green water

Quote  |  Reply

I have two freshwater tanks and the larger one (29 gallons) develops green algae water every time I change/add water.  The smaller one (10 gallons) sits right beside the bigger one and doesn't get the greenies.  I've tried chemical algae killers, but they are very hard on the fish.   I've got fantail goldfish in both tanks and plecos who do a pretty good job on the algae on the glass, but can't do anything for the algae in thewater. Any suggestions?

hi debroah!  thanks for joining.

sorry it took so long to reply.  i hadn't checked on this group because no one was joining...  Embarassed

i have a friend that works at our local aquarium.  he handles things such as the water treatments and green water.  if you give me a few days, i'll call him and have him e-mail of things that you can try.  then i will post them in here  :D

whatever you do.... don't get snails! lol  i had to learn the hard way.... it took MONTHS to figure out HOW and WHY they kept coming back.  in fact, i JUST posted about it in the 'fresh-water' part of this group.

I found a cure.  There's a product called AlGone that's just amazing.  It takes about  two weeks to work, but the green water is history.  The tanks are crystal clear.  It's an organic product too, and it's not bad for the fish or plants.  Yipee, I can see my fish again.

That's GREAT, i think i'll look into that!

that's the entire reason i bought the snails in the first place.  originally, i wanted a bottom feeder.... the the snails were SOOOO cute!  they were sticking to the glass and you could see their tiny little mouths eating away at the algae.  i was SOLD!   ....then screwed! lol

i think i'll get the bottom feeder, NEXT time if i ever need it.  but first, i'm gonna try the AlGone.  where did you get it?  i'll check wal*mart later on today.

thanks again  :)
