ok so there i am making my sandwich, and of course got sick of mustard after 3 days........so as i scan there's option 2............MAYO, real mayo at that.....just out of curiosity i turned the jar over.....and it was kind of crazy..........when people talk about eating peanuts.........what do they say about the fat? that saturated is bad and monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fat are good for you..........so of course the back of the jar says..........90 calories per serving 10 grams TOTAL fat......... 1.5g sautrated and 0g trans leaving the remaining 8.5g to mono and poly.......with 90mg sodium and really low chloesterol..........so why is it then that mayo is so bad? cause it seems very close to peanuts and such which EVERYONE SAYS IS GOOD FOR YOU!!!! comments welcome....unleash the mayo lovers and smart people because i have done my homework, lol

Well, you can have mayo as long as you count your calories...

But you might want to keep in mind that those 90 calories of fat are for 1 tablespoon of mayo.

A serving of peanuts, or 1 oz, is about a handful.

So, if you put a tablespoon of mayo next to an ounce of peanuts, you'd have a better sense of the density of calories in mayo compared to the slightly less dense calories in peanuts.

And you'd have an even better sense of calorie density if you put the equivalent caloric amount of broccoli...

:)

If you're trying to save calories, a lot of people feel that mayo is a calorie-dense food they can easily give up.

there's a difference between "good for you" and "not fattening".  Peanut butter and mayonnaise are about the same cals per tbsp, but with peanut butter you get more nutrition for your calories.

Mayonnaise has no dietary fiber and no protein.

I have no idea. Maybe becuase it doesnt have the other thigs like peanuts have a little fiber and a lot of protien along with the cals an fat. Personally I really really dislike mayo cant stand it.

I think the reason that people push mustard and discourage mayo is that mustard - the french's yellow stuff - has 0 cals.  I personally will use 1/2 serving of mayo on a sandwich - I LOVE mayo. :)

Stellajo...  "peanut butter and mayonnaise are about the same cals per tbsp...."

I have to disagree - I've stopped buying PB because it's 190 cals for 2tbsp...

Mayo is about 90 cals for 2tbsp...

when you're only eating 1400 - 1600 cals a day - that extra 100 cals makes a big diff...

(EDIT... Just wanted to note that I"m not trying to start an argument - I just wanted to point out a personal preference.  I'd rather skip PB&J and have a ham & cheese w/mayo)

90 cals for 2 tbsp mayo... you must use light mayo?

Regular mayo is 90 calories for ONE tablespoon.

Peanut butter is 95 calories for ONE tablespoon.

If you're doubling your mayo thinking you're only getting 90 calories total, you may be skewing your daily cals worse than if you'd just stayed with peanut butter.

(But I know what you mean, I love mayo, too.  Fortunately, the light tastes just as good to me!)  Smile

sorry - my bad... :)

Never mind.

just a personal preference I guess. :)

I'll go back to hiding in my little profile and leave you smart ppl alone. :)

I love mayo.  Real mayo, full fat, only full fat and only Hellman's. :)

I just checked the jar in the fridge.  90 calories per tablespoon.

What a bummer.  :(
It's not really a bummer ... 90 calories ... on a sandwich, a tablespoon goes a long way.  I mean, I wouldn't advise making egg salad using 2 cups of the stuff, but nothing should be "off limits", even if it's just once in a while.
I use ranch dressing on sandwiches instead of mayo...I think the calorie/fat content is a bit less and it's easier for me to spread it thinly and I like the bit of zesty flavor.

Mayo is the only acceptable mixer for tuna salad IMHO...miracle whip= bleh!
ok - so tell me this...

isn't mayo just eggs and oil??? so if it's mostly eggs, where did the protien go??? the nutrition label shows 0 grams of protien.

am I losing my mind?
I agree.  Just joking.  I still use mayo and it's the real stuff.  I really, really love Hellman's.  Cream Cheese is another food that I have to keep under control.
I looked up a couple of recipes and they use only the yolk of the egg.  I think the protein is in the whites.
shows what I know. I thought there was protein in both.

Thanks kathypk :)
Mayo - real mayo - in modest amounts can indeed be a part of a healthy diet. In fact, 1 TB of Hellman's supplies 50% of your daily omega 3 ALA's.

Even if you are cutting calories, you should be having two servings a day of healthy mono or polyunsaturated fats. 1 TB of hellman's equals one serving.

More about fats:

mayo is JUST fat and are empty cals

peanuts have protein and vitamins and fill you up

It's about eating healthy!! :)

It's also about enjoying what you are eating.  Personally, I'm a huge fan of the Hellman's light mayo (40 cals per 2 tbsp), but I can't remember the last time I actually used an entire serving -- if I made tuna salad more often, I would.

See, the thing is, I'm not going to make a food part of my daily healthy diet, if I don't actually like it, I don't give a flying leap how freakin' healthy it it (soymilk).

We should be learning how to eat in moderation, to recognize an actual serving, to enjoy the food we are eating, to step out and try a new food (who knows, you might like it (almond milk???), and to learn where to draw the line.  If you can draw the line at a tbsp of real mayo a couple times a week (or even daily) and account for that fat/calories -- FOR GOD'S SAKE -- GO FOR IT.  The more you restrict yourself, the more likely you are to eventually resent it, and more likely you are to slide all the way back.  If you can find a way to have it both ways (a teaspoon of real mayo mixed in the the mustard) -- more power to you.

make your own mayo.

it tastes better. you can make it in a blender.choose whatever oil you want, add spices, add soluble fiber. you could even add protien powder or vitamin powders if you wanted.

its really easy too. and MUCH cheaper than buying it.
the secret is to slowly drizzle in the oil. pause the drizzle if it stops fluffing.

it tastes better so you use less as well.

homemade mayo in potato salad is to die for.

p.s. use the egg white on pet food or for a homemade facial.

anathema -

do you use vinegar or lemon juice or is there even a difference in taste?
