Sweetheart,

I really feel for your situation.  I'm sorry that you are having this problem.  Unfortunately I don't have any first hand experience for you to learn from.  If you aren't already, please start taking a multi-vitamin, evaluate what nutrients you are getting from your food, and please see a doctor.  I am praying that your situation begins to improve.

Melanie

thank you so much mladdy. i am taking about 5 different types of vitamins, using nixon shampoo for my hair, visited my hairstylist, and gone to the doctor. and seen a nutritionist. and NOONE can tell me whats wrong. thanks for praying. i have been too, i think thats the only thing out there that can help me right now.
My hair is falling out like crazy too! I NEED HELP!
i assume you are both very low bmi so gaining weight will help.  also, hair loss can be a result of other conditions such as pcos so it might be worth getting your dr to get blood tests to check hormone levels.  If something is up, go see a specialist endocrinologist
i just went to my nutritionist a couple days ago and my bmi is at the lowest end of "healthy weight" you can get.

so i know i still need to gain more, but is that a reason why it could still be falling out?

ive had blood tests done a couple months ago when it first started falling out and they didnt show anything wrong

i just went to the doctor at the begining of the week to get my blood tested again and so the results will bein by the end of the week.

ive also seen my hairstylist, and im taking a lot of vitamins that my uncle (chiropractor/dr) put me on.

nothing is helping.

COULD it be becuase im not at a healthier weight? even though one of the tests showed that i am not malnurished and i am at the VERY low end of healthy weight?

I have no first hand experience and I am far from being a doctor so my reply is worth whatcha paid for it LOL. However, I had a friend who was suffering from hair loss while she was on a very unhealthy diet. Her doctor told her to start taking pre-natal vitamins and also to eat better. It was months after she started eating better and taking prenates before her hair quit falling out.

From this, it may be pertient for you to ask your doctor for the good prenatal vitamins I think they are called prenate90 and pay the big bucks for them --trust me they are much better than the ones you get over the counter for $5.99. If you cannot afford the prenate 90s or your doctor won't prescribe them for you, then you should definitely purchase the centrium LIQUID vitamins. Liquid vitamins will be much better absorbed by the body than ANYTHING in pill form. Along with that, I have heard that taking vitamins right before bed is best as it will give your body the nutrients you need while your body is in repair state (ie sleep). Along with this, the only other piece of advise that I have for you it is to make sure you get plenty of healthy protein.

If there are no other medical reasons for hair loss other than unhealthy dieting, you are lucky because your hair will grow back when you give the body the stuff it needs but you may be stuck where you are for 6-12 months because your body will direct nutrients to vital organs and functions first before it concerns itself with things like hair.

thank you so much for all the information.

i thought about taking prenatal but i totally forgot to ask my doctor when i was just in. right now i am taking fish oils, adrenal viatmin, estrogen vitamin, some other kind, and then these multi vitamin packs where i take one in the morning and one at night. The bill was $150 and that was at cost, becuase my uncle owns the place.
So i would think some of those pills would have to be doing something

My hairs been falling out since like a month before thanksgiving, and as im eating more its falling out more. So its been about 3-4 months of this:( and its getting worse and worse.

i hope its not another 6 months because i dont think i can emotionally handle it for any longer

do you get your period?

Thats a sign of being healthy enough for hair growth .etc

Your hair reflects health/nutrition of THREE MONTHS AGO. Were you eating well then?

all I can offer. Good luck.

I had the same problem, not as bad, but it is HORRIBLE so i feel for you.

BMI can never be exact...in fact it can be way off, so....hmm....

I start losing my hair when I started diet and exercise. the first time I didn't know anything about eating 1200 cal or more if you exercise. I deprive myself so when I lost weight fast my hair was falling off like crazy. I was so scare. Plus the change of weather and stress. Now im so happy my hair is not falling anymore but still lost a lot of hair. =( I used to have beautiful full hair in my head... it sucksss......
I started limiting my calories to around 1200 this past January (2007).  Around April, I noticed that more hair was coming out in the shower and when I brushed than normal, i even noticed one small bald spot the size of a pea (but it's possible that that's always been there and I just didn't notice it).  I got really worried and paranoid, so I upped my calories into a more healthy range (and didn't gain any weight, just maintained my new, lower than previous, weight).  Up until a few months ago, it still felt like I was losing a lot of hair, even though it didn't necessarily look thinner.  But I continued with the healthy amount of calories anyway, and it's been paying off because I've noticed that my hair feels healthier and stronger, and there is a lot less fallout.  Keep in mind that hair also goes in cycles, this could be a temporary shedding cycle.  Don't stress, stress will make your situation worse.  Instead, focus on getting a well balanced diet full of healthy fats (nuts, olive oil, cheeses, etc.), dairy, whole grains, protein, fruits and veges.  Keep taking good care of your hair/scalp, and don't blowdry or use any straightening/curling irons on your hair.  Best of luck!  I am confident that you will be fine if you consistently eat enough of the right foods.
Thank you so much for all the replies and advice. No I don't have my period right now, I haven't had it since ladt march. Right now I am 5'1.5" and 101.5 pounds. I eat a lot of protein drink 3 cups of milk a day and est almonds n pesanut butter everyday. I'm also using nioxin shampoo now. I just wish it would stopm I know stressing about it is really bad but last night I woke up in the middle of thr night n just cried n thought about my hair. It is so emotionally draining. I'm ready to move on with my life but it seems like I'm reminded of my past ed everyday abd it sucks.

When ur hair stopped falling out did it just stop one day or did it slowly stoP?
Oh and yeah I was eating pertty good 3 months ago. I was already in recovery n gaining weight, but my hair was falling out then too, just not as bad as it is now

your body is going through a lot of adjustments and sometimes these take time. It might still be recovering and adjusting. You need to keep on going- eating healthy.  I won't repeat everything that the others have told you on what foods to eat more of. Just listen to themSmile
My hair kept falling out for months after I started eating properly... not quite as much... but it was still kinda scary.

This said...

There are quite a few medical conditions which can cause hair loss in women- I know you have been checked by your doctor... but I do urge you to ask for further testing. Escpecially since you are taking care of yourself and this is obviously putting a large amount of strain on you. If indeed there is some medical condition... thyroid, anemia, alopecia areata, polycystic ovary syndrome... then your physician really needs to treat it so that your hair can improve.
But I think you are probably adjusting and going through a shedding cycle...

Be strong. It'll be alright. Eat well. Take care of yourself. Sleep (that's really important too)

let me know how it goes

its because your bodys still trying to repair all the other areas damaged from anorexia, all the nutrients will probably have been sucked up repairing muscle wastage and internal damage and the last place its gonna think to repair is your hair.

im having the same problem and ive resulted in wearing a hat every single day...

Hmmm...you've been to your family doctor, what about a dermatologist or other kind of specialist? A friend of mine was losing his hair through what he thought was simply male pattern baldness, but what turned out to be an allergy to the natural mites from his girlfriend's body. We all have microscopic parasites on our bodies that actually keep us healthy (so don't get too icked out, lol). Unfortunately, it's possible to be allergic to the ones on another person. It's quite rare, but it is possible.

I would say that if you don't see an improvment in hair loss in a couple months, make an appointment to check it out. There are no shortcuts to health, I'm afraid.

Liosa,

Keep praying for your body to repair.  But in the meantime, buy a pretty scarf or hair accessory that will make you feel beautiful.  Everything will go back to normal if you are taking care of yourself now :)

Melanie

hey I'm going through this too ( haha you answered on one of my threads) anyways, I did find something about when your body isn't getting the nutrients that it needs and the follicles become weak, they go into " sleep mode" and when you're body starts to get the nutrients it needs they " wake bake up"  (for lack of better wording) which causes them to fall out. So in a way, the hair falling out is a sign of new hair coming in but it takes about 6 months to see a difference since hair grows so slowly. The nioxin shampoo should help since it increases blood circulation to the head ( atleast I hope cause I just bought some too). Just keep eating healthy and I do think that it would help to up your calories until you get your period because only once your body is functioning properly will it start to take care of your hair. I know how hard this is, I find myself just breaking down and crying out of frustration but don't give up=] it should get better as long as you take care of yourself.
