Hey all,
I don't know if anyone else suffers from this but I sure could use the imput.
I have been on my "lifestyle change" (I hate the word diet) for about a year or so, ofcourse during the holidays I strayed and am now getting ready for summer. I am used to tracking calories and drinking my water etc. Now two days ago I got to the 125 lbs mark (im 5'4") and celebrated by buying outfit (every five lbs is a new outfit reward) now yesterday evening I got back on the scale to make sure I wasn't hallucinating and to update my food and weight diary it was still 125lbs
This morning I get up and its 128lbs!!! am in a twilight zone haze where gravity changes overnight???? I did my workouts and had my calorie friendly foods and did not stray at all. so how can i gain three lbs OVERNIGHT??????? is my toothpaste made out of lead???
has anyone else experienced this? and what could be the cause? and to make sure it wasn't the scale I weighed stuff that I knew the exact weight of.
any help would be appreciated because right now I am so depressed that im pigging out on my baby carrot supply :-(

Step away from the carrots. Granted, they're healthy, but no binging, or you'll start ACTUALLY gaining.
You could be gaining muscle from your workouts (it weighs more than fat). Also, you could be retaining water (yes, it COULD add 3 pounds) ... has your sodium intake increased? Have you been drinking ENOUGH water to compensate and flush the sodium out? Is your period due to arrive or are you on it? Any of these things could be the reason ...

really???
gaining from carrots?? they are only 35 cals per serving and are full of fiber. Could you explain this? I am really interested in understanding that.
as for the water and sodium I am pretty sure i stick to my regular amount. is there a basic formula of sodium vs water?
thanks

Haha. Ya, I know what you mean about the gravity change. I had purposely weighed myself right before bed one day, and when I got up in the morning, in the same clothes (not taking anything on or off) I weighed 3 pounds lighter... It was pretty odd... didn't go to the restroom or anything. It's like 3 pounds magically disappeared into thin air... Seriously, does anyone know the answer to this?!?
You always weigh less in the morning. At night your muscles are tense from the days activities and in the morning they are relaxed.
Hmm... ok, cool, finally got an answer. Haha. But hey, how does tension create more weight... It's still the same mass, so it technically shouldn't have a weight difference... Ah nevermind. Doesn't matter. I got an answer anyway.
The other thing is, in the evening your body has had a day's worth of food, liquid, moving around, etc.
I love weighing myself right after I get up & go to the bathroom, I'm at my lightest then. If I weigh myself even 30 min later after making coffee, etc I can weigh up to 1.5 pounds heavier. My weight goes up 2-3 pounds during the day then is lighter again in the a.m.
I've decided to stop trying to figure it out and just use my lightest weight! Keep on keepin' on!

No, you probably wouldn't gain from eatin' carrots alone. I kinda meant that you might start munchin' on other things ... I know I get sick of carrots after awhile.
The only thing that would make your weight fluctuate 3 pounds overnight is water retention. A full bowel might add a half a pound if you ate a lot of fiber the day before. Stay away from salt and flush your system with plenty of water (not soft drinks, not tea - water). And be sure to poop!
I have to monitor water retenion for medical reasons and the most I've ever gained overnight was 6 pounds. I ate something salty at bedtime and drank water all night, and didn't pee. That'll do it!
There is no way you can gain a pound of fat overnight - 1 pound takes 3,500 calories more than you burn.
Stay away from the scale for a few days and stick to your meal plan! Now is not time time to go overboard with eating!!!
Good Luck

Rocker-gal, as far as your question to the sodium vs water; 1 part sodium affects (holds on to) 180 parts water. As far as the rest of it, there are too many factors to determine why you went up 3 pounds. You know you didn't actually gain 3 pounds. Just do the math and unless you ate 10,500 calories without burning any since the last time you weighed it was just a normal fluctuation. As for muscle tensity, it's not actually the muscle that causes the fluctuation but tension ( it causes hormonal changes in the body and it fluctuates from day to day) Before you say you don't feel stressed, your body gets stressed every day through normal living without your feeling stressed out. Congratulations on hitting 125. Is this your goal weight?
thanks all for your imput. (im still lost on the carrott thing though)
Unfortunately the scale hasn't taken back the 3lbs :-( but thats ok, gives me some extra motivation.
my goal is actually 120lbs and I am soooo close. But actually i would love to trade my 120lbs goal to one of those rock hard abs and super toned legs :-). So I think I will start doing some more excercise on those areas which will probably keep me at 125 but more toned.
again, thanks all for the imput, but I would still love some more info on the gaining weight from carrots because I do binge on them.

you can gain weight from eating too many calories of anything. heck, oranges are great for you too-but eat 45 of them a day...
I know alot of people think if they binge eat fruit or veggies, it's okay because it's healthy foods. but binge eating is an unhealthy eating habit, regardless of what the food is. after all, what if one day you're out of carrots, and those oreos are just sitting there in the cupboard...
you have to consider more than the calories. you can get too much of any vitamin too-people have actually turned orange from eating too many carrots.
in the long run it's better to work on what's causing you to binge eat and resolve the behaviour rather than changing the food you binge on.

I was watching Good Eats on the food network awhile back, and he did a show on carrots. He mentioned how they're good for your eyesite, so during world war 2 the government gave all of their pilots tons of carrots in order to help their vision out. It actually DID tint their skin an orange color, so be careful.
And yes, drop the carrots and drink some water. Carrots ARE good for you, but as chocorific said, too much of anything (whether its healthy or not) is bad for you. Say you get absent minded and pig out on em. 30 calories per carrot, and you eat 10 of em. That's 300 calories that you probably didnt plan on eating. Hell, that's enough carrots to equal a slice of pizza! Not to mention all the natural carbs and sugars in them. I'm not saying to avoid them completely, but don't overeat anything.
Oh and uhh...yeah, same thing happens to me. Somehow I'm 2 lbs lighter in the morning than at night. I don't know why, but I'll take it. 222.6 when I went to bed last night, 220.8 this morning. I am NOT complaining!! But I don't get it...
