Just a quick question - I have been eating quite a bit of pork lately and just wondered if it is good for you or not? It seems pretty lean and I'm leaving the fatty bit at the side; how does it compare to skinless chicken breast for example? Thank you!
Reason: Moved from Weight Gain to Foods forum
Now pork does have a higher fat content then boneless, skinless chicken breast (even if you cut the obvious visible fat off), but that doesn't make it 'bad'. Now if you ate purely pork and nothing else, THAT would be bad. There are only bad diets, not bad foods. So as long as you balance everything out by getting adequate veggies, fruit, grains, etc, I see no problem! :)
I often have pork tenderloin. I really like pork and the tenderloin is virtually fat free and low calorie. I always cook it in a crock pot with some teriyaki marinade or barbeque sauce. Only 122 calories for three ounces plus whatever marinade or sauce you put on it. Can't get much lower than that. And, I get three or four meals out of one tenderloin. Just a suggestion. ![]()
I loveeeeee jerk pork tenderloin. I usually cook it in a crockpot with some pineapple juice, crushed pineapple, mandarin oranges and jerk seasoning (cinnamon, nutmeg, garlic, cayenne pepper, crushed pepper flakes, and allspice.)
i tend to serve this with some brown rice cooked with pineapple/mandarin oranges and broccoli. So good!
Did you know that pork fat is nearly 50% unsaturated?.... If you eat a variety of different foods (meat included) you're getting a full range of nuritional benefits. People who stick narrowly to things like poultry tend to miss out.
Calorie-wise per 100g lean grilled pork loin chop is about 210 cals. Skinless grilled chicken breast is about 165 cals per 100g. So there's not really a lot in it....
Red meat gets a bad press but if you alternate it with other foods, don't eat it too often, choose lean cuts and keep the portion-size small it's a good choice.
Definitely going to try the jerk pork tenderloin you described. I'm not familiar with jerk seasoning, but it sounds delicious!!
Thanks erveryone!
Robin- I once bought the Cajun Seasoning by McCormicks' and it is similar to the homemade "jerk seasoning" but I stopped using it and made my own since there was added sodium to it- 1/2 tsp for 280mg of sodium? oy.
I left out some ingredients on my "jerk seasoning"- garlic powder (minced or fresh will work just fine), bit of ground red pepper for more spiciness.
I hope you enjoy it!
Oh, I just know I'll enjoy it, Amandief. Am very anxious to try it!! Thanks so much. Always looking for new ways to prepare pork tenderloin.
I feel soooo much better now, I had pork last night- w/ zuchinni-- and thought for sure it was going to be really bad and it was oh sooo good, chicken gets a little old after a while, nothing like pork on the grill! I'll be sure not to make a habit out of it though
I also had mine jerked!
amandief and/or robin9395: how long do you cook the pork in Crockpot? That sounds like something that I want to try.![]()
Hi, mischiefdm. Kind of depends on the size of the tenderloin. Last time, I did two of them at once and let them cook for about an hour on high, then six hours on low. If you do it on high, about four-five hours. I just sort of make it a habit to check after the first four hours, and then every hour after that. Don't know how often you use a crockpot, misch, but you don't have to be real exact about it. I've let them cook for eight hours on low sometimes. I'll tell you, the tenderloin practically falls apart when you run a fork through it to shred it. I hope you try it, and I hope you enjoy it!!
I bought some Lawry's jerk marinade today and plan on trying it soon.
Thanks Robin, I just wanted a ballpark time and plan to try it out.![]()
