Grocery Store Question: Prepared Dinner Options?
Hey there!~
Tonight I'm going to my boyfriend's house and I wanted to stop by the local Safeway to grab something for dinner for myself. The issue is that the only thing that currently works at my boyfriend's house is his microwave because the oven/stove is broken.
So I'm looking for either an already prepared dinner or maybe a healthy frozen dish that i could microwave. I'm having salad for lunch today so I think the salad bar of the grocery store isn't really an option. So basically I'm looking for a suggestion of something quick and healthy from the grocery store that perhaps is high in protein and fiber. Any ideas??
Well this is what I had last night:
1/2 can of Eating Right Turkey Chili (heat up) and pour over baked (microwaved potato) and you can top it with a spoon of sour cream.
I think the nutrition for 1/2 can was 240 calories, 19 grams protein and around 7 grams of fiber.
And theres always lean cuisines, healthy choice, amy's, etc frozen meals. When I eat a frozen meal I usually try and pair it with atleast 1 serving of vegetables and/or fruit and drink extra water.
Invest in 2 large baking potatoes & something interesting to put on the top.... prawns, beans, cheese, salsa....... Nuke the spuds and serve with topping. Very quick, rather cheaper and probably healthier than most frozen meals
You can buy frozen packets of fish fillets or even chicken that can be cooked in the microwave. Just check your freezer aisle... I like to cook salmon with a few seasonings, since I can buy individual packets at my grocery store. Pair it with one of those Steamfresh baggies of frozen vegetables and it can make a decent meal in a pinch.
Safeway sells this brand called Eating Right (in Canada anyway). Their Italian chicken vegetable lasagna is SO good. It's not exactly an individual dinner though... oh and I just realized you need to bake it in the oven, though there might be a toaster oven option.
you could pick up one of those roasterrie chickens and eat only the white meat and no skin, with a whole grain bread roll & veggies on the side.
i know there are many (many!) better options, and i much prefer to cook, but in a pinch i sometimes have a stouffer's lasagne. not low-cal, low-fat thing, the real one. it's 340 calories and high in sodium (900mg), but it's more satisfying than anything else i've had out of the freezer. high in carbs, but high in protein, too. most of the ingredients are identifiable. with a salad, it's something i don't feel terrible about.
You guys have some great ideas! I just realized I have about 300 calories left for dinner....I kinda got REALLY hungry at lunch and had extra chicken on my salad and some candycorn that the deli gave me, gotta love halloween lol Anyways with 300 calories left maybe I could do like a frozen dinner and a side salad...hmmm maybe I'll wonder around the grocery store for awhile adding things in my head like i always do haha
I like the Bertoli frozen pasta dishes. You just empty the bag of separately frozen ingredients into a large saute pan, put on the lid and forget it for 10 minutes. If you choose one with a lot of vegetables they are not bad caloriewise.
Quick question. How long has he been without a stove/oven? When is it being replaced?
Give the gift of an electric frying pan (skillet), electric griddle, or George Forman grill. At least then the options are pretty endless.
Yea I was thinking about letting him have my George Forman grill for awhile until it gets fixed, but I dont know how much he will use it, that boy can live off of Ravioli and Beefaroni from Chef Boyardee in ther microwave and not gain an ounce lol so unhealthy, I try to sneak veggies in his meals when he's not looking
Anyways I ended up hitting up the salad bar to make a salad of lettuce, shredded carrots, red&green peppers and then also bought a package of Lightlife Smart Tex-Mex which was a vegetarian taco meat type thing that is 150 calories and 18 grams of protein. So I heated it up and poured it over the salad to make like a taco salad for only about 200 calories :)
