So I just finished reading "Gaining" by Aimee Liu, an excellent book about recovering from eating disorders. It's not triggering at all (at least for me) and really helped rationalize feelings I've been having and shows the psychological aspects behind EDs as well. Also, there are many examples of successful recoveries and when I've been having a bad moment, the book has turned out to be a great resource [it even stopped me from binging a couple of times]. Just thought I would throw that out there as a recommendation. I'm sure many of you recovering from an ED have heard of it/read it, but if not, I would! Although it was a major source of all my procrastination this past week I like to think it was time well spent.
PS. I just ordered the book "Wasted", if anyone has read that and has any thoughts on it, please let me know! I know its not exactly an "upper" but I hope it will give me strength as well.
Have a wonderful day, everyone!
Wasted was really insightful and good, but definitely triggering at times, so I'd read it with caution. Her experience was slightly similar to mine (but im trying to recover! hopefully) so i think it helped me in making me feel less insane...haha if that makes sense. Her thought processes are reallly realistic and true (at least to me)
good luck with everything!
I'm reading that right now! I'm only on the first section, but so far it's amazing. I've never really realized that there are so many people EXACTLY like me. I find it very informative and enjoyable! I also recommend it.
yes, I also read Gaining by Aimee Liu and it was very insightful. I don't know about you, but when I started to get better from my eating disorder, I started reading a lot of books about the subject because the more knowledge I gained, then the stronger I would be to beat the darn thing. It really helped too! I haven't read Wasted yet...I'll have to give that one a try.
Wasted is probably the best book on Eating Disorders that I've read - but it's very triggering. So, to echo clairesse1008, I'd read with caution.
Oh, thanks! I've been wanting to find something with that topic to read about.![]()
Hopefully I can find the book without buying it. I'm so dang broke and when I do get money, I'm getting that shirt from the mall. Haha.
I don't mean to sound like an idiot, but what do you all mean by 'triggering'? Are you talking about emotions?
Triggering is partly emotional, yes. Basically, (and this may not be so much a textbook definition as a common-use one), to be triggered means to awaken Ed thoughts or tendencies that may lead to a relapse or reconsidering recovery. So yes, it's largely emotional, but more psychological. . . make sense?
I just read an excerpt of "Gaining," and as soon as I have twenty bucks to my name (okay, twenty bucks that isn't spoken for already!) I will definitely be buying the whole thing. The chapter I found online blew my mind, and I'm positively itching to continue!
Self-proclaimed bookworm finds new material: no work will be getting done in the near future. :P
This is great to hear because I just ordered for my library today! We are currently working on our ED section. It is also good to learn about this "triggering" response to some books out there. I wasn't even aware that this kind of information could be harmful to those recovering from an ED. Thanks for the review! If there are any other books that have helped you please send me a message about them.
