Good Snacks?

Quote  |  Reply

Hi,

I really need some help with snacks! I read that it's good to eat every 3-4 hours so the body's metabolism keeps working...

But what should I eat? Something that can be taken with me to school? Some kind of healthy snack, that isn't high in calories?

Hi kazal,

I usually have the small carrot sticks and sugar snap peas in a container that I carry with me. Hard-boiled eggs are a good source of protein. 1/4 c. raw almonds are great, too. One more thing - a cup of Dannon Light 'n' Fit yogurt will help you with a sweet tooth and is a good source of calcium.

On a limited basis, fat-free pretzels might help get you over a hunger attack.

i love part skim mozarella string cheese (80 calories, lots of protein and calcium). i also like granola bars and fruit (things like grapes or dried cranberries are easy to take with you)

I have been on my diet for just under 5 weeks and I have lost 15 pounds.  I try to eat every 3-4 hours and keep my carbs relatively low, I exercise at least 40 minutes a day, and I drink a lot of water (with zero cal, sugar free water flavors).  On this diet I have averaged just over 3 pounds lost a week which is awesome.  If you can stick with it and find snacks you love, eating three 250 cal meals and three more 100 - 200 calorie snacks will definitely help you lose weight.  I haven't cut carbs out completely but I do try to limit them (although many snacks that are portable contain carbs) and I also watch my sugar and sodium intake.  Good luck!

I know sometimes carrying around snacks is hard, especially when it needs to be refridgerated (my favorite is yogurt), but here are some of my favorite low-cal snacks that are easy to take with you anywhere.

Quakes or any other kind of rice cake.  The caramel ones taste better than a cookie.

Pretzels are good and usually low in calories.  If you can find Pretzel Crisps, most flavors are completely fat free.  I love the garlic kind.

Any kind of fruit but especially apples, bananas, clementines and plums.  These are easy to eat on the go.  Be careful with dried fruits, they are VERY high in sugars.

You could try any of the Slim-Fast or Special K snack bars but be careful, some of those are high in fat, especially saturated fat.  The positive is that some are also high in protein and fiber which help to fill you up.

Cereal in a plastic baggie.

Low fat english muffin with low fat peanut butter or fat free cream cheese.

I walk around grocery stores and look for new snacks once a week to make sure I don't get bored.

Healthy Snacks:

- Bell Peppers, Cherry Tomatoes, Kimchi, Nori Sheets, Hard Boiled Eggs, Turkey Slices (breast), Canned Tuna, Salmon, Sardines, Chicken Breast, Celery, Cucumbers, Cabbage

Great list.  I would add unsalted, shelled sunflower seeds and unsalted, shelled pumpkin seeds.

Be aware they both contain fat, but are low in saturated, and they carry great health benefits.  One serving (about 1 oz) will keep the engine running.  Chomp, chomp, chomp, and you're on your way - no fridge needed.

I would add that pretzels are my absolute favorite - however most Americans eat waaaaay too much salt (I think the recommendation is 2000mg per day?) and pretzels have a ton of salt baked in, never mind what's on the outside.
