Someone in my weight lifting class said they heard on the radio that there is a gym on the east coast that has a "NO Grunting" Rule and some guy while lifting weights grunted and was kicked out!  NOw how can you not grunt sometimes while lifting weights- especially if there is a lot of weight to be lifted?

We all thought this was funny.  It was on one of those "stupid laws" segments they sometimes have on radio shows.

Yeah, that is STUPID!
Grunting.. OK, if it's quiet. SCREAMING.. not so much :p
That chain of gyms in near me. They pride themselves on being a "judgement free zone" where people don't have to feel intimidated by the normal gym atmoshphere. Basically, they don't welcome grunting weight lifters, and they make it very clear, there are all kinds of gyms of there for people to grunt all they want, but I think this gym is providing a good enviroment to people that want to get healthy with out feeling intimidated or "not as fit". It has seemed to work very well so far.

That is just my opinion.
I read about this last week, apparently he was making excessive grunting noises while lifting weights and one of the other members complained.

When one of the trainers politely asked him to quiet down he got angry.  When they asked him to leave he resisted and they had to drag him out.

One of the reasons why I don't like gyms is these macho guys who walk around their sh*t don't stink, practically screaming while lifting a 50lb barbell....
I have a brother in law that has to grunt whenever he lifts anything. We all have a good laugh at him . Get him to lift one end of a couch and he is grunting . Oh yes he works out... I can't image being in the same room with him when he is working out. The funny thing is he may be strong at lifting weights but when moving other things he's a joke. He was helping my husband move a freezer and I had to take over for him AND he thinks he's in better shape than everyone else.

I think that alot of unfocused people go to the gym and can't deal with negativity in general and are looking for quick fixes for everything, I think its incredibly rude that these guys who are grunting as i've done have probably worked out for 10 years or so to get to the point to grunt and people who come to the gym once in a blue moon or who lift 10 lbs 100 times have a problem with it.

Remember 90 percent of those grunters were there before working out was cool you know when everybody was hopped up on ephedra pills.Well I guess thats what happens when a bigger group of people hijack a trend for there own perverted democracy of whiners.

Let me ask to the ones who complain the most , how are your results I bet not that great at all now hows your self confidence probably not that high well make spend less time complaining and focusing on your own workout instead of trying to pretend your perfect and everybody and everything else really isn't the problem.

I like the comment these guys there **** dont stank that comment. Do you know how hard these guys try some of them what happened to respecting people who can do something better then you, not trying to pick them apart and find how your right and there wrong good luck on relationships in general if you think like that.Imagine if people debased heros as such wow he grunted like a little bitch when he got shot or more accurately the firemen that recently died doing there job got drug tested and the paper went from hero to zero in a day. This is our society now speak ill of the dead be selfish don't value anyone elses greater accomplishments have refute with everything does any of this sound commonplace at all come on I know it's not just me.

Punctuation was invented for a reason. I think your comments are rude and antagonistic, but I can't be certain because they are also unintelligible.

On topic though, I don't care if guys grunt or not. I agree with HK though, there are some guys who take it a bit far. If they want to do that screaming "HHHNNNGGGGHHHH!!!" stuff, go to a gym where that is appropriate (Gold's etc).

The grunting is the most entertaining thing at the gym.  I can't imagine feeling intimidated by it.

I've only experienced one guy ever being excessively loud, even that was hilarious.  Ahhhhh good times.

If anything I'm burning more calories from laughing.

The main problem is that somehow people started feeling entitled about getting their way because they are "paying" for something.

So now they whine about everything because there is NO FEAR that their dollar will be refused and they will be kicked out.

I personally don't mind the grunting, but there was this one time that I was working out on the elliptical and some man grunted like insanely loud and dropped the weights he was working with on the floor at the same time. It really caught me off hard and it scared the crap out of me. I actually almost fell off the machine because it scared me so bad. Haha.

I kinda like the grunting. Since I keep my headphones pretty high when I here grunting over them I just find it entertaining. After running a few miles you can get pretty bored, but if you have to focus the whole time on keeping your snickering in check the miles seem to go by quicker.

The normal grunts are fine -- and sadly unentertaining. There's some people who just take it too far!

a common occurrence in my gym:
Young man in tight tank top walks in, grabs dumbbell heavy enough that he can barely lift it off the stand. Starts struggling through reps and starts making loud grunting noises after his 3rd lift. by 5th is grunting loud enough to make everyone turn their heads to make sure he hasn't hurt himself. Sees everyone looking, looks proud of himself and heaves dumbbell to the floor. then struts to next machine or whatever and repeats process.
In Japan, business men improved their swing (what ever it's called... I don't know... I don't play golf!) anyway, they improved their game by making noises. There's something about that little extra burst of sound to give you a little more energy.

Embrace your power noise!
i don't mind the grunting, but there is one guy at my gym who sings LOUDLY while on the elliptical.  it's like the try-outs of american idol everytime I go to the gym.  it sure does make it hard to listen to my ipod (usually an audiobook or podcast, not music).
a guy in my gym either has tourettes syndrome or has some real problem. He screams his way through a spinning class and makes loud sex noises, it very very off putting. New people to the class are a bit shocked when he gets going.
They probably haven't seen the "My New Haircut" video on YouTube... Now that guy can teach you something about 'grunting when you get your swell on at the gym'. haha =)
yeah, i grunt when i get  my swell on at the gym, so everybody can see how jacked and tan i am!

UUUUGGGHHH!
Haha i am glad someone else knew what i was talking about! =)

"Girls love my haircut.. and if they don't.. they're F****** s******" haha too funny!
I don;t mind grunting, heck even I do that pathetic kitten whimper when I'm lifting anything above 15 lbs! It's when they look like they're gonna pop an artery in their forehead and they're screaming like a Dragon Ball Z character that I pick up and leave.
I grunt when I get off the couch!!!

I think those guys are pretty weird.  I don't know why they want to be near a hernia (sp?) lifting weights.   I don't care if they grunt loud, that's what ipod is for to tune it all out.  Some guys are pretty loud though.  Sounds like a bad bathroom problem to me.

What would people think of a lady making those strange noises in the gym;-)
a gym that is judgement free that judges people who grunt?  Its like not being racist and hating black people....
Well I guess the whole premise of this gym is that they dont allow grunting or shouting or screaming or whatever.  They advertise this fact.  They dont try to hide it.  They are attracting a certain type of customer that wants that type of environment.  I personally dont care either way, but people that want to grunt or whatever when they are lifting obviously shouldnt join that gym.  And they definitely shouldnt be pissed if they get kicked out for violating a known and advertised rule.  Yes, I on occasion do grunt.  But I am also smart enough to not join a gym that doesnt allow it if I know grunting is something that I "have to do".
I work out at the office, we have a gym here and it is free. There is a group of guys who work out together me being one of them. One in the group is a grunter. The rest of us not so much. We joke around and laugh along with getting a good work out in. Today I was told by one of the guys that we were "Too Loud". We are having to much fun, and yet still getting in a good work out. What is up with that? The grunting was mentioned and I can see that the one guy is pretty loud. But, I got used to it, but us laughing and such what is up with that? We don't just lift weights, it is more like circuit training with weights added in for strength. So we are all over the gym from walking the track, push-ups, sit-ups, squats, name it we do it using all the stations. For me I was surprised. We will see if we still get told we are too noisy in a few days. Really at the time we work out there is probably no more than like 15 people in there at 6:00 AM. People just need to lighten up.
