hair stylist help

Does anyone have any good hints for finding a new stylist?

I tried someone new yesterday and she didn't go anything I asked and I hate my hair so much I can't stand it.  The last girl I liked quit to stay home with her baby.

I am giving up on finding one locally as they must all go to the same beauty school and this was my 3rd attempt at local shops.

I wish there were blogs about hairdressers.  I'm going to a different city, farther away, but don't want to randomly choose a salon.

any ideas? Thanks.

Where in Ohio are you? If you're near Cincinnati, I know a great salon.

If not... just ask people you know where they go and if they're satisfied.

Ohio - When I first moved, I panicked with the thought of having to find a hairdresser.   I started asking people with great hair where they get it done.  Surprisingly more than half went to the same salon.  Tada - I've been going there now for almost 8 years!

check out citysearch.com in your area

If you want to drive to Virginia, my wife can DO YOU UP RIGHT FOR REAL.

tando:  trouble is, in this area (I really hate saying this) it's sort of a depressed area and I really never see anyones hair that I like.  I know many wonderful ppl, who just have other priorities in their life and I think that's great, but doesn't help my problem.  When I was in one little town that is known as a higher income area, I did see some ppl shopping who had great hair, but couldn't rush up to a stranger and ask, altho I'm at that point.

alibuch:  I'm going to try the Akron area, altho thats not where I'm at.  Know anyone there?

I did find a shop with 5 pages of good reviews and considering trying it and it's in a good location.
deathrocket:  I do love the state of VA, but it's a bit far....... :)

alexandrapaige:  ok, I'll try that.
Ohio - hairstylist here...

Not sure what to tell you about finding a good hairstylist...But I do live in PA - and I have clients from all over, as far as Arizona.

But I totally agree with the person who said about asking and seeing who others go to, even if it's a complete stranger, giving them a compliment to begin with on their hair is a great ice breaker.

As far as feeling out the salon, I've heard several tips, never go into a salon for the first time that the stylists are all sitting there waiting for a customer, a busy waiting area shows that the salon has a client base, which means people keep coming back ( a good sign)... Look at the hairstylists' hair, while this isn't the best judge, if they take their time to look professional, then they are more likely to do the same to yours.

Hope some of those tricks help...  Sorry you hate your hair currently...

Can't say I do. But I will say never go to a Supercuts or Great Clips type place.
Go to a place that is nice... you'll get a much better quality haircut. At the place in Cincinnati I go to, I pay about $45. I've recommended my stylist to someone else off this site and she loves her. The place I go to here in Seoul, I pay $30 and tip him a lot because it takes a lot for me to like a stylist.

Word of mouth is the best... a good stylist's clients will tell people about how great they are. Between my sister and I, I'd say we've gotten a solid 15-20 regular clients for our hair stylist in Cincy.
jess;  well that makes sense, and out of 4 stylist I was the only customer for awhile.  Never thought about that before.  My hair is super thick so a challenge.

thanks and if gas weren't so expensive I'd drive to PA :)
alibuch:  yes, I've heard the same about Supercut places.  You're lucky you have someone you like.  The price, no matter what, is worth it when it's a good cut.

In Florida, with that cut, I could just get up in the morning and run my fingers thru my hair and shake my head and it fell into place.

My hair has always affected how I feel, even when I was very young.
What if you just called the best salon in your area and asked for the best stylist there?
alibuch,  I normally go to probably the best place and have tried 2 ppl, one for almost a yr, and then found out what day she is off and said, that was the only day I could go, so got someone else who did a worst job.  They have no competition and do the same haircut over and over.

I'm calling the one place that had good reviews and will post results here next week, or when every I can get in.
I used to live on the east side of cleveland in Willoughby, that's probably about an hour away from you, but I loved my stylist! He was awesome, I wish I could have taken him with me :)

It's probably further than you want to travel, but here's the info:

Michael Stefan Salon (440)946-6644 4082 Erie St Willoughby, OH 44094

Ask for Michael, he's the owner and absolutely awesome!
rdgatewood:  I go to Beachwood all the time, so I'm guessing Willoughby isn't much farther.  I get my car serviced there and also stop at a market in Solon.

 thank you so much!!!
You're welcome :)

He's located in the historical area of downtown Willoughby...it's a cute neighborhood. Actually, I use to live in the apartments above his salon, so it was an easy commute for me to get my hair done ;p

Is there any chance that the one you liked so much might be willing to do an occasional cut for you out of her home for cash?

I've actually had strangers ask me where I get my haircut.  I didn't think it was that odd, so don't be afraid to ask that person in the line behind you at the grocery store or whatever.  Like someone said, it's a very nice compliment, so whoever you ask is unlikely to be bothered by your question.

Good luck!

smwhipple;  I hadn't even thought of that and like the idea, except when I asked how she was doing last time, learned she is expecting again and her hubby is doing well in his job.

beckyeas:  oh believe me, after this, I will tackle any woman with a decent haircut,  who walks by me.
