"guys dig curves" garbage
Seriously people, whats with all this 'guys dig curves' garbage? Yea right! If guys dig curves, than why is the stick-thin image promoted? And why do guys only date mainly skinny girls whose legs don't even touch when they walk?
Anyone else in high school notice this? Do you think it's just our age?

I agree with the above posters, there is a big difference between "curves" and "fat" (large, big, what have you).
Like it has been said, the stick-thin image is targeted toward women..example..I don't remember the last time I saw a man reading Vogue.
Anyway, High School was really no big deal for me, it was all about knowing the right people, and being friends with the right people. If a guy didn't want to give me the time of day because I wasn't a size 0-2, then no big whoop. They probably weren't worth it anyway. Now that I am in college and married it doesn't matter if guys wanna look or not lol..
(Oh, and I am pretty new, hellooo fellow counters)
I just have to say.....time is your friend. I'm 28 and was BIG in hs (I was lucky enough to always meet boys, but...)......but all the guys were going for the skinny minis and I used to cry about it! But as you get older you'll see that the guys stop going for the 'trophy' girlfriend and start going for personality instead.....and when push comes to shove, you don't want to date the type o guy that really only cares about what ppl think of his g/f's looks!

People keep confusing curves with having extra weight on you. Being curvy means your BONE STRUCTURE is built so there is a noticeable difference in your hip to waist ratio. I hate how people call overweight girls 'curvy' or they 'got booty'. Now everyone thinks being curvy or having a butt is being fat. I mean, would you call Marilyn Monroe fat? Hell no.
but marilynn monroe certainly was not what we call skinny today.... she wore a size 14.... she was curvey.... but by todays standards hell she would be considered overweight.... most stores dont sale over a size 13!!!
Marilyn's 14 would be about a 8-10 in today's sizes -- she was not as big as the size makes her sound. http://www.snopes.com/movies/actors/mmdress.a sp
okay.... you are very correct.... sizes have gotten bigger as people have gotten bigger..... but an 8-10 is still considered plus size..... an 8-10 is not skinny.....
yella, an 8-10 is plus size IN THE FASHION INDUSTRY.
In real life, plus size starts at 14, thanks.
The fashion industry models are 4's and 6's, sometimes even 2's. Those are catalogue models or fitness models.
Runway models are 00, 0, 1 and perhaps a 2 if they're lucky.
Plus size models for the fashion industry run from 8, 10, 12. (For Torrid and other specifically plus size stores, 12-20 is the range).
In real life though, 8-10 is not plus size. That's below average in America actually, where 14 is the average size a woman wears now-a-days.
The fashion industry, much as I love clothes, has sqewed our perceptions. They've been vanity sizing things since the 1960's or so, and slowly but surely sizes are getting larger.
I have clothes from 8th grade that fit me now, and they're labeled 15/16. I wear a 10/12 in most stores these days. That's an increase of at least 4 sizes in 10 years people.
In closing, 8-10 is not skinny, but it is not plus size either. 4-10 is right around what most men prefer on a girl. Fit and strong, slender to just slightly plump. Men like average (not skinny or fat). This is the only time in my life where I've wanted to be average at anything! haha.
I know from my own personal experience that every single guy is different. I have dated lots of guys that were all different in their views. My ex-fiance was 6'6" and only about 175 lbs, had a six-pack and was very attractive. He always dated girls in the heavy side because he said it felt better and softer. My boyfriend now, whom I'm absolutley in love with, is the same height as I am (5'7") and about 132 lbs. I am currently 235 lbs! He's a blackbelt in taekwondo, was very popular in high school (we didn't go to the same school though), and has modeled for Calvin Klein, Abercrombie, and several other catalogs, so you know he's good-looking (lucky me)! I am the first overweight girl he has ever dated, and he said he loves me no matter what, that I don't even need to lose for looks. He supports me because he says he wants me to healthy so I can stick around for a long long time, and not have to worry about heart problems and all that goes with being obese. So really it just depends on the guy.

Has anyone ever told you that you are one lucky, lucky woman?
nasouni.... i am not sure were the disagreement occured..... but i do agree that the fashion industry makes the average women look alot larger than she actually is.... i guess were the difference lies in our perspectives is that i embrace the idea the bigger is better..... now dont get me wrong... "fat is fat!!!" and anorexia is alive and well..... if your stomach is a big as your behind then you need to do something about it..... at the same time if you are a size 4 and cant climb a flight of stairs without getting winded you need to do something about it!!!! someone who is underweight is just as at risk to suffer a heart attack as someone overweight..... because the heart is strained.....
my point is.... whatever you are blessed with.... LOVE IT.... and threads like this need to stop.... because no two women are shaped the same.... to suggest that guys only dig skinny girls as the thread is titled "guys did curves," garbage..... it's insulting and its an argument waiting to be started.....
a women is meant to be curvy.... wider hips and a softer mid section.... it is what makes us capable of child bearing..... it is what seperates us from men...... i just dont see what is wrong with being shaped the way a women is supposed to be!!!

Yella, I was merely correcting you that 8-10 is not plus size.
In the real world, well, in California(USA) where I live, size 8-10 is on the thinner side of average.
The average for those in the USA is a size 14.
That's unhealthy however, as the average woman is only 5'4" and should not be a size 14. Yes, people can vary in size and remain healthy, but the majority of women who are 5'4" and size 14 are not healthy. Not from what I've seen around me, day in day out the last 10 years.
I'm a size 10/12, and I'm 5'6". I am not happy with being this large for my medium frame size.
But a size 8 in not a plus size. It's below average, and healthy.
14 and above is plus size. Sometimes a 12 depending on height.

Of course guys dig curves. Curves as in, 36-26-36 curves. Since when did 'overweight' become known as the more politically-correct 'curves' I do not know, but I don't know any guy who digs overweight girls because of her size. Not to say that guys don't like overweight girls, just that they may like them for their personalities first.
As "witchy" as this sounds, I would have to painfully agree. I was "curvy" at around 150, maybe even 160.... at 200 i'm just fat.

Slightly off-topic, but what i really dislike is how some people call fat people, actually fat, probably quite overweight (it doesn't extend to obese though) curvy. They are not curvy. They are FAT.
Hah. Its just because people are too polite to actually tell them that they ARE fat.
Horrible society, where the truth is always hidden, as children arn't we taught not to lie?
I do wish people could just accept that they are "Fat" not "curvy" Because the acceptance of that could lead to a much healthier lifestyle for them and any of their family members!
Sorry. Its still off topic. But something that irritates me!
I think it depends on the curves you have. My best friend has big boobs, a big ass, and a bump for a stomach, but she weighs more than me, and she has guys flocking over her all the time. I've got average boobs, no ass, and a huge waist, and guys pratically avoid me! And this is the same girl that's telling me I don't need to lose weight. Sorry, girl, but I want to be able to date, too!

Actually apprently she was 118 lbs, making her a size 2.
For example, Marilyn Monroe is said to have worn a size 16 dress. However, this fails to consider the changes in American garment sizing over the last century. Monroe was 5'5" and for most of her adult life weighed 118 lbs and measured 36-24-34[17], which would make her approximately a women's size 2 by modern American sizing standards.

I think Asian guys like really skinny girls (according to my really shallow bro) although they don't really have any clue about how much girls really weigh. Since alot of Asian celebs weigh around 99lbs, he thought that was the averag (which actually alot of normal people do weigh).
I'm not losing weight for some dude, I'm doing this for myself. PFT
I think we have to remember that..
Different things, please different men. Either way, your going to be attractive to someone. Large, thin, tall, short, wonky, straight, zigzag or swirly. Whatever you are, your perfect. Ultimately, besides the physical..If your happy with yourself, then what does it matter.
Guys DO like curves. They don't like fat. There is a difference. People who claim to be "curvy" but are really like overweight or obese are not curvy. They are fat. No offence to anyone but that is the truth.
You should hear the conversations I hear boys talk about. Yeah they don't like overweight girls but they dislike super skinny just as much. They do want girls with curves.. Look at the studies that have been made. When they made silhouette's type things and had guys choose what one they liked (one with out any curves, one with curves and one overweight) most men picked the curvy one.
Guys arn't all the same though.. they like girls in all shapes and sizes.
nah i agree. girls who are skinny get guys and girls whom are fat/curvy dont.
believe me people i know who go through boys like kleenex wouldnt do if the were lager then they are now, i have observed thos 1st hand.
I must say the majority of the posts on here hit it right on the head.
Highschool guys do tend to be immature and those that aren't don't get approached because girls have it drilled into their heads that one body type is meant for all. So it tends to be a lose-lose situation in high school.
As far as body image by the media goes girls take a look at a playboy or a forum and then look at a Cosmo. Those body types are very different so when it comes down to wondering what a guy wants it would be more rational to trust the men's mag instead of the woman's yes?
For the rest of us who don't possess stellar confidence I've found that it can be learned. for me it has been a maturing thing. I am 4'11 a 38C/31/39 lol. I weigh 130-135( my scale is broken) any my very ample bum fits nicley in a size 11. For me this was hard to accept( I used to weigh 110) but I learned, my boyfriend loves my body and tells me constantly that he likes me better now than when we started dating. However I still have those days when I open my favorite magazine and it brings me to tears because I know that I will never ever look like that. It's just not in my genes, what is in my genes are big boobs, butt and hips that are perfect for holding my favorite niece. What I've learned though is that there are days when I pull on my favorite LEI's and that awsome black shirt and I feel like I can catch the eye of every guy on the planet. And ya wanna know something I do! It's all about confidence. If you can look a guy in the eye and feel just feel that gorgeousness exuding from you you'll leave him with a smile he can't get rid of. OK so I think I've blabbered enough lol I'll just go work on that confidence bit now ;)

thats such a good point! i just looked up the average stats for a playboy girl, and its approx 5'6 and 115 lbs. while that is still very small, i think its slightly better than the 5'8 105 pound girls that model the clothes we are supposed to buy! also, stats aside, i've noticed that the playboy girls are on average a little more "pudgy." not fat, not chubby.. but they definitely have a softer look, you know? :)
Shanonna,
Regarding the "fat" versus "curvy" label-- I completely understand why you wouldn't want to embrace a label that is demonized in our society (fat, obese, etc.). Since you describe yourself as both curvy in the hip-ratio sense and curvy in the extra weight sense of the word, I think you can call yourself curvy quite accurately! I don't think you or anyone should have to accept a label you find offensive (think of the evolution of labels for African-Americans!).
Here is another side of this labeling thing that I deal with (and I think maybe some of the other posters who disagree with you might deal with): the label "curvy" has become a euphemism for overweight in our culture to the point that when I, likely in the throes of complaining about finding pants that fit well, mention that I am curvy. As often as not, the person I'm speaking with will respond with, "No you're not; you have a nice figure." So people think I'm saying I need to lose weight or get lipo or something because my waist-to-hip ratio is higher than Kate Moss's, not because the Gap makes clothes for boys and then puts women sizes one them. :)
I struggle with body image like every other non-comatose woman in our society, so then I wonder: Are they saying that because I _do_ need to lose weight? Or almost as bad: do they think I am one of those girls who always thinks I'm fat no matter what I look like? (Disclosure: I am in the normal weight range for someone my size and frame, but I'm about 8-10lbs. heavier than I have been and would like to be.)
And I guess, for me, what is problematic about the loose definition of "curvy" is that, ok, if most people using it really mean "fat," then I've just been labeled fat when the reason I have curves (like you!) is that my bones are structured that way. So having wider hips than a waist just got demonized by default along with fat, and I think the demonization of hip-ratio curves is terribly destructive to women-- since even underweight we'll still have wider hips than waists. For me, blurring the line between overweight and curvaceous is just another way for women not to measure up.
So here's my challenge to everyone involved in this discussion: obviously, people started using "curvy" to mean overweight because they didn't want to offend or further alienate overweight women. What do all of you think is a better term to refer to non-curvy but overweight women? Is there such a thing?

That would be beacuse guys like softness its womanly and sexy and just indescribable. If ya don't belive me try it. In the midst of telling a man how tough and driven independent you are lean in and tell him you you know how to be soft too and watch his eyes shine. It's more than just a body thing its a woman thing and being a woman is damn sexy. I say we should all play up our womanly goddess essence more and stop being so hard.
