GROUP-- conquering and overcoming fear foods-new challenge each week :)
For all of us with fears of certain foods...this thread is for you. I noticed that people were posting their fear foods to a thread but not doing anything about it. To get on the road to recovery we have to overcome these fears by actually eating the very foods that we have deemed "forbidden"...a few of mine are...
milk
whole eggs
pastries
butter
candy bars
real bread
whole bagels
fruit juice
smoothies
milkshakes
sugar
cream of any sort
hummus
the list goes on and on....so each week we should have a challenge where you combat a food phobia. We'll list 5 foods each week and you choose 3 of the 5 to eat at some point during that week...hopefully, by the end of a few weeks we'll have conquered many of our fear foods and be able to eat them more regularly. some will appear more than once since they might be more common than others. So...for this week here are some choices...based on what I've been reading.
1. butter...at least 1 tbsp spread on something...no butter sprays or skimping..lol
2. regular ice cream or sherbert...not diet ice cream [e.g. healthy choice/skinny cow]...at least 1 serving.. (not so bad...maybe 110-160 calories]
3. 1 slice of regular bread
4. a cup of juice/milk/smoothie
5. 1 tbsp or more of peanut butter
If anyone has any suggestions feel free to comment. This is meant to be uplifting...so please no attacks or put downs :)
great thred! (:
im gonna try milk (we only have skim though!)
whole eggs
peanut butter
ill let you know if i have any (:
i dont think illl eevveerrr have butter again
Hey, great idea for a thread!
I just want to make an important point: I am a clean eater and I do not think that people should HAVE to eat additives and artificial chemicals and etc from processed ice creams and etc…
Instead of ice cream, pure cream is the same thing only without artificial stuff.
I am suggesting this because when I was recovering and facing fear foods, I managed to tackle my fear foods without having to have ice cream or “ specific” junk foods.
If ice cream is some ones fear food then go ahead and face the fear though, by all means!
But I am just saying that people should not necessarily have to consume “ ice cream” and certain processed treats to be normal or etc.
sheesh...the point of this thread is overcoming fear foods, empowering, positive...if you don't want to eat ice cream then don't. if you never want to eat it again, and never enjoyed it before then that's your own perspective. my point is not to force people to eat processed foods but simply eat sensibly in regards to foods they would previously deem off limits, not because they don't like them but because they aren't "safe". however you choose to implement the plan is up to you, i just want to encourage people in their recovery by conquering those foods. :)
i know you mean well chrissy i really like youre idea :)
id join in but i dont really have 'fear foods'...im willing to eat anything if i cat fit it in, thats my problem, being to exact + having to know the exact count of things :/
^ same here. There's nothing I fear but I just don't have much stuff like mcdonalds because I've been brought up with the mentality not to eat lots of junk.
Hmmm...come to think of it, stuff like cake bars I'm not good with so will aim for one of those and gonna try and make a milk based smoothie too :)
chrissy and ashley good luck I'm sure you will learn to enjoy your fear foods again - just think, it's food, it's meant to make you happy not scared!
xjennie: i'd love to know how the cake bars taste and whether or not you enjoy it more than you could even anticipate!!
So, for fear foods for me...i had peanut butter and bread...a pb and j...it made me itchy inside because i'm mildly allergic so i don't think i'll be doing it very often...lol that was yesterday.
today i went out for ice cream...my fav ice cream place and didn't freak when i ordered larger than a pint and 1/2 of it was regular...so that's pretty good!! yay!! i'm a bit freaked though and tempted to compensate by decreasing my dinner but i'm going to be strong :)
for the most part i have conquered most of my fear foods....pb, nuts, milk, cheese, salad dressing, desserts, etc. However there are some things i need to work at which are more fear actions...i still am a little uncomfortable eating out when i cannot go look at the nutrition facts. I have yet to eat at a place where i cannot check bfore or after i eat there...like tonight when i went to ihop...i had ordered something that they had nutrition facts on... =[
also i dont know if this is do to ed but i no longer enjoy chips, many desserts, chocolate, etc. I mean ive had them but i dont find their taste as yummy as i remember them....i enjoy eating other things more...which tend to be healthier. Do you guys think this is more do to previous fear of these items and i should add to the list of conquering??
and fried foods, especially french fries...i have yet to come over as well as many caloric drinks.....well besides milk and chocolate milk. Anything else i practically refuse to touch.
so my goal for this week will be to enjoy the unknown calories in "junk" tomarrow...friends surprise party so obviously there will be junky foods. and also to actually eat somet of the french fries i get with a meal in the future =]

honestly, i've told myself that i don't like things simply because i'm afraid to eat them so when i do eat them i don't like them because mentally i've already decided that i don't. i think you should try adding some of those things back to your diet...things that you think you'd like and if it turns out that you actually don't like it then don't eat it. it's not about eating unhealthy things but just not allowing those things to be off limits because we fear them. even seemingly unhealthy things are okay in moderation and we need to have control over them and not allow them to have control over us.
you should eat 1/3 or 1/2 of the fries with your meal..share them with someone. just taste them, have power over the food you eat. also, be brave and order something at a hole in the wall restaurant that doesn't have nutrition facts. maybe make it something small to begin with, like breakfast instead of dinner. have their homemade danishes or pastry of sorts with a coffee. you'll see that nothing bad happens and you'll be okay. good job though on conquering many of those fear foods already. have you completely overcome them? like will you hesitate to eat peanut butter or are you COMPLETELY OVER IT?
i love this idea. today i accidentally challenged myself when i ordered the wrong kind of muffin, but ate it anyway knowing it was 400 calories. for a SNACK.
- avocado.
- tempura sushi rolls.
- peanut sauce.
- 2 slices of normal bread on a sandwich, not 1.
- anything i don't know the content of!
Chrissy - this is a fantastic thread and I am sorry if I came across as discouraging !
I was just questioning the concept of junk food = normal because I know a lot of people who eat “ clean” and are very normal with food too!
The mentality of I see a lot of is that people recovering think that to be “ normal” they need to eat “ junk food”. I just wanted to stress that you can be “ normal” without having to eat processed things.
During recovering, however, I DO think it is more important to focus on gaining weight and re - introducing old favorites BEFORE you focus on HOW you feel is a healthy way to eat.

congrats!! that's so great with the muffin!! what kind was it? where from? was it yummy? did you eat it all or just part of it since it was the wrong one? i think tomorrow i will go to a new restaurant and order something completely foreign to my palate...maybe. i have to build up the courage.

it was a whole grain raspberry muffin from tim horton's, and it was delicious!!! my dad mixed up my order which is usually their low-fat cranberry muffin (which is vegan). there was some anxiety because i normally try to stick away from all animal products, but rather than make my dad upset and be wasteful i dug in.
also i am going to trader joe's tomorrow and stocking up on scary and exciting and yummy wholesome foods :)

ooooh yeah french fries damn them! I thnk an ED makes you far more wary of foods so in recovary we are all a lot more knowledgable. I'm fine with fries if they come with say just a burger and salad because that to me is a balanced meal but if the burger in a bun then I've got this silly thing about not wanting 2 sources of carbohydrate. Anyone else like this?
Then again, I guess it's quite a healthy outlook from a nutritionalists point of view!
This is a fantastic thread! Its so difficult to try new fear foods but its really encouraging and motivating to do it when I see others trying so hard .
Ok so I have quite a list of fear foods my diet ended up being pretty limited but I really want to branch out and just get back to eating normally and being normal.
Heres some:
White bread + other non wholemeal varieties
White rice/pasta
Chips (meaning fries)
Crisps
Fatty Fish such as salmon/sardines etc
Oils
Butter
Red meat
Desserts
Biscuits
Crisps
Cheese
Liquid Calories
Anyway Im going to challenge myself this week to try:
1.) Liquid Calories in a good volume 2.) Red Meat 3.) Oil- maybe try frying some chicken in it.
Ohh and yes Im the same, I can get a bit funny about having different carbs in the one meal. Then again quite often I eat porridge and toast for breakfast which is more than one type of carb in the one go, so I suppose it really depends on what Im eating. If it came down to a burger though, Id find it though to eat something carby like fries as well.

omonica...you should get some of their red pepper hummus with regular pita bread...also some of their soy ice cream...it's deelish!! oh, and the roasted vegetable pizza that's cheeseless is wonderful!! i'm going shopping today too so it should be fun. one more thing, get their veggie crisps/chips they have one's shaped like fries and ones shaped like ruffles...they are all different colors and they are really quite good. if chips are one of your fear foods these are a step to conquering that fear!!
BETTY1302--yay!! i'm glad you've decided to join us. i don't blame you with the white rice and white bread. i don't eat that stuff either but i think it has more to do with health than the ED because calorie wise they are usually the same but i'd prefer the whole grains. i am the same with limiting myself to one carb per meal as well. maybe i should really get over that. i was making myself veggie burgers, with bread, and ketchup and stuff like a regular burger but i didn't want to have fries with it because there were already 2 slices of bread. maybe if i add in a salad it would reduce the anxiety a bit or have a smaller amount of fries and a small salad. balance..that's good right?
So today I remembered my challenge food and along with my grapes, had a nutrigrain raisin cake bar for snack while doing my coursework - was gorgeous, can't believe I've been avoiding these guys!
chrissy, I'm a bit like that too with the salad thing...somehow junkfood becomes less of a no go if it's got a bit of lettuce with it lol
Chrissy that sounds a good idea. Trying new fear foods is really hard so you cant be expected to just jump all in all the time. So maybe just trying a few fries and balancing it out with a little salad is a good first step, then eventually maybe you could just go for it and have a good plate of fries.
Well done Jennie thats great!
So last night I ended up having a Sainsburys be good to yourself spinach and ricotta cannelonni ready meal. That kinda got me my cheese and white pasta fear. The cheese bit was really big, I have such a block against cheese.
I find ready meals are helpful in helping me try new foods, I think its because I can read the packet and know exactly whats in it and how many calories etc. It lets me try things Id be to scared to make myself. Im terrible at juding whats in my meals. Sometimes if my mum makes like a cottage pie for dinner I then just havent a clue how much is on my plate. Does anyone else find this?
I really need to get over my fear of cheese and eggs because I'm missing an entire food group (diary) from my diet at the moment. Oh dear.
Anyway, here's my list!
Eggs
Cheese
Margarine
Sauces
Condiments
Smoothies
Milkshakes
Juices (any liquid calories, really)
Biscuits
Rice
Pizza
Chips
Ice Cream
Oil
Crisps
Some of these things I never want to eat again... but I suppose I have to to beat this thing! You guys are doing really well :) I ate cheese on toast yesterday and going to give it a go again today.
Betty1302...i am the same exact way..i had a lasagna meal the other day...otherwise the cheese would be too much for me...i can eat string cheese because it's prepackaged and more like a snack but i fear cheesy things...kinda silly i guess.
there are many things like pizzas and burritos that i had premade first and now i can eat them more regularly when they are homemade. still kinda afraid of delivery pizza or pizza from a pizza place, so when i want it i have the frozen kind. i also don't like the idea of eating at any restaurant that's not a chain. i figure all the chains have kinda a standard recipe that they have to follow so if i find a safe dish there then i can go to that place no matter what city i'm in but if it's a local restaurant then they cook everything however they wish.
girlplurality..congrats on the cheese toast...did you have it again? what kind of cheese? was it yummy? how did you make it?
Chrissy, I am the same with chain restaurants! Like Nandos is 'safe' because they're the same everywhere.
I had red leicester on rye bread. It was quite nice, I just grilled it... Have not had it again since though.
