Green tea makes me feel sick

Quote  |  Reply
Has anyone ever experienced this?  When I drink it I get nauseated about 20 min later.  I really want to keep drinking it for the health benefits but ughhhh.... I feel yucky.  Any ideas about how to stop this?

I started drinking green tea (hot water w/ tea bag) 2x a day at work for the caffeine + flavonoids.  I was always fine until today.  I had 1 cup when I got to work on an empty stomach.  Not good.  I felt nausea build up and up for about 80 minutes until I could not fight it anymore and I had to throw up the green tea.  Now I don't feel like I can drink green tea anymore. :(
I feel the nausea coming on even when I start to drink it.  It's never bad enough that I really will throw up, it just makes me uncomfortable and causes me to eat my 10 snack early....and usually something dry like graham crackers. If white tea is just as good, maybe I'll try that?  Right now I have Lipton Decaf Green Tea because that's all they had in the store.  I added some splenda but still not so great.

I don't want to force myself to have things that I don't like, but if I know something's healthy, shouldn't I push myself a bit? It's like, even when I don't feel like exercising, I know it's good for me, so I still make an effort to do it.

For those who have tried other flavours, which do you like?  I saw some premium brand that was really expensive, but maybe it's worth it?

Not only do I get nauseous, but I also start sneezing. I drank a cup this morning - post breakfast - and I put two tea bags in it. Maybe that overdid it? I'm definitely going to try the Tazo Berry Blossom White Tea that everyone is suggesting! Thanks!

Yechhh... I can't even drink it with real sugar or honey in it.  I just take the pills.  Probably not as effective, but man I hate that taste.

Well, you're not the only one experiencing this. I like green tea, but i also feel strange after drinking it. The first time i tried it - it  felt as if something in my body moved, as if my system took a nose-dive. I'm not sure about this but I believe there are vitamins that are being depleted when drinking green tea. I say this because after drinking it just the first time, i felt weak after working out. I have stopped drinking it all together. Black tea is better at least for me i dont feel my energy is gone after a work out.

That's weird, this is the first discussion I've heard about it and yet it happens to me too.  For me it's the odd taste.  I just don't like it and won't drink it.

Antioxidants are in so many things, I don't see the point in looking to any "one special item" to get them.  Anyhow, I just bought Morning Thunder (Black tea and Mate) and that's just fine for me.

Same here, very sick feeling. Just recently..just started drinking it again to fight Candida infection. It may be it's killing the Candida off which is why I feel sick. It will prob ease in time. It goes after about 10 mins.
If it is killing of bad things in my body then in-time the feeling should ease.
I drink it plain (no suger) and strong, and yes it taste gross! I have one-a-day for medical purposes. I drink Twinings Oragic Green Tea.

Only sometimes. Try drinking a full glass of normal water first-- generally I find that if I'm dehydrated, the tea will make me even more so and then will make me feel nauseous. But it certainly doesn't happen all the time.

Drinking weaker versions of green tea/black tea (I have the same problem with both) in the mornings is also a good idea. Make sure you get enough fluids in you first!

Also, green and white teas are very high in antioxidants (like fruit), which also can cause stomach upsets as they get rid of toxins in your body. The same thing can happen if you have a lot of fruit in the morning, especially with tea, and nothing else-- no grains, etc. Great if your detoxing, not so great if your trying to sit through school or a job and have knots in your stomach.

White tea is usually more gentle on your stomach also.

My personal favorites (rarely if ever give me stomach upsets):

Black Tea: Mighty Leaf Organic Breakfast. It is TO DIE FOR.

Green Tea: Whole Foods 365 is a good, cheap tea.

Yogi Active Body-- great fruity tea.

Trader Joe's Green Tea with Jasmine-- wonderful! BUT they're normal organic green sometimes gets bitter or ashy tasting. Not the Jasmine, just the normal. Be careful which one you get.

White Tea: The Tea Spot's "Meditative Mind." Great tea, kind of pricey, fun tin. Delicious. Could drink it every day.

Herbal:

My personal favorite is home-grown mint. Its great, and super simple (and yeilds a lot!) to grow yourself.

Zhenas Chocolate Chai. Its just good.

Ohh..will try have some cerial first with water and some Green tea. As long as it's de-toxin' me I don't mind. It's also a light source of caffine - great if you sensetive to caffine like me but can't live without a lil bit :D

All the best!

BTW Lemon flavour is nice :P

I get nauseous and sneezy too.  My first cup of the day on an empty stomach is what does it.  I just eat a little yogurt or a banana and I'm better.  My guess it that tea stimulates the liver and it's the crap coming out of the liver that is making us nauseous.  Eat some food to absorb and eliminate the crap.

Yes, green tea can make you sick.  I have personal experience...I did some research and discovered that 'not sure why, but green tea can make you sick to your stomach.'  A suggested was made to switch to white tea.  The best way to stop I think, is to switch from green tea to white tea.  I was violently ill all night from drinking green tea--It just means green tea is not for everyone and an alternative "antioxidant" tea will due just fine.  Good Luck!  But trust me, you are not alone.
