Hair loss

Quote  |  Reply

Hello, I am a 14 year-old in recovery from anorexia. My progress has been moderate, gaining 2-3 kg in the last two months or so, and that was almost fine with me, apart from the whole relapse-stress thing, not knowing wich side of your thoughs you could trust, so on...

But the thing is, I just got home from vacation in Italy (where I  sort of lost focus of my eating habits) and for the last few days and since I got home, I've constantly been losing hair. I almost panicked when my brother had to clean out the shower because there was hair blocking the drain. The hair loss has only been significant since I started my recovery. Thankfully I used to have really thick hair, or it would look like hell right now...

The point is, how do I know what is causing my problems, or what the most usual cause is? Could it be lack of protein, fats, etc. or just general malnutrition? Do you think it could be due to the stress.... At 14?

I'm sort of scared, because I don't want to be nearly bald by 20....

ICongrats on choosing recovery!!

I too have suffered such bad hair loss. Im affraid to say that this is one of the consequences of starving ourselves.  When the body isnt getting fed, it will concentrate on putting the nutrients it does get to more important/essential things like keeping your heart beating, sine hair isnt important when your killing yourself.  Eat enough fats, oils, seeds, nuts,  brazils are meant to be good for the hair, also eat oily fish like salmon, sardines.  Iv been in recovery for 5 months now and it still hasn't stopped fallin out so don't expect results overnight.  Hope this helps love :)

Thanks for the advice. Sorry to hear that it will continue.... But, well, nothing you can do 'bout it. I'll keep trying.... So I hope you will too :3

Im having a similar problem now and its really scaring me. But its one of the things that is keeping me eating. I dont want to lose my hair.

yeah, I try not to think too much about it and just try to mintain a healthy weight. Sunflower seeds helps with that, too...

i have been trying to get more healthy fats. like flax seeds and almonds and things like that but its so hard for me. last night i needed to get in somemore calories and i couldnt even eat a couple spoons of peanut butter, i tried so hard though and i did end up having a little. i wish i could just get better already im so tired of not being healthy.

Just eating peanut butter is hard for me though. It always feels like it gets stuck in my throat, so instead I snack on some walnuts or similar, since they contain little saturated fat and such.... Otherwise you could try adding some flaxseed into your meals, since they're hardly noticeable (I try hard not to scrutinize my food).
