Gym first thing in morning? Any luck?

Quote  |  Reply

Over the last 4 weeks I started going to the gym in the morning.  Because I get up at 5.30am and at gym by 6 I eat breakfast on way to work.  If lifting weights I will drink Whey before the gym.  I shoot for 600-700 calories burned (Polar HR).  Some days just cardio other days weights and cardio.

Has anyone had any luck or is it better to burn more at different times of the day.  I noticed this morning while doing cardio I was completely zapped still burnt over 700 calories but my sprints were weak.

I would go to gym at night but have 2 young toddlers and a pregnant wife so life after work can exaust me.

Thanks

I LOVE exercising first thing in the morning! That way, it gives me a boost of energy at school, and I find that whenever I exercise, I make better choices throughout the day. I personally think morning workouts are optimal. =)

I completely agree! I down a large coffee and then hit the elliptical. It wakes me up/gives me energy, plus you can get it done with and out of the way. It can also motivate you to not want to cheat since you've done all that work. And it's not as busy as in the evening! Keep it up:)

I workout in the morning. If I wait until the end of the day, after work I am exhausted. I have much more energy early and get a better workout. I think everyone is different though. Some people are morning people, some are not. Just find out what works for you. The important thing is that you are doing it.

It sounds like you have a winning way to get to the gym - and you're a morning person!  And to put together a plan that can include two kids, a pregnant wife, and work and a gym workout - awesome dude - assuming you're a dude.

I work out in the morning.  It was hard at first, but once you get into a routine, you look forward to it.  Its a lot easier going now that its warmer outside.  I agree with everyone, it does give you a boost of energy and you tend to watch what you eat the rest of the day.  I come up with too many excuses to no go at night.   Once I get home, its tough to get back out and to the gym.

I also love working out in the morning.  The hardest part is getting up, but once I do I never wish I'd stayed in bed.  I get to the gym at 4:30 (something I have in common with Michelle Obama - I'd rather have her arms).

I don't know if there's a difference between working out at different times, because morning is the only thing I've every been able to stick with.  After work I just want to go home and relax.

It feels so much better just to not only have it out of the way incase one of lifes many unexpectants knocks on your door, but it gives me a high all day knowing I started the day doing the right thing.

Does anyone eat anything before the gym, or wait till after?

Working out in the morning is actually the best time! You crank up your metabolism so it will burn for the rest of the day. Also you tend to feel more virtuous and eat better the rest of the day.

You should definitely eat something before you work out.  I have a protein bar before I go to the gym.  I really like the "South Beach" brand.   I used to not eat anything before but last week I almost passed out on my personal trainer, so I learned my lesson.  If you dont  have any cereal bars, have a banana instead, but dont go workout on an empty stomach.

I love working out first thing in the morning too, I have a cup of coffee with just a small splash of milk then I do 30mins on my treadmill before having breakfast...don't do your weights on an empty stomach though!! stick to cardio early in the am...then do your weights later in the day.
