Quote  |  Reply

I have been gaining for 2 months now and just got my period back. But my hair is still coming off big time. My hair has always been my pride and the only thing I REALLY liked in my body, now it falling off and Im freaking out. Will it eventually stop? (Im eating 3500 calories a day and lots of good fats) Or...can I go bald like this?

I'm in my 4th month of gaining and my hair is still falling out. =\ On the up-side, I am starting to get some new hair growing in now... at the same time old hair is falling out, whatever. My hair is drastically thinner than it was before my ED but I'm not bald, and I doubt you'll be, either. I do have a patch on either side of my head where my scalp shows through when I put my hair in a ponytail unless I arrange my hair just so... but yeah, give it time. I thought my hair would never grow back in; it only started doing so about a week ago.

Hair is created under the scalp well in advance of it appearing in your head.  So the condition of your hair (and nails) reflects the health of your body two or three months earlier.  It'll probably start to improve a few months after you get out of the underweight bracket.

If you start losing hair in patches rather than more generally then that could be worth talking to your doctor about.

.

My doctor told me that it can take 6-8 months after refeeding begins for hair to stop falling out. Sure enough, by my 6th-7th month of gaining I noticed less hair was falling out. It was still more than normal, but it was definitely an improvement. Also I could see lots of new hairs growing in.

Healthy fats will help, so it's great you're eating more of them! Make sure you're getting enough protein too. I'm sure your hair will stop falling out; just give it time.
