Group Strep B Positive
Hey, just got back from my 35 week check up and found out I am group B strep positive. I did my research and it is pretty common and as long as you take antibiotics during labor your baby only has a 1 in 4000 chance of getting it which can cause pnemonia and other complications.
I am just wondering if anyone else has gone through labor and delivery with this and if anyone had a child that was born with this?
I was Group B positive with my first and negative with my second. I was given a sheet to take with me to the hospital that instructed the nurses to start me on antibiotics immediately, which they did. I ultimately had a c-section after reaching 6cm and having my water broken and my daughter was born without contracting the strep (surely because of the c-section).
My sister-in-law just had a "normal" labor and delivery 3 weeks ago and she was positive. Her son is just fine.
My daughter is 11 weeks old and I had the beta strep while I was prego, too.
I had been planning on laboring at home as long as possible because I wanted to avoid an epidural but with the strep they want you to be there to get a few doses of ampicilin before baby comes.
I labored at the hospital for about 10 hours and got three doses of Ampicilin. They gave me an IV and administered the doses four hours apart.
Baby was fine and I delivered with no other interventions.
Awesome! Seriously it makes me feel so much better to know others went through it. I have the note also so they give the antibiotics during labor which I heard is really simple. I want an all natural birth so it is nice knowing I can still deliver vaginally.
Ideally, you'll have three doses of antibiotics administered intravenously so when you think you're in labor, get to the hospital to make sure there's enough time to get them all. Everything will be fine, nothing to worry about :)
I was positive with my daughter, who will be 13 on Friday! I had a c-section though.
Hi there,
I had group B step and gave birth (vaginally) to a baby 18 months ago to a little girl who did not contract the step virus. However - I'll give you a word of warning... I had a horrible experience as a result of the antibiotics they gave me during delivery for the strep B. Apparently, the antibiotics kill off all the bad strep b bacteria, but they can also kill off all the good bacteria in your system, leaving your immune system compromised and making you susceptible to picking up other bugs. This is what happened to me. I felt fine after delivery, but within 2 days of giving birth, I became violently ill with what I can only describe as the WORST stomach pain accompanied by cold chills and diarrhea. (Gross - I know.) I thought it was just my body adjusting to having given birth so I waited a week to see if it would pass. It did not. I went to my primary care Dr. and they ran some tests. Turns out - I picked up a nasty bug while we were in the hospital called "C-diff." It's very commonly contracted in hospitals and nursing homes and it is SUPER hard to get rid of. I had to start taking antibiotics right away, which meant I had to stop breast feeding. :-( Very sad...(When my daughter was finally getting the hang of it!) Anyhow, every time I stopped taking the antibiotics, the C-Diff would come back. It took 3 full months and 4 different types of antibiotics before that darn C-diff went away. It was AWFUL! Here's my advice - be very careful after you've had the antibiotics during delivery. Wash your hands as often as possible while your in the hospital. Insist that all nurses or other staff coming into your room or touching you washes their hands before they touch you. Be very conscious of touching the hospital stuff (bed, sink, toilet, remote control, etc.) and make sure to wash your hands well after everything you touch - especially before you eat or drink or put your hands near your mouth. That may sound alarmist, but I would hate for anyone to be afflicted with that disgusting C-diff that I had. Plus -I learned that those hand sanitizing gels don't kill C-diff. You physically have to wash your hands with soap and hot water to kill it or use bleach on the surfaces such as sinks, toilets, etc.. It was awful, so just be aware of that and make sure you're really good about washing up well while you're in the germ factory, Oh... I mean hospital. :-) I'm sure you'll be fine. Hopefully, what happened to me was a freak thing. :-)
Wow thanks for that warning! I am seeing my doctor next week and will ask him about that so we can make sure to mention that in my birth plan. I so want to breastfeed so anything that can prevent that, especially being sick like that, I will make sure to take to heart! Thank you so much for your expreience, strength, and hope!
I was group B strep + and had a C section.. I was still administered the intravenous antibiotics and everything went just fine :) Good luck!
