green tea and caffeine?

Quote  |  Reply

My question is very simple: Is there caffeine in green tea? If so, is there as much as coffee?

Thanks.

i read that green tea contains about 1/3 of the caffeine of coffee. however i think that i read this on wikipedia so it's possibly not entirely reliable :|

Yes, there is caffeine in green tea. I couldn't say how much though.

To get rid of most of the caffeine you can fill your cup up with boiled water (with the tea bag in), EMPTY out this first cup, then fill up your cup again with the tea bag in. This gets rid of most of the caffeine but you still get the taste and benefits of the tea itself.

White tea has less caffeine than green tea but also has the same benefits.

there is caffeine in green tea but not as much as in coffee. 1/3 sounds about right tho. but insted of wasting a good cup of tea just dont let the leafs stay in for a long time. the ligher the color of the tea the less caffeine. you can also get caffeine free green tea, its not that hard to find.

yes.  how much (compared to coffee) depends on the tea (and on the coffee).

if you're looking for the antioxidant and metabolism benefits of green tea, stay away from the processed kinds.  you want loose leaf tea, as fresh as possible.  you won't get those benefits from anything that comes in a teabag or a jar, and certainly not from decaffeinated tea.

yup green tea has caffeine in it....depending on the kind (I think Lipton has almost as much as a cup of coffee) as well as the length of time the leaves brew in hot water determine the amount of caffeine you get in your drink.

Overall its a lil lower than coffee in general, but everything has caffeine, including decaf coffee.

You can use tea bags of green tea up to 5x so 'wasting' one cup shouldn't matter.

I was at a tea shop a couple days ago looking for decaf stocking stuffers. A nice guy that worked there mentioned that if you steep green tea for only around 1 minute, the majority of the caffeine will not have been released. If you steep it for the recommended 3-5 minutes, however, then all of the caffeine is released.
