Do groups like Overeaters Anonymous help?

Quote  |  Reply

Things are getting really bad so I thought I might get some help. Has anyone ever gone to groups like this and found that it helped them get over over-eating and binge eating? I want to go but it all sounds kind of cultish on their website and I'm scared no one will take me seriously because I'm not obese.

I tried doing it on my own but thus far its proved no good and I've found out that it's a lot harder than I thought. A lot harder. Did it help any of you?

If you go into those groups 100% behind it and ready to devote to it, they work, but if you're a little skeptical that it might be cultish, I don't know if it will work with you. Everyone's different. It wouldn't work for me, but it does help a lot of people.

I have the exact same problem, I'm not obese, I am only JUST in the overweight range. I thought I could work it out myself but I guess it proves to be a lot harder as I am gaining weight again. I just can't stop binging, I try to not feel bad about it, I try to keep myself occupied and while it stops it for a while it always comes back and I can't constantly be occupied. I sometimes do it when i'm hungry and sometimes when I'm not hungry at all. I can't work it out and its stressing me.

Anyway I am heading to an eating disorders support network on Friday, the lady is a counsellor and is going to suggest some things for me, I'm really hoping this works. I can let you know how I get on if you like :)

Any type of support group sounds like a good idea.  They may have information on how to eat that you may not have thought of before.  I recently hired a personal trainer who works with me 2 days a week.  Half of our session is spent reviewing my diet.  He's a pain in the butt!!  lol But, he's helping by keeping me focused and on track.  A support group should offer similar guidance.

My mother is a member of OA (as she calls it) and has found it very helpful for many years.  As long as I can remember she has had issues with food - binges, diets, etc.  I know one of the tools they use is having a sponsor similar to AA.  She talks every morning with someone and she says that really helps her.  What have you got to lose?
