any hairdressers on here?
Im 17 years old(female) and i am losing my hair like crazy. I started having an eating disorder at the very begining of the summer, and i started recovery late September.
My hair wasnt falling out at all during that time period.
As soon as i started recovery i started gaining weight.
About the end of october or begining of november, i cant remember exactly, my hair started coming out, alot. It started getting better for about 2 weeks then around Christmas it started coming out alllllooottt again, and it has been ever since.
im not talking about a couple strands here and there, im talking huuuge amounts, EVERY single time i run my hand through hair.
I see a nutritionist, ive gotten bloodwork done to test thyroid and hormones and everything turned out good, i take alot of vitamins, ive seen my hairdresser (who has agreed that i havelost A TON of hair) so she has me using Nioxin Phase 3
Nothing is helping, it is not stoping and i am honestly scared to death. i have already lost so much, and everytime i shower i end up crying becuase it doesnt stop coming out, and throughout the day its constantly coming out too.
I wash/shampoo it everyother day, not everyday becuase showering has turned into a tragic event.
ANY ADVICE?! i will try anything right now, please help me
will it, or whats going on?
Sorry, I can't be of more help :(
lilsammi23-i just went to the doctor a week ago, thats when i got the tests done. and ihave told my nutritionist and she has no idea. they both just say "it should stop."
schnooder- the only stress is coming from my hair lol. does your hair come out every time u run your hands thru it and when u shower does it come out handful after handful after handful... literally.
it wouldnt scare me so much if i wouldnt have already lost at least half of my hair.
maybe that will answer some questions for you. i hope it helps.
minie13- thanks, i am really scared:(my hairdresser gave a viatmin to try for hair and nails, along with all the other vitamins i am taking, and it doesnt seem to be helping too much:( and no i dont have pics since its started falling out but i TOTALLY understand about disorted views. but my hairdresser told me that ihave lost a ton of hair too:(
i hope itll just stop alraedy:(
when i was about 17/18 i realized my hair seemed to be coming out in greater amuounts then before...i went through all the test too and they came back good as well...i went to dermatologist too and he couldn't help any...Do you have actual bald spots? Its one of the things that when i told the doctors no,they pretty much had shrugged me off. To me my hair feel thinner then what it used to be but I also still don't have bald spot and it really isn't any worse...Maybe it is just a part of the growing up part...I didn't have an eating disorder though but I have had kinda of the same thing. My advice would be is though it is hard (very hard) try to find something else to distract you...and just make sure you eating green veggies and the vitamens.
Also if you don't have short hair already lessening the length will make it seem fuller and even maybe curls(not much help but it was somethings i used/did when I had seen that happening to my hair)
Good luck and I hope it is figured out soon.

yes it does come out probably just as much as yours does. it came out in bunches for a few years, it still comes out but not as rapidly as it used to
Any sort of trauma you put your body through will show in your hair 3-6 months later... Remembering that, it depends on how long of an eating disorder you had to determine how much longer your hair will fall out for.... Although, your hair may not grow in as thick, your hair will grow back as long as you maintain eating healthy...
No worries though this is a very common side affect of an ED.... Good luck to you!
I cant ever remember running my hands through my hair or combing it and BUNCHES coming out shnooder. Maybe its just me but this seems only associated with an ED or some other medical problem. Not for the normal healthy person, yes I get a few strands here and there falling out but not clumps and bunches.
I second the advice to speak with your nutrition or doctor about this they might be able to give you some excellent advice to help with your recovery.
good luck
And my hair started falling out in about october so it has been for about 3 - 3 1/2 months. do u know how long it usually falls out for?
And i have talked to my nutritionist about it, i see her every week and always tell her, but she has no idea.
And i went into the doctor a little over a week ago and got tests done and they tested my thyroid and hormones and a couple other things and everything was normal.
Thanks for all the suggestions everyone! ireally do appreciate it!
I totally recommend eating healthy and taking a multi-vitamin, with folic acid... Now this may take about 3 months to start showing in your hair, but that should help.... And again your hair may not be as thick, but it will start growing back...
Way to go getting back on track after an ED... That's something to be proud of!

ok? like im lying about it or something. i was told it was not a big deal and that it would stop eventually. it did. it took a while but it stopped. I was healthy and happy.
Hi Liosa, Debbie here, I've been a hair dresser for about 10 years now, I also have friends and family the suffer from hair loss. First you have to remember that your body does not always react to bad habit's right away, (take smoking, you don't get cancer 2 day's after your first cig). The same goes for your hair. There are many reasons hair will fall out. ED can be a main cause, you put your body through a lot, and it takes time for your body to heal. Hair is kinda the last priority as far as nutrients go, you body will distribute and heal major organs first, it will steal what it needs from other sources (like your hair and nails). I have a friend at work that had gastric bypass, she has lost 100lbs in the last 8 months, her hair started to fall out in droves about 4 months into her weight loss. Her doctor had previously warned her about this side effect, He also assured her it would stop, it takes about a year for everything to normalize. Also if you are doing any chemical treatment to your hair try to keep it to a minimum, since your hair is in a fragile state breakage can also be a problem. Be patient, eat right, take your vitamins and try not to stress out about it, (stress is another major cause of hair loss as well as certain medications). I know it's hard not to stress about the one thing that's making you stress, but try to focus on being healthy first, everything will follow. By the way a shorter hair cut (shoulder length can help as well as voluming products, I recommend Matrix Amplify.
Debbie
Not to mention that on color treated hair (only based on your profile picture) would not be the best - because I've noticed that this product tends to dry the hair and cause furture damage to hair that has been bleached (if they used this type of product for the highlights)....
However, I totally agree with Debbie when she says about the shorter haircut, because not only will that make it look fuller, it will also help once your hair starts to grow back, you won't have the strayed ends as badly.
I am not trying to affend anyone in any way what-so-ever, normally I don't even post when I disagree with someone, but this is a subject that I do feel strongly on, and coming from the back ground that I have - (intense product knowledge, former National Educator with a very highly known professional product line-not to mention platform work)...
Trust me guys I am not saying that I know all about hair, but this product should solely be used on someone with natural fine hair...
I do NOT believe this will help in your situation..
