated and omega's

this would entail avocado, olive oil, nuts, seeds, nut butter, fish, etc.

But whole milk from good sources has alot of "healthy" saturated fat, its not all made the same. it also has omegas, etc. cows milk is really only as good as the grass it eats.

but good sources of healthy satuarated fat include cream, butter, coconut oil is extremely healthy, etc.

dont make it all of your diet, but dont discount it or try to keep it too low.

besides, ben and jerrys is awesome..

ps: my reasoning with the skim milk is that its usually homogenized(homogenized milk has its protiens and fats blasted into a mutatated form at high speed) and  then ultra pasturized  to oblivion, plus the fat in the milk usually has most of its good vitamins and nutrieints. plus it tastes rather boring.

the only issue i've had with it is if i eat more than one serving per day, it bothers my stomach. that's probably due to some of the artificial additives. but a single serving shouldn't be a problem, especially calorie wise.

but if you don't mind artificial sweeteners, definitely blue bunny.

 

I've never seen the soy ice cream recommended above but I really like Soy Delicious by Turtle Mountain. I think they're organic and they're sweetened with fruit juice, not sugar. The calorie amount is usually in the 110-135/half cup range.

i would have to second soy delicious, however i personally dont do soy anymore, they also make one with coconut milk, which is very good.

I love Stonyfield Farms organic, non-fat frozen yogurts! They even have a coffee flavor! It's nice and creamy, with 100cal per 1/2 cup.  In fact, I fancy some right now!

 I love the fudge brownie.  I put cool whip on top to make it 100 cals.  That way I don't feel like I had to miss out.

Ice cream is my downfall and now I am drinking fruit smoothies.

I makeup my own buying adding frozen fruit,yogurt,juice or milk, and ice.

I have also made them with vanilla yogurt and adding sugar free pudding mixes. Then I added skim milk and ice.

I make them different every time I make one.

This morning I made one with vanilla yogurt,frozen blueberries and pineapple,orange juice,a banana, and ice.

I find myself not craving the the ice cream .
