Greek Yogurt is not as good for you as regular (source Shape magazine)?
Some of you may have seen my other post - I'm really into Greek yogurt lately as it gives me needed protein (i've been having trouble getting protein in my diet).
I heard from a colleague that she read in SHAPE magazine that if you're trying to loose weight you should NOT eat Greek yogurt - but regular instead.
Can't find the article - but could this be true? And if so...why?
Greek yoghurt, being a rather thicker and creamier article than regular plain yoghurt, is just more calorific per 100g, that's all. So, like anything else, if you watch the portions and keep track of the calories it's fine as part of your calorie-controlled, weight-loss diet. Any article saying you should 'NOT' eat it sounds a bit hysterical to be honest.... Magazines, eh?
xD
Nonfat Greek yogurt only has about 10 extra calories per cup. On the other hand, it has half the sugar and twice the protein. I guess it's your call. Hahah.
Magazines are usually so stupid about things like that.
It's Shape. That overblown misrepresentation of rather pedestrian facts in their diet information is pretty mild compared to the wrongness that is their exercise infirmation.
shape is the worst mag... women's health is better but they all have misinformation I think.
Yeah, don't listen to magazines. They also probably endorse the special K diet, which is bogus!
And I like Greek yogurt better even with the extra calories because it feels more like real food. It's not too liquidy like a lot of the regular ones. So if you want to save the calories per ounce, eat regular. But Greek seems more substantial I think.
it's lower in calcium than regular yogurt- I take supplements anyway and would never give up my greek!
Maybe it's because they assume people will add honey/sugar to it?
I think Fage Greek Yogurt is the best on the market. All other yogurts are much higher in sugar, and from what I've checked, more calories.
If you get the 170 gram size, (Total 0%) has 90 calories and 15 grams of protein. The thick texture also makes my stomach feel more full.
It tastes great with a 0 calorie sugar alternative like Splenda, or Stevia (found at Trader Joe's, made from a plant/thus all natural/even vegan certified, many health benefits unlike the previous, used frequently in Japan and South America).
the greek gods no fat plain yogurt only has 60 cal. for 6 oz. i eat it every morning and thats waaay lower then most yogurts you can find on the market. plus its really good.
I am with all you Greek lovers here!
I guess its the calorie angle that has Shape magazine dissing it?
But extra calories from protein or fiber never bother me, I feel much more satisfied from a greek yogurt versus a dannon light n fit or light yoplait, and its also much more versatile to use!
