What are some good substitutes for salt?
Asked by anonymous on Sep 20, 2009 in Nutrition

I need to start cutting down on my salt, but am hooked on it.  Are there any good substitutes out there?  Are Nu-Salt and Mrs. Dash healthy substitutes for salt?

Answer

Mrs. Dash salt-free herb and spice blends and Nu-Salt potassium chloride make good salt substitutes, although you should ask your doctor if potassium chloride is right for you.  To add more flavor to food without using salt, use lemon juice, vinegars (especially Balsamic Vinegar Reduction Sauce), garlic, onions, celery, low-sodium catsup (Heinz makes a good one), low-sodium mustard and sauce mixes, and all herbs and spices.  Visit natural and organic food stores as well as large supermarkets to find low sodium staples, such as canned tomatoes, chicken stock, salad dressings, etc.  Also invest in a few cookbooks that feature low-salt recipes to get more ideas.  Expect it to take a few weeks for your taste buds to adjust to a low salt diet.
