What grocery item shocked you when you purchased it since the gas prices has increased?
I went to the store today and purchased 2 cans of Brooks Can Hot Chili Beans and 2 lbs of Lean ground Round and spent 15.00$. Can you believe that?
What was your grocery bill? What item(S) shocked you that increased so high since the gasoline surge? And what Part of the Country do you live in?
I live in Ohio, USA.
Take care and God Bless.
P.S. I walked out of the store with a lady that was looking at her receipt all the way out to her car. I asked her if she was shocked with her bill? She said yeah, doesn't seem like I got that much and I normally spend a lot less. I am just checking to see if they overcharged me. (THINK AGAIN)
Here in Florida, milk, eggs and most produce has gone way up. I can empathize with the woman that looked at her receipt all the way out to the car. I did that today although I had a few large-dollar items (I went to Sam's) but it still was receipt shock for me.
PASTA!!! It used to be $0.88 for a small bag or macaroni, its now $2.27!!!
I live in Toronto, Ontario!!!
eggs & veggies have been KILLING me.
We have a discount grocery here (Aldi's)- where you bag your own groceries. Milk is 2.59. Bread 1.29 and eggs .90 cents. The regular store Milk is 3.19. Bread is 2.78 and Eggs are 2.49 for only ONE dozen.
SHeesh . . . and the big killer for us is Orange juice. A gallon is 4.79 and that is for the generic!
We all need to hang in there and share shopping experiences. Maybe someone will have a good tip to help others out.
Take care and God Bless.
90 cents for a dozen eggs? WOW, sign me up.
The cheapest around here are at this little family-owned produce place & they're 1.60 for a dozen. & it's super inconvenient to get to.
ugh, I just hate the chain reaction. As if us having to pay more for gas isn't bad enough, now we need to pay more to compensate for other people's gas.
a loaf of bread here £1.40 ish in $ its around double
My biggest surprise is flour and sugar. You used to be able to get them for less than a buck a bag, each. Hell, Aldi used to sell them for sixty-nine cents each. Now they're upwards three dollars fo absolute generic in the cheapest store you can think of.
It's not just the gas prices going up (which is also caused by the value of the dollar going down), but also inflation affecting the price of food. But really, what else can you expect when the federal reserve is printing money out of thin air non stop to devalue the dollar so the national debt is easier to pay off.
cold ham!.....I buy the same one all the time and in just a week it's gone up 6p, I put it back on the shelf and opted for a cheaper one, I refuse to pay over inflated prices for everything.
What about buying the frozen concentrates that you mix with water? I'm not sure how they taste but I know they're usually like 99cents.

Also in FL. I was gong to say milk. Seems like it always costs about the same as the diesel I put in my car. Which is to say, freaking ridiculous!
That is a good idea, but I normally stay away from that part of the grocery because of too many processed foods that I am afraid I will be tempted to purchase. Oh, yeah and the ice cream.
I'll have to consider that-Good idea (concentrate oj)
Take care all and have a good day. God Bless.
*SIGH*
I have also noticed that everything I buy seems to cost more - I don't know if it is a Midwestern thing - in Chicago - but I intend to start doing some shopping at the brand new Aldi's up the street... between there and Sam's maybe I can cut out a whole lot of the food inflation....
I remember milk, bread, and cheese being quite a bit less from the last time I went shopping. I remember paying only about a buck for canteloupes last summer, and now they're about $2.20, even at a discount place like Aldi.
And I've noticed that some things have stayed right about the same price, but the amount is smaller (ie: qty of 5 bars instead of 6).
eggs- can't find them for less than 2.30 or so per dozen on a good day (edit: ok they were on sale for 1.80 today, so there's some good news)
soymilk- up to 2.50 for store brand, up to 2.90 for name brand
some vegetables- onions (big crop failure last year), potato, peppers, squashes
some grains- rice is up at least 20-30 cents per bag
I live in the south
Distilled water... I used to get 3 gallons for $1.69 and now it's $2.09... just in the past 3 weeks!
The price of milk has been the most shocking thing to me... down here in Dallas, TX.
heh, I paid $5.50 for a dozen eggs on Saturday. I choose to buy free range eggs from the farmer's market though, but they are still $6.49 for 24 at the cheapest (Costco).
Maple syrup has me a bit boggled, in 3 months it's gone from $9.99 to $13.49. Chicken has increased in price by about $3 a kg too so we're looking for vegetarian alternatives a lot. Even the dogs have been switched to beef.
