What is a good protein supplement?
I am vegetarian and I can't stand tofu. I also can not eat protein shakes due to their high fat content ( have high cholestrol). My CC analysis is always low on protein. Any suggestions for an alternative source of protein? Thanks
are you vegan? I get a ton of protein from plain non fat yogurt and cottage cheese.. really good with added fruit and kashi cereal. As a matter of fact a lot of kashi products are a good source of protein. If you don't like tofu, maybe you would like tempeh more? I prefer it, its a firmer texture. Also edamame beans, nuts, and quinona are good protien sources. I hardly ever eat tofu but I get about 100 grams a day of protein from these sources.
fyi - the protein powder I used in my shakes has 0 grams of fat. It is 100 cals and 18 grams of protein, I found it at trader joe's. Hope this helps!
Also I've recently discovered the wonders of greek yogurt. Fage 0% Fat free yogurt has 20g of protein per cup (&only 120 cal. and 0g fat!). Its really good in the morning with fat free blueberry yogurt on top then microwaved frozen mixed berries (so you get all the juices mixed in). Ahh I love it!.
Eggwhites of course, such as eggbeaters are high in protein as well. But I'm not big on eggs.
Also, try switching out regular cereals with protein-packed ones.. kashi go lean crunch and regular both have a decent amount of protein (keeps you full). Nature's path also makes a protein fortified cereal thats really good as well...
I guess just dig around? Nuts are also a good way of getting a little extra protein and good fats as well...
Thanks for the suggestions. I did not know that there was a protein supplement with no fat. I am not a vegan so I will try to eat the items that you mentioned. Thank you very much.
try one by apex max
only 1.5g of fat
90 calories
16g of protein
first, keep in mind you might not need as much protein as you think.... the guidelines are for at least 10% of your daily diet... which isn't too hard to meet, especially if your not vegan. i don't know if you've tried the soy/imitation meats (like morninstar/boca burgers, chicken, etc.) but they have a lot of protein in them, also beans, nuts, lentils, peanut butter all have protein... soy milk and cheese.... and if your getting a variety of veggies they have protein in them too! i didn't realize how much protein was in veggies, but there is, just make sure to get a good variety of them.
I agree with all of the above, especially the yogurt!
Milk and soymilk are also both good sources of protein. Soymilk has 7 g of protein per cup, and I think milk has a little higher.
Also, probably a lot of grains you are eating have decent amounts of protein in them-- I know usually a piece of whole wheat bread has 4 or 5 g or protein, and oatmeal has about 4 g too. They can really add up!
What I used to do when I was worried about my protein intake was eat a big plate of egg whites and ketchup every morning. I really like my eggs and ketchup. Anyway, I moved onto other sources of protein, because I got sick of eggs.
Thanks again for all your great suggestions. I am an extremely picky eater. I tried boca burger and soy milk and did not like them at all. I am also a firm believer that no more than 10% of your calories should come from animal products so that eliminates eggs, yogurt, cottage cheese and milk. I have started weight lifting and don't seem to be able to make muscles like my husband! I am going to try the fat free protein and Kashi cereal and edamame and the other mentioned items. Thanks again everyone.
visit buildingbrawn.com or netrition.com. there are a ton of protein supplements for anyone... I like Dymalean or Dymatize Elite.
Dymalean vanilla/berry/chocolate has:
212 cals
2.5g fat
42g protein
5 carbs
5g fiber
You can't beat that... it's like $18-25 for a box of 20 packets. If you like it enough buy jumbo and get the tub for $40 like I did and save yourself some money. I like to blend these up with 1 Tbs of Vanilla, 1 Tbs of instant Coffee, and 1 Tbs of Jello Fat-Free Sugar-Free Chocolate/Cheesecake/Butterscotch/Vanilla puddings. (whatever the mood I'm in). Add about 16oz water and 6-7 ice cubes and you have yourself one LEGIT shake :). Totally yum...
Yes you can eat all the above stuff, but it doesn't work for me, too high in cals to get my protein goals (I need 130g a day). My fats ingested is usually in the 15-20g per day range.
I also reccomend egg whites as they are yummy and you can eat them and take in all the protein you want. Egg protein isn't as easily absorbed as whey isolate though, so try for soy-based products if you can't eat meats. I also add Azumaya Lite Tofu to my shakes for thickness (tasteless and definitely cannot tell if you blend it with water first before adding ice/protein mix).
G'luck!!!
