I've wanted to try grits for a while now, and I plan too ass oon as my dorm has them again.  But I've no idea what they actually taste like.  Can anyone describe it and what's good to put in it (if it needs it at all)?

I love them. I put splenda or stevia in them (or any type of sugar) and a tiny bit of butter. You can add fruit to it too.

Grits taste like whatever you put in them. Some people put salty things in them, others put sweet things in them. I like em!

well the taste will be different when you flavor it hun , personally ive never had them plain but maybe once in my life so cant tell ya from that but i love them wth butter ( i know lol calories - maybe a molly mcbutter ?? ) , bacon bits , cheese things of that nature - you can get the instant ones that are already flavored theyre pretty good too although i dont know what the count on anything is . so yeah ... i love em and could probably live off of them lol . i dont think the one time itried them plain was awful , it was just plain and i like taste ya know what i mean ? hope this helps some

Thanks so much both of you. I was mainly just curious if it'd be good to replace my sweetened oatmeal and cream of wheat. i like sweet, mushy things, and apparently sweet grits work too.

Yeah, they pretty much taste like nothing, but that's a good thing!  I get a lot of looks from this one, but I always put a spoonful of peanut butter in mine, and am not the least bit hungry til lunchtime.

OH GOD NO!  I tried the sme thing...I adore oatmeal & cream of wheat so I bought some grits to try and found they are NOT at all comparable to oatmeal & cream of wheat.  See here

Grits are grand! I enjoy grits, make sure they have been cooked till soft consistency. You can add cheese, I like sharp cheddar, or motzarrella. and then I add sugar/splenda to taste. I also add margarine/diet margarine/ or butter. I have even put catchup/ketup with all of the above. A sunny side egg mixed in, is also good if you like the yellow of the egg. It is runny and the yellow mixes with the grits..and then I get some on my toast. Fantastic. You can also add a bit of creme, milk...(real milk or lat least 2 %... a touch of this and some spenday/sugar- like you do with oatmeal. Some people mix them with bacon/ham and with gravy, again you can add separate or together. Red eye gravy is wonderful with country ham and grits. In the low country of SC...Charleston...they serve grits with shrimp. It is great...and I love them with salmon on the side or mixed in. Just grits with plenty of margarine is so good.. or just adding salt. Red eye gravy is made from bacon grease that is left from the bacon or hame. heat it up...add some hot coffee...It is amazingwith grits too! Doesn't sound good, but it is wonderful! Not a diet food with lots of the fatty ingredients, but cn be made healthy choice.

I really like to add cheese and a dash of hot sauce. You can go the sugar and butter route if you like. Grits are made from corn meal and have little flavor on their own. Instant grits will be a little more "gritty" but regular grits cooked for 20-30 min will be nice and creamy. The texture is different than oatmeal of course. I had cream of wheat once maybe when I was a kid but I don't remember it.

Edit:  P.S.  Shrimp and Grits is awesome.  One of my fav. dishes.

I make my jalapeno cheese grits and they are a hit. Use the hot velveeta cheese and some garlic powder.

I am from the south so I love grits. One thing you may try is mixing in tomatoes with them. We grew a lot a tomatoes on our farm. You can use canned or fresh. I used to get them from Hardey's and a slice of tomato and mix it in.

To me grits are better if they are thicker. I like to ad a little salt and pepper and a tad of butter. For a really fast morning meal that contains alot of fiber which is very good for you, all you have to do is buy a box of plain grits in any grocery store. The box contains (I think) six small packets. Bring a cup of water to a boil in the microwave and then ad the grits to the thickness you like, ad salt, pepper, butter and you are GOOD TO GO.   lol   enjoy

I'm from North carolina and thats how we do it. Smile

i like nutritional yeast in mine. it's kinda like a vegan parmesan cheese substitute but it's often in flakes, and tastes like nutty salty sharp cheddar. mmm (:
