So I just called the gym nearest me, Anytime Fitness, and inquired about the memberships. It would be $39.99 a month for 12 months or $49.98 for 12 months plus tanning. That just seems like a LOT of money!! I was thinking it would be around $20-$30 a month!! Is it just me or is this really expensive??

Cheaper than my gym... :/ for a monthly membership its $70 and if you go by the year I believe it's $600 ($50 per month). Gyms are expensive! ick.
Thats a good deal!
$40 a month isn't too bad actually.  The cheapest ones around here are $20 a month and they're bare bones.  If you find one you like and that you'll actually use, then the price is worth it.  Ask if you can try it out for a week before you commit.
That sounds about right for your area. I used to live in Madison, and I paid around $35-40 for my gym membership. Unfortunately, when there's not a lot of competition around, the price seems to go up. It's not too pricey, though (as gym memberships go), if you're willing to make that commitment for at least 12 months. Before you sign on the dotted line, you may want to check if there's a YMCA that's convenient to you, and what their membership costs run.

I go to the YMCA in my area, and they vary in all areas, buy mine is $60.00/month for a familymembership -  they have both indoor and outdoor pools, with water parks for the kids... they have every cardio machine known to man!  :)  Some I've never even seen before... they also have onsite trainers to answer any questions that you have or to help you with whatever you  need... there are tons of classes.. yoga, spinning, pilates, taebo, pole dancing, kickboxing, just to name a few..

I agree, shop around and get the best price !  Not only that, but they all compete, dont be afraid to let them know that they should pricematch!

Goodluck!

Also, YMCA has discounted memberships for students and people who only work part time..  its almost like they help you pay for it.
Its not too bad...my Metro Y membership is 58 a month.  I just ended getting a part time job there so I get a free membership...sweet
$50 a month is pretty standard, I think.  The YMCA here in Worcester, MA is even $50 a month.  Try checking if there is a Planet Fitness around you.  We just had one open nearby & it's $10 a month.  It's very basic (treadmills, ellipticals, bikes, freeweights, weight machines) but that's all I want, so I'm good.  The problem now is that it's kind of crowded because everyone's joining up.
Lots of gym prices are negotiable...The people who sign your up often do so on commission... ask about their best deals now...

The one that I"m looking at is $30 a month BUT there's an administrative fee... and first and last month's dues... blah, blah, blah

That's not too bad... I pay $25 for one of my gym memberships and then $90 for my family for the tennis/swim club monthly dues(plus we had to buy a $3500 membership) ... what can I say- I like my gyms! =/
Wow, I guess I really did get a sweet deal.  I paid an $80 startup fee, but have paid $21 monthly since then.  A few months ago, I upgraded my membership so that I could go to other clubs in my area (same company) rather than just the one next to where I work.  That brought my total up to $28 a month.

Ask around.  I signed on during a Labor Day special promotion a couple of years ago.
Thanks everyone.. maybe that is kind of a good deal. I looked into the YMCA here and it's even more. So I think I'll probably go with Anytime Fitness after all. There's one more that I'll look into too, but we only have 4 so there aren't many to choose from.

Plus if I think about it... I probably go out for dinner at LEAST twice a month.. so that's $40 right there. So I CAN afford it... it's just that eating out is so much more fun! Hehe.
Shaye1984 - the nice thing I noticed about Anytime Fitness is that, if you belong to one AF gym, you can go to any other AF gym in the country. If you travel, or if you move away from your "home" club, that will come in very handy. I had to upgrade my gym membership to get that benefit (chysbiz - I bet we belong to the same chain of gyms. I, too, paid $7 to upgrade my membership).
Hi Shaye. If it helps any, I just joined Anytime Fitness and it is the best money I have ever spent! I love the fact that I can go work out at any time of the day or night, and a lot of times there is hardly no one else there. I have a very strange work schedule so it is perfect for me. Besides that, if you travel at all, or take vacation, there seem to be a lot of them around so you don't have to miss workouts. Just my two cents, but I highly recommend it.
My fiancee runs a gym called Fitness Premier, its only $20 per month for a single, and $32 for a couple. There isn't a pool or any classes offered, but for what I need, its perfect!!
