Cinnamon and Butter Buds is pretty good =)
Salt and pepper, and maybe butter if you want it. That's how I always eat it, I've never actually had it with sugar. Are you from the north?
Connecticut.. =)
Thanks for the suggestions, ill try them

Haha, I figured. Sweet grits is more of a north thing, I live in South Carolina and we it it savory (sweet is unheard of). Where I work they make loaded grits with sausage, sauteed (sp?) onions and peppers, cheese, and butter. It smells wonderful but it's probably not good for the health-conscious.
Every now and then I like a slice of cheddar cheese on my plate underneath my grits.
And of course, bacon or sausage crumbled up in grits is good.

i am from georgia and sweet grits is more common there than salted, cheese, or other types of grits. but we do like the eat grits with friied catfish. very good. so if you done want sweet grits, i would say add some cheese to them, that is pretty good. i also have been none to put some apple butter jelly in may which is really good. i love apple butter!! that is a very southern thing where i come from!! small town in GA!
I've never had sweetened grits. I like mine with salt & pepper and just a little shredded reduced fat cheese. I prefer the old fashioned, slow cooking grits because they have more flavor and texture.
I've never had grits before, what are they anyway? Is it like cream of wheat (a hot cereal)?
not like cream of wheat.
It's a hot cereal made from corn, with a unique texture. It's grainer than cream of wheat and the taste is totally different.
hmmm...interesting. I have always eaten mine sweet, notherner of course, and can't imagine putting salt & pepper on them...especially for breakfast, ewww. Guess I shouldn't knock it till i try it huh. Well, I eat mine with smuckers sugar-free strawberry jam. Have always mixed some sort of preserves or jelly in them, but now use Sugar-free bc only 10 calories! Btw, cheese can make just about anything taste good...but I try to minimize the amount I eat daily (get my calcium by skim milk)
I like my grits (not the instant kind) with some butter and brownsugar. Not very healthy that way I'm sure. I have a friend that puts cheese in hers, I haven't tried that yet but as someone else said cheese makes anything taste good.
For those of you from the south, what is a good brand of grits? My kid loves them (my ex-in-laws are from N.C.). I want to buy him some since I will be visiting him soon. I never ate them, but I think they fix them with salt & pepper and cheese. Any recommendations?
Sweet grits? Ick. Butter, salt and pepper are the basic flavor. Upgrade them with cheese. Upgrade them further with shrimp. Salsa might be good, hmm, will have to try that sometime.
If you want to sugar something, eat oatmeal or cream of wheat.

no toppings neccessary, cook them in chicken broth instead of water and use salt and pepper. Instant grits are just nasty.
Akgal, Jim Dandy is a good brand.
Grits are a great flavor absorber. They can be used with any dish and are great with shrimp as well. I cook mine with Tuna and a can of cream of mushroom soup.... Add some feta if you like cheese as it is lower in fat and calorie.
tim65 - love the chicken broth idea and will try it with my next tuna dish.

I'm from boston and I like my grits sweet! I think I treat them more like oatmeal because I can't imagine something with that consistency as savory for breakfast. It makes my stomach queasy just thinking about them with butter and meat!
my thoughts exactly nini! A salty buttery breakfast doesnt really appeal to me, give me sweet! =)
Must be a Northern..new england..type of deal. I LOVE boston! sorry - lil off topic =)

Get regular quick grits, they taste much better and they don't take much longer to cook..
Quaker is fine
Pepper, salt, margarine and a little bit of shredded cheese
Southerners unite! LOL

All I can get here is Quaker grits. The regular, not instant or quick, is hard to find. I'm satisfied with them though. I do a single bowl in the microwave, 5 mins on high, then stir and 2 mins on high, and they are cooked to perfection.
Tabasco, esp. if eating w/Fish.
