Gynecomastia

Quote  |  Reply

Gynecomastia is the unnatural enlargement of the breasts due to abnormal mammary glands.

Surgery seems to be my only option at this point. It has always been a focal point of my shame and embarassment, and lack of self-confidence.

It seems like my parents' insurance is going to cover it, but I'm scared of surgery. What do you guys think I should do? It means a lot to me, but, I don't want to go through with something that could have adverse side effects or make me look even more disfigured.

You should talk to your doctor or to the surgeon who is planning to do this procedure.  It's 100% normal to be apprehensive about an operation and they should anticipate that you are.  But if you ask them plenty of questions about how often they do the procedure, how long it takes, success rates, after-care, side-effects, scarring, recovery time and so forth a decent doctor should be happy to sit you down and talk you through everything until you're more relaxed about it.  Take your parents along if it helps you remember what to ask.   It sounds like an amazing opportunity to correct the problem.  Replace fear with knowledge and I'm sure you'll be much happier all round.  Good luck
