hair issues
I used to have extremely thick hair. Since my eating disorder though, my hair's really suffered. Now it's incredibly thin & if I just run my hand through my hair, a decent amount will come out.
I don't have the ED anymore, but the issues with my hair didn't really show until close to the end of it, & it hasn't really improved yet.
I went to a salon to get a haircut a couple of months ago & the hairstylist literally would not stop talking about how much of my hair was coming out, asking if I was stressed, & it naturally made me insanely uncomfortable & embarassed. I mean, I'm TRYING to get it better, but it doesn't happen overnight. sadly.
My prom's coming up & I really would love to have an updo, but I'm terrified of going to the salon to have it done. My hair's even worse now than it was then, & I'm EXTREMELY self-conscious about it. I don't want anyone having to work with my hair & inevitably commenting on it.
Just thinking about it brings me to tears because I've been doing so well, it's just that my hair hasn't caught up yet. I don't want this to ruin my prom, but I really don't know what to do.
Are there any updos that will work with thin hair [medium length] that I could do myself? I'm honestly too self-conscious to have it professionally done.
Go by claire's and get the hair-a-gami things. I have a similar item with a velvety covering that I got from a street vendor years ago. Two of them creates a pretty nice bun and when you take it down it's all nice and curly as long as it's dry when you put it up.
About 1/2 your hair will go in the inside one (from the top and front of your head, twirl it up and create a round bun), the other half goes in the next one which you use to make a bun around the smaller bun. They give the appearance of more hair because you have the bulk of the device in addition to the hair wrapped around it.
Alternatively you could get a wig or some clip on strands.
However, I think that if you really want your hair professionally styled for prom, do it. When you sit in the chair at the beginning of the appointment, if you want to avoid any nasty comments, tell them plain and simple: "I am having issues with my hair falling out and I am sensitive about it, so please don't comment about it." It is not b*tchy and gets your point across. You are paying them (quite a bit of) money to dress up your hair, not give you crap about it.
I hope you have a wonderful time at prom!
i've really been contemplating to start taking some nail and hair growth supplement, but i hate the thought of doing that because its slightly unnatural, you know?
oh man, i'm really sorry its conficting with prom. that's such a bummer! good luck! :)
I have a hairagami, & I'll be going to the drugstore to see what else there is.
& picklepug, I remember reading somewhere that your hair reflects three months back. So basically, if you were malnourished three months ago, your hair will show that now. Same goes for nails. I must admit, that seems pretty accurate.
I took supplements for a while [a hair/nail/skin one], but I didn't really notice much of a difference. I dunno.
I had extremely thick hair too. And then i got an ED. during my ed my hair was dry and stuff but it never fell out.
I started recovering with a nutritionist and when i was 3/4 of the way recovered my hair started falling out like you wouldnt beleive. This was in about the middle of October.
Littereally every time i would touch my hair i would lose handfulls, like handfulls of atleast 10 everytime. I was losing hundreds, and hundreds of hair every day.
So i was eating more, plenty actually, even my nutrionist said so and my hair was getting worse, and worse and worse. Showering was the worst thing of my life, and it would literally just pour out of my head.
SO i went to doctors, a couple of them, and got tested for vitamins. i wasnt defiencent in any. my thyroid was also good.
So january came along (3 months into my hairloss) and i thought forsure it would start getting better. I went to my hairstylist becuase i FINANLLY got brave enough to go to one, and she could not beleive how much hair i had lost and was losing. It was horrible.
I started searching for the healthiest food for hair and i would only eat that. Salmon, nuts, etc. It was the most frusterating thing of my life. I was eating everything for my hair, and i was gaining weight, and i was going bald. I bought the expensive Nioxin shampoo too, nothing helped. I went from straightening my hair EVERYDAY to never even brushing it.
March came along and i WAS STILL LOSING MY HAIR. it is extremely thing now. I wash it everyother day and i dont brush it when i get out of the shower becuase it falls out way too much.
About the middle of April it slowed down drastically. So it took about SEVEN MONTHS after being healthy for my hair to stop falling out. And even today it still comes out more than it should, but its better.
Im sorry this is so long, but i know exactly what you are going through. I have spent many, many, many nights crying myself to sleep, I have turned down many social functions becuase im to embarassed. It sucks, big time. Ive spent way too many hours crying and hating myself for what i did to myself.
So if you made it through this post, and have any questions feel free to message me. I had the most extreme hair loss ever, and it was EXTREMLY tough to deal with, being a senior in high school:(
Hi,
I am sorry that you are so nervous about this, you should def be happy, it's your prom! Congrats on your recovery.
I just did a google search of Cameron Diaz, she has medium length thin hair so maybe you could find some pictures of her hairstyles, I saw some really cute ones! I would link but I don't know what kind of styles you like, so maybe flip though a few!
Also, I don't want to sound insensitive, I completely understand why you are self conscious about going to get it done. That way they can suggest good styles for thinner hair. Otherwise, maybe a close friend can help you.
Maybe if you find a cute style you could practice it a few times, that way when prom comes you are not feeling nervous and anxious about it because you have a got a cute style down!
I hope you have a great time at your prom!
Hey- really easy but pretty hairstyle is just a low pony off to the side. Then, take a curling iron and make a few thicker wavy-curls. My best friend got this done for prom last year but it doesnt look hard to do and she looked great. maybe try that and see if you like the way it looks with your dress. Have fun :)
Hello,
I don't have any short term answers as some of the others here have. However, I do know that for good hair growth a mixed seed mix on your breakfast cereal that will strengthen and help your hair growth.
Jane
Thanksssss!
lisee- thanks a lot for the suggestion. Yeah, I'm going to be experimenting a lot to see what I can do & what works best. I've always been terrible at curling my hair, but now's as good a time as any to learn, right? haha
Have you tried Jessica Simpson's hair extensions? A little more expsensive than claire's but totally worth it.
I lost a lot of hair from being in the hospital. It sucks. But it does take time. Just be patient. Start using Nioxin- all three steps. The shampoo, conditioner, and foam. It will stimulate your scalp and help your hair grow back faster. Trust me. Both me and my dad have used it and it helps a lot.
Once your hair stops falling out I started brushing my hair 100 times a day. Sounds dumb but it also stimulates your scalp, and also helps distribute oils so your hair is more healthy.
Good luck!
p.s. a really good vitamin will help too
