I haven't posted here for a long time, but I'm hoping someone might be able to help! For the past year or so my hair has been falling out steadily. At first, I wasn't overly stressed about it because I had really thick curly hair, so you couldn't really tell. But now, you can see my scalp pretty clearly, my hair just looks limp and awful, and if it continues at this pace, I'll be completely bald! I think it was originally caused by birth control (leostrin), but it's been almost a year since I stopped taking it and my hair is still falling out. I've had blood tests which were all normal, except I have slight anemia so I've been taking an iron supplement. And I've been to several doctors -- one of them gave me a prescription fro Yaz and Spironolactone which I've been taking for maybe 8 months (though i don't think either are helping at all).
Has anyone had a similar experience? Were you able to regrow your hair? What helped you grow your hair? I try not to focus on it and I know it takes time to regrow, but I'm so worried that I never will!!
Are you eating enough protein & enough calories? Per my nutritionist, without sufficient protein and sufficient protein, hair will not grow properly. If you're sure you're getting enough protein, enough calories, and you're at a healthy weight (and you've been at a healthy weight & properly nourished for 6 months or so), you really need to keep talking to your doctors.
But - that said - I know lots of people who have lost a lot of hair and had bald patches due to malnourishment from eating disorders, and it's always grown back once they were well-nourished again.
I've also heard that biotin is helpful.
Have your doctor (preferably an endochonologist (sp?)) test you for Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS). Especially if you've had a sudden weight gain of 30 lbs or so and have irregular or completely missing menstruel cycles. PCOS is basically an issue with your hormones and other stuff. But basically, you can have more testoterone in your system than estrogen which can then cause male pattern hair loss and hair growth. There are about 8 different symptoms but not everyone gets all of them. For more info, check out: http://women.webmd.com/tc/polycystic-ovary-sy ndrome-pcos-topic-overview
