Everyone says that in order to save yourself from binging, you should chew gum (or that is one of the many suggested things to do).
But does anyone else find that when you chew gum for a long period of time, and it starts to lose its flavor that your HUNGRIER than you were before, or that your stomach starts to growl. Maybe thats just me....
I have a bad binging problem and simply beat myself up over it when i do. The whole time im binging, Im telling myself "youre SO going to regret this later". But i keep going until Im satisfied. Its horrible.
anyway....anyone else relate to me on this gum thing? or am i just weird? haha

The only problem I get from chewing gum is that my mouth starts to get sore. I have jaw issues; it cracks all the time.
I also remember someone telling me that chewing gum screws up your metabolism because you're not actually "eating" anything. I really doubt that's true since:
1. You are consuming the calories by absorbing the flavour.
2. You're chewing which actually burns calories.
Can someone just back me up? xD

I'm actually chewing gum right now. Haha.
I totally understand. What helps me is I always have water with a lemon wedge. It really works!

I have heard chewing gum is BAD for dieters because it gets your stomach going as if you're eating something-which makes you want to eat. I don't know how true that is, but I guess it makes sense.
gum is yummy.
i have heard ppl sayin that chewing gum makes them hungry but for me it is exactly opposite... :P i love gum...
i chew sugar free gum all the time - it does not make me feel hungry - all the chewing makes me feel totally the opposite.
i don't think using a crutch to stop yourself from bingeing is such a good idea. perhaps dealing with bingeing issues head on would be better.
It's all about how you condition yourself... remember Pavlov's dogs?? If you signal your stomach and other digestive processes that chewing means food and work then yes it can make you hungrier... if you often chew on things (for me pens, etc.) then your body doesn't use chewing as its only cue to begin digestion, etc. so you're good. If you're looking to use chewing gum and aren't used to it, then it will take a while to condition your body, but it could help eventually.
i find if I chew gum that has a fruityish flavor then I do feel hungrier..but If I chew some really strong mint gum it makes me not hungry. ?Yes Im strange. :)
I find that chewing gum helps, but everybody's different. I'm just glad that I CAN chew it again; I had dental problems for awhile that prevented it, but the worst of them are fixed now, so sugarless gum is back on my list. I use it mainly to freshen my breath when I'm somewhere that I can't whip out my toothbrush or Listerine, though.
Yeah, chewing gum works for me. But I read somewhere that sugar-free gum has aspartime (artificial sweetener) which is really really bad for your eyes =/
Gum chewing works pretty well to supress hunger for periods of time, but yeah, the aspartame in sugar-free gums can eventually lead to brain tumors, brain lesions, and lyphoma. So watch out for ANYTHING with artificial sweeteners (diet sodas, "sugar-free" anything, etc.----don't be tricked into thinking that these products are healthy).
You're not weird, I've experienced the same thing. Chewing gum signals to my body that I'm eating something, so my digestive juices start flowing and I start feeling hungry. That's why I don't chew gum.
some flavors make me more hungry but usually it helps a lot. i LOVE the crunchy very spicy cinnamon ones. they really kill the urge to go eat.
there are nights (im a night time binger) that i will just take a pack to bed with me. crunch crunch crunch. i figure even at 5 cal per peice... 10 peices is better than the (fill in the blank) i would have eaten. for me the night eating is so much more about MOUTH hunger than STOMACH hunger.
and some poeple it does really make you want more food, and others it can raise the insulin response (so i have read) so... if it works for you, great, if not... celery? ice? watermelon? 100 cal packs of popcorn (those are great too!)

I do find that gum makes a good substitute for eating all the time, but recently i think ive gone a little overboard, my stomach hurts like mad when i ever chew it now. Trouble is i am kind of addiccted to it and cant be without it.
What sucks even more is the fact that they dont make that orbit in slim packs any more where i live, insted theyre in these cardboard wallet thingys. my point is, they were less acidic as extra so now extra is the only darn thing i can sneak to work with me.
JUST 1 THING AFTER ANOTHER:(

i started chewing gum because my binging was out of control. i still binge, but not nearly as much as before. i usually wait about an hour after i eat before i start chewing gum because it makes me hungrier, too. then i chew the gum for about an hour, and once i've taken all the flavor i can... i put in a new piece. thank goodness for costco, because i've gone through so many packs of gum.
I find when I want to snack, and i'm not actually hungry, it fills me up. I guess it just takes my mind off of it. i get my sweet fix and I'm good to go. Chewing gum for me doesn't make hungry. If I chew gum and it doesn't seem to cure my fix, I get a diet soda.
I have a friend who chews gum in between meals when she's hungry, and she has actually lost weight because of it. she says if she didn't chew the gym, she would be munchin on junk.
