Speeds up your metabolism.
Not sure how much you should drink, but I drink 3-4 cups a day.
This may help

It's really an unproven claim as far as it speeding up your metabolism, it obviously contains antioxidants and caffeine like coffee, so if you drink several glasses a day you'll have some more energy. There are 30-60 mg of caffeine in a cup of green tea, versus about 100 mg in a cup of coffee. I drink it every day, 2-3 glasses but it's mainly for the antioxidants, I don't really get a jolt from it like some people do.
I did a several hour research hunt for something reliable about green tea and most places I found said it takes about 6 cups to get the best weight loss benefit but that drinking more than that would not increase the effect.  Also if you are using te supplements becareful with them since they sometimes can contain over 50 times the power of a regular cup.
What about decaf green tea?  is it as healthy? or does the 'decaff'ing' process strip down some of the antioxidants?
you need to drink 6 cups!!!!? I don't think i could, just had 3 today, and it is really too much, i don't feel good at all, i get all jittery and my stomach feels upset. (this has happened before when i've drunk too much of it) I think the most i can cope with is maybe 1-2. I'd be interested to know about the de-caf thing too, maybe i could handle it like that.
#1 schmee5 (Edit) Aug 07 2007 13:21 I've read many studies online that indicate that it will speed up the metabolism. However, most claim that it is because of the EGCG content. I have heard that you need a certain amount of EGCG before it is actually effective.

I LOVE green tea and I drink it because I love herbals teas and because it does just give me an overall feeling of "wellness." I think it sparks my energy a bit more, as well, which encourages me to be more active. I have not noticed any increase in weight loss by drinking green tea alone (and I have drank a lot of it in the past- and also drank a lot of Oolong and mint teas), but I do think that there is potential for it to have a boosting effect.
(moved response from a similar themed thread to this one since it has more responses already.)
Thanks!

Today I hada huge cup of green tea 1/4 tsp sugar, woke me right up LOL. which has NEVER happened before. Maybe coz I wasn't using sugar, but an artificial sweetener? Dunno; but now I feel great LOL.
Gotta love green tea =]
