Do I have to go to the gym to get toned?
Asked by anonymous on May 25, 2009 in Fitness

Now that school has basically ended, I'm afraid I won't be able to go to the gym every weekday like I used to after school. I am now around my goal weight, but I still want to get more toned.  Do I have to go to the gym for that?

Answer

You need some kind of physical activity that builds muscle to get toned; however, you need not go to the gym.  You can get toned through a physical job like landscaping or by regularly performing a full-body exercise that builds muscle strength, like swimming.  You can also strength-train at home with simple equipment, such as dumbbells of various weights, an exercise ball and an exercise mat, with or without the assistance of strength-training DVDs. It’s important to build a routine so that exercise becomes almost automatic.  Read about some basic strength training principles in order to set up a routine.
