so i know "the grapfruit diet" is a load of crap but i did read that adding half a grapefruit or a cup of grapefruit juice before every meal can lead to a weight loss of about 4 lbs on average over 12 weeks. i like anything where i eat a little more and lose a few pounds without changina nything else. So ive been doing it for about three days and i have felt so full all the time. its almost too full becasue i need to force myself to eat a little more just to kee[p my calories up enough to not go into starvation. i have had only 1600 cals today, my usual is about 2100 and i have to force feed myself a couple tblsp of peanut butter of something cos i just had a big dinner and i am so full. plus!- its only 1.99 for 6 grapefruit around here. plus!- i had some oatmeal and grapefruit with cottage cheese for breakfast and then i went to work and couldnt talke a lunch for about 6 hours- and i was full all the way up until lunch! so far so good with this- anyone else try to add grapefruit to their diet with good or bad effects?

Grapefruit doesn't have any magical properties.  The slightly sour taste might take the edge off your appetite but that's all, really.  The main effect is going to be mental... if you think it's going to help, it'll help.

I've had half a grapefruit every day along with my breakfast the past week. Today is my "weigh day" so maybe I'll chek back with you and let you know!

I eat grapefruit a lot, but because I like it and it's good for you.  There's very little caloric value in grapefruits, so I guess it would have the same effect as drinking a big glass of water before every meal.  Plus the vitamins are good for you.  Other than that, I doubt any weight loss properties, other than being a good nutritious fruit.

actually grapefruit does increase your metabolism. so it actually is very good for you

Graperfuits have very few cals and sugar and are very healthy.

I know there are rumors that grapefruit affects your body's metabolism. I don't know about this. However, I do know that grapefruit can affect how your body metabolizes several drugs. Compounds in grapefruit can interact with your medications so if you are on prescriptions please consult your doctor before eating it often.

Can grapefruit alter your metabolism?

Grapefruit could affect nutrient metabolism.  In a 12-week pilot study, scientists at the Scripps Clinic monitored weight and insulin levels on 100 obese people.  Before each meal three times a day, some of the participants ate ½ grapefruit or drank grapefruit juice while others did not. The grapefruit-consumers lost about 3.5 lbs while the non-eaters lost only ½ lb.  Chemicals in grapefruit might reduce levels of insulin, a hormone that helps with the regulation of fat metabolism. A smaller post-meal insulin spike could help the body to process energy more efficiently, which could lead to less fat storage.  More research is needed to confirm the hypothesis, but meanwhile, there is no harm in eating grapefruit.
